This upper feed roller may have either a smooth or a roughened surface, depending upon the character of the material to be operated on.
Directly beneath the drum 3 there is provided a drum 4 which may also have pins or other working tool parts thereon, for engaging with the fiber. The two drums 3 and 4:
are so positioned in respect to each other that the pins of one pass closely adjacent to the pins of the other. Thus one drum serves to take off the material from the other, as the two drums rotate in the same direction. At the lower side of the drum 8 below the member 9, there is provided a grating 5 leading to the takeoff point 10, where the paths of movement of the pins on the two drums intersect. A similar grating 6 substantially encircles the lower drum to the opposite take-off point 11, and a grating 7 extends up along the side of the drum 3. Above the upper drum 3 is the conduit 8 where the wall leaves the path of the pins and the fibers may be thrown OE and leave this part of the machine.
As the heavy stalk parts are thrown down from the edge of the guide member 9, the eliminated particles may drop through the grating 5, and as the fibers are transferred from the pins of the drums 3 to those of the pin 4, other particles of the liberated impurities may be separated from the fibers and pass through the grating 6. As the fibers are transferred back to the drum 3 at the take-off point 11, further stalk particles and impurities may be separated and pass out through the grating 7 It will thus be noted that the drum 3 serves not only for the breaking up of the stalks to defiberize them, but also acts as a part of the cleaning mechanism at the portion beyond the take-off point 11. The fibers are shifted twice, but only two drums are employed. The gratings may be removable for cleaning purposes, and a section of the grating 11 may be hinged so that it may be opened to permit access to the lower drum without removing all of the grating.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An apparatus for disintegrating and cleaning fibrous material, including a drum, a pair of feed rollers and a guide member between one of said feed rollers and said drum, and having a surface substantially concentric with the other feed roller and a surface diverging from the surface of the drum.
2. The combination with a rotatable drum of a pair of feed rollers and a guide memher, said guide member having a working edge closely adjacent to the periphery of said drum and to the periphery of one of said feed rollers, one surface of said guide member extending downwardly substantially parallel to the surface of the last mentioned feed roller, and another surface extending downwardly from said working edge and diverging from the surface of said drum.
In combination a rotatable drum, a pair of feed rollers, one of said feed rollers being disposed closely adjacent to the periphery of said drum, and the other being disposed at a greater distance from said drum, and a guide member disposed between said last mentioned feed roller and said drum, and having a working edge adjacent to the line of tangency of the first mentioned feed roller and said drum.

5. An apparatus for defiberizing plant stalks and subsequently cleaning the reclaimed fibers, including, a drum having pins on the periphery thereof, a pair of feed rollers, a guide member cooperating with one feed roller to deliver the material to the surface of said drum, and a second drum also having pins on the periphery for taking off the fibers from the pins of the first mentioned drum.
6. An apparatus for defiberizing plant stalks and subsequently cleaning the reclaimed fibers, including a drum having pins on the periphery thereof, a pair of feed rollers, a guide member cooperating with one feed roller to deliver the material to the surface of said drum and firmly hold the portion of the material which is between the guide and the last mentioned feed roller for action thereon by said drum, and a second drum also having pins on the periphery for taking ofi the fibers from the pins of the first mentioned drum, and a grating substantially encircling said second mentioned drum whereby the fibers are returned to the first mentioned drum and transferred to the latter.
7. An apparatus for defiberizing plant stalks and cleaning the fibers, including a pair of drums rotatable in the same direction and having fiber engaging pins upon the peripheries thereof the drums being so positioned in respect to each other that the pins of one drum remove the fiber front the pins of the other, means for delivering fibrous material to one of said drums, and a casing substantially encircling the other of said drums, whereby the fibers are transferred from the first mentioned drum to the second mentioned drum, and thereafter re-transferred from: the second mentioned drum to the first mentioned drum. 7
8. An apparatus for defiberizing plant stalks, including a drum having Working tools upon the surface thereof for breaking and defiberizing the stalks, and a second drum having fiber carrying parts upon the periphery thereof, said drums being juxtaposed whereby two take-off points are formed, one for the transfer of fiber from the first mentioned drum to the second mentioned drum, and the other for transfer of fibers from the second mentioned drum to the first mentioned drum at the side opposite to the point oi delivery of the fibrous material to said first mentioned drum.
9. A process for defiberizing plant stalks and subsequently cleaning the reclaimed fibers, which consistsin defiberizing the ma terial by the action of a drum, taking oil the fibers from said drum, cleaning them,
and returning them to the drum; at the side opposite to that at which the defiberizing action is efiected.
10. A process of defiberizing plant stalks and subsequently cleaning the reclaimed fibers, which includes the step of delivering the material to be defiberized to drum York and State of New York this 20th day of April, A. D. 1926.
