erator to type letters having their lower, or 1 last typed line uniform.-
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character wherein the signaling device may be adjusted in order .that the position of the last line of typing may be regulated; and further to provide means whereby the device can be attached to typewriter carriages of various sizes.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a typewriter showing the device in place thereon. yFigure 2 is a transverse through the device.
Figu
sectional view re 3 is a transverse sectional view, showing the signaling device after being released.
Figure 4 is a rear view of the device.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary .top plan view of the guide and associated strip.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the paper rest, 2 the bead thereof, and- 3 the laten, all of which are of conventional orm.
The attachment comprises a resilient clamping sleeve 4 which has associated therewith a jaw plate 5 and a relatively long jaw plate 6 provided, respectively, with actuating handles 7 and 8, the former having a slot 9 therein, the purpose of which will be later explained. As clearly showninIBigures 2 and 3 the sleeve 4 of the clamp engages the head 2 and at which time the jaw 5 engages the front face of'the rest 1 while the jaw 6 extends longitudinally of the rear face thereof. 1 l
As shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, a aging clamps 10 are ed and secured inoneendthereofiaarodmhavingan and when 1n place thereon is -op-- 28 to rest angular extension 13, and telescopically engaged in said tube is a rod 14 which is also prov1ded with an angular extension 15, the respective extensions eing fitted inthe terminal coils 16 formed upon the outer ends of the rod 17, the inner ends of said rod bemg provided with hook's18 designed to slidably engage the jaw plate 6,'thus sustaining the associated parts in proper relation with respect to the paper rest 1.
The clamps 10 comprise inner and outer resiliently connected arms 19 and 20, respectively, the latter having resilient ears 21 for slidably engaging the tube 11, saidtube being formed with recesses 22 for engagement with said ears to hold the clamps 1O inadjusted positions upon the tube in order that the clamps will be properly positioned with, respect to the signaling device. device comprises the sheet metal guide 23 having inturnedflanges 24, said flanges having their inner edges spaced and provided with diametricall op osed pointers 25, the purpose of whic wil be later explained. The bottom of the guide 23 is provided'with a tongue 25 adapted to pivotally engage the slot 9 of the handle 7 in order that the guide may rock.
Slidably retained in the guide 23 is a strip 26 formed from metal which is somewhat p11- able and is bent into loop formation, as shown in' Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. The rear end of this strip is provided with spaced wings 27 and swingable between said wings is a bell 28, pivoted as at 29 to said strip. Fixed to the strip 26 between the wings 27 is a piece of felt 30 and upon which the bell rests when the device is held by the letter sheet ,31 so as to prevent sounding of the bell when the carriage is shifted, or subjccted to other movement.
Upon reference to Figure 1 it will be ob: served that the letter sheet 31 is engaged upon the upper surface of the strip 26 and holds the same in a osition to cause the bell upon the elt. strip 30 and prevent sounding thereof. The arms 19 of the clamps 10 will hold the letter sheet 31 taut, in order that it will not bulge or bend at its point of contact with said strip. As soon as the loweredge of the sheet 31 disengages the adjacent end of the strip 26, said strip will rock to the position as s ownin Figure 8, whereupon the" rear end of said stnp will This signaling swing freelj and soun swing inwardly, thus permitting the bell to an alarm to indicate 4 that the sheet 31 has reached a. predeterclam sam'econtact'mg therewith.
7 due to the fact that the hoo so; may be provide mined mined v the last printed line upon the sheet 31 may be accurately determin -It will beobvious that the arms 20 of the s have their lower ends resting upon the p aten 3 in such position that the paper sheet 31 will be deflected away from the strip 26 to preventany possibility of the Since the tube lltelescopicall engages the rod 14, said'rod and tube and t e associated, parts can be adjusted to fit paper rests of various sizes, which is readil accomplished '18- are slidable upon the jaw plate 6. I have shown the attachment in use upon the paper rest of an Underwood tgpewriter, but it will 'be of course under that by minor changes the attachment can be used in connection with other makes of tg'pewriters. The jaw 1m 6" with a series of note ea 82' points in 'order that the distance of I gaged with the masses for engagement with the hooks 18 m order to maintain the same in adjusted positions.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: i I
1. The combination with the paper rest and platen of a t ewriter, of a clamp removabl engaged w th the aper rest,"a guide pivota y connectedwith t e clamp adzistably mounted in the guide and havin a ll pivotally connected to, its rear en, said strip beingheld against pivotal movement when a letter sheet engaged with the platen engages the forward end thereof, said strip bein releasable for' pivotal movement to sound t e bell when the said sheet disengages the forward end of said strip.
2. The combination with the paper rest 1 and platen of a ty ewriter, of a clamp detachabl engaged with the aper rest, a stri adjustahly associated wit the clamp an having a signalingdevice u p n its'rear end, clamps adjustably associate with the aper rest'for holdin a letter sheet positive y enorward end of the stri said strip bein permitted to rock when t e letter sheet isengages the forward end of the same to permit sounding of the signaling device.
