FLASH-LIGHT STANDARD.
Application filed Kay 20, 1926, Serial No. 110,685. Renewed February 16; 1927.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved'standard or support for flashlights which can be readily collapsed against the body of the flashlight or exr tended from it.
These and otherobjects of this invention will be fully illustrated .in the drawing, described in the specification? and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flashlight with the standard attached thereto and extended to support the flashlight.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the flashlight and the standard the section being taken on the line 2" x of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the standard, the section being taken on the line 3*-3" of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the flashlight body with the standard attached to it and illustrated in its collapsed position.
In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The standard forming the subject matter of my present invention is to support the flashlight so that its light beam can be focused against any desired point at any elevation without having to hold the flashlight in the hand. The use of the ordinary flashlight is very inconvenient when it'is necessary for the user of the flashlight to use both ofhis hands so that he has to lay the flashlight aside by placing it on the ground or other suitable point. Usually this makes it impossible to direct the light from the flashlight so that it illuminates the desired area.
My new standard will obviate this defect and may be either permanently attached to the body of the flashlight to form an integral part of it or made attachable thereto so that the standard can be used with any flashlight having a diameter that will be gripped by the clamping means provided thereon.
As illustrated in the drawings the standard comprises the lazy tongs 1 which are pivoted at the upper end on the pivot pin 2. This pin is mounted in the casing 3. The casing is formed by a channel and the pivot pin 2 is located in the middle thereof. To the casing 3 is attached the spring clamp 4 which is adapted to partially encircle the flashlight body and firmly hold the casing in place thereon. The lower ends of the lazy tongs are attached to the cover 5 which 7 tended and collapsed between the casing 23 and the cover 5 to form a standard wheir extended or be concealed within the casing and cover when collapsed.
The bottom of the cover 5 is depressed in the middle and a flat bar 9 is pivoted in the center thereof. 'This bar is as wide as the cover and is adapted to be turned so that it will be either in line with the cover or at right angles thereto. The bar is placed in line with the cover when the standard is collapsed so as to confine the parts of the standard into as small a space as possible.
When the standard is extended the bar is turned at right angles so as to form a base with the cover that will support the standard with the flashlight attached thereto.
Sufficient frictional engagement is provided in the pivotal connection of the upper end of the standard with the casing 3 so that the fiashlightbody-can be turned into any angular position on the standard and held in this position as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1. In this Way the light from the the flashlight can be pointed in any direction and elevation without the flashlight being held in he hand.
I claim:
1. A support for flashlights comprising a standard, pivotal means connecting the upper end of said standard with the body of the flashlight, a base at the lower end of said standard, means provided on said base to increase or decrease its area and a casing supported on the pivotal means in which the standard is adapted to be concealed when collapsed.
2. A support for flashlights-comprising a casing, a collapsible standard pivoted with its upper end in said casing, a cover for said casing, means for connecting the lower end of said standard to said cover and allow it to ,clamping" means extend and collapse between said cover and said casing, a supporting bar pivoted on said cover and adapted to extend at right angles thereto to form abase for said standard.
3. A support for flashlights comprising a casing, a collapsible standard pivoted with its upper end in said casing, a cover for said casing, means for connecting the lower end of said standard to said cover and allow it to extend and collapse between said cover and said casing,.a supporting bar pivoted on said cover and adapted to extend at right angles thereto to form a base for said standard, provided on said casing adapted to clamp said support to the body of the flashlight. 1 a

lower end of one of said lazy tongs being pivoted to said cover and the lower end of the other or said lazy tongs being slidably connected to said cover, a. bar pivoted on said cover and adapted to form a base with said cover.
5, A pocket barrel adapted to hold furnishing the energy flashlight having an elongated therein the batteries to the lamp of the flashlight, a base therefor having a cross bar swinging thereon to enlarge or decrease the area thereof, an upright member attached to the base below and to the elongated barrel above, said base and the upright member thereof being collapsible compactly against one side of the barrel of the flashlight about the middle part thereof, said base and said upright member, when erected, supporting the flashlight in an approximately horizontal position in stable equilibrium with the center of gravity of the flashlight above and within the enlarged base.

A pocket flashlight having a tubular body, a support therefor having a. collapsible standard, a channel pivoted at the bottom of said standard, said standard at the top pivotally supporting the flashlight, said channel forming the baseandhaving a cross bar pivoted thereon, said channel being adapted to have said standard nested therein.
9. A pocket flashlight having a tubular body, a support therefor comprising a base, an upright member attached to the base below and supporting the flashlight above, said base and the upright member being collapsible against one side of the barrel ot'the flashlight and when erected supporting the center of gravity of the flashlight above and within the base, said base having a cross bar pivoted thereon.
10. A pocket flashlight having a tubular body, a support therefor comprising a base, an upright member attached to the base below and supporting the flashlight above, said base and the upright member being coinposed of parts collapsible one within the other against one side of the barrel of the flashlight and when erected supporting the center of gravity of the flashlight above and within the base, said base having a cross bar pivoted thereon.
11. A pocket flashlight having a tubular body, a support for said flashlight having anarrow base and a standard, said base having an element swinging thereon from the line therewith to a position at right angles thereto to enlarge the area of the base, the support being adapted to collapse in the plane of the narrow base.
12. A flashlight having a tubular body, a support for said flashlight having a narrow laterally expanding base and a standard, said base and standard collapsing to a line substantially parallel to the axis of the flashlight and adjacent to its body.
