PUMP.
Application led February 13, 1926. Serial No. 88,005.
This invention is directed to improvements in piston pumps. Such pumps usually embody check valves disposed at the inlet and outlet ports thereof which are respectively responsive to suction and pressure upon the operation of the piston. Such valves usually entail the embodiment of a number of accurately machined partsin the pump, eventually resulting in an inefficientln operation of the pump due to wear. The ingress of extraneous matter carried into the pump by the fluid passing therethrough 'also frequently interferes with -the accurate seating of the valve members. The general object of my invention therefor is the provision of a -valve mechanism in the form of a simple unitary structure,
which in my present embodiment 'is illustrated as being particularly adaptable for use in oscillating piston pumps and which mechanism is of such character as to eliminate the use of the usual check or poppet valve members.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an losc-illating'pump embodying a minimum number of'parts, economically formed, which will efficiently function irrespective of the ipresence of extraneous solid matter in the lfluid passing through the A still further object of my inventionis the'provision of a simple valve mechanism for a pump of the character referred to which'may comprise a single member for controlling the pump inlet and outlet ports.
Other objects of my invention will hereinafter be set forth in the following description referrin to the accompanying drawingsillustrating a -preferred form thereof.
' of the casing as will b e hereinafter described.
l The essential characteristics are summarized in the claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an oscillating pist-on pump embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a member comprising all'of the valve mechanism of the pump. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pump piston. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation taken through the center of the pump. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view similar to the view shown in Fig. 5 but illustrating a shifted position of the valve mechanism. Fig. 7 is a crosszsectional view 'similar to the view' -valve decks or valve carrying membersl with at least two valve members operatively attached to each deck.'
My invention contemplates the use of a simple valve -mechanism which may also comprise the casing partitioning means and in Figs. 4 and 5, I show the pump as comrising the usual casing 10 having a suitable ore for receiving the `oscillating piston 11 and a' partitioningl meansin the form of an oscillating valve member 12. The piston is provided with a shaft 14 and the-=casing is suitably formed at one end as shown at 15 to afford Aa bearing for properly supporting the piston shaftv 14. A stuffing box gland 16, packing sleeve l7vand a `nut :18 carried. by the casing serve to pack. the shaft 14. An operating handle 2O is shown in Fig. 4, mounted on an extension of the shaft 14 and operating the piston 11. The opposite end of the casing may be sealed by a closure disk 22, having formed at its center a cup-shaped portion 24 to receive a spring member 25 at its inner end, bearing against the valve member 12 to urge the latter member into contact with'the end of the piston and an end wall The closure member 22 may be secured to the casing by any suitable means such as boltmembers, indicated at in Fig. 6.
The casing may be provided with an upper threaded branch 9 in communication. with the interior of the casing throu( h an outlet port 10h and a lower threaded ranch 9a 1n communication with the interior of the cas- These. passegeivafs extend in; a. cnisscross' arms. contactat: theA ends thereon with thcbore of the casing and oscillaie; incompart-- ments 31 and 32. which are formed Within the pump casing by the peculiar constructiom of the valve member 12.
