Application. :tiled March The' present invention, rela-ting, as inclicated, to switch mechanism, is more particularly directed to an improved type of quick-opening switch for use in connection with elevator doors. lit is desirable to provide means in connect-ion with elevator enclosure doors for breaking the operating circuit for the car as soon as the doors ot the enclosure are open and for maintaining the circuit open as long as the doors are open. The present invention is directed to an improved type of switch for this purpose. To the accomplishment or the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring now to Fig. 1, there is shown an elevator enclosure 1, provided with a door 2, locking means 3 and latch e therefor, and a carriage 5 from which the door is suspended and which moves with the door to the lett during opening.
Mounted at the top of the enclosure 1 is a` switch member 6 in the form of a hollow casing 7, in which. is reciprocablv mounted a plunger 8 carrying a roller 9 at its lower end and sliding through a cylindrical member 10 which acts as a guide for the plunger 8, and also as a support for electrical conducting wires 11 and 12, which pass into the casing through openings 13 and 14, respectively, therein. Extending from the strips 17 and 18 are contact lingers 19 and 20, respectively, which extend downwardly from the block 10 and into position to be contacted by means of a metal disk 25 carried on a cylindrical fiber disk 26, which is freely movable o n the plunger 3. The circuit is closed through the resilient fingers 19 and 2O and the metal disk Q5 when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 3. On the plunger 3 is a flange 27, which actuates the disk 26 into its upper or closing position when the plunger is litted while the circuit is opened noon the dropping of the .plunger 8 by the zltaneous tall of this disk 25y by its own ight. A weight member 28 may be attached to the top of the plunger to insure the positive dropping of the plunger.
ltlounted on the carriage 5, adjacent to the plunger, is a pivoted trackway or plate 30, which is hinged about the axis 31 to a boxlike structure 32 mounted on the carriage. Une side of this structure 32 is formed at an angle to the horinontal to provide a second trackway 33 for the roller 9 on the plunger for the purpose now to be described. lllhen the door is closed the plunger rests at one end, as indicated at 3d, of the horizontal track 30, as seen in Fig. 1. As the door is moved to the lett the roller 9 rides od the end ot this trackway and the plunger drops suddenly, allowing the disk 25 to also drop and break the circuit. This action is edected during iirst travel of the door in opening. Upon the return movement of the door the beveled side 35 of the roller 9 on the plunger engages over the inclined track 33 and rolls up this trackw y, lifting the pivoted power trackway 30 with it, as shown in Fig. 3, until it reaches the flat end portion 36 of the track which is lbeyond the end ot the pivoted track 30. rEhe latter is thus allowed to return to its horizontal position and the roller rides over this horizontal trackway unt-il it drops oill on thc next opening movementof the door.
The present switch mechanism gives an extremely quick switch opening', is simple in construction. and because of the rotation of the plunger 3, cltcctcd by the engagement of the beveled roller 9 on the edges oit the trackways. the switch lingers 19 and 2O contact at different points on the disk 25 at every closing of the switch so that the wear on t-he -to rotate through the engagement of Vrotation presents the contact switch elements proper is Vdistributed over the entire surface of a relatively large metal disk. A switch mechanism comprising a hollow casing, contact members carried therein, a vertically reciprocable plunger carried the in said casing, a metallic disk mounted on said plunger, and movable means adapted to raise the plunger to engage said disk with said contact members, said means being also adaptedV to rotate said plunger and said lunger being adapted to drop downwardly its Own weight when not engaged by said means.
