MEANS non PREVENTING LEAKAGE AROUND STAY w'mns onooncanrn warns Application filed. November 20, 1928. Serial No. 149,556.
ends of stay'or reinforcing wires or rods to prevent leakage through the wall around the wires or rods, and also to a device for use in connection with and to facilitate such treatment.
. In masonry work the form boards for concrete walls or the like are customarily tied together in spaced relation by cross wires which extend'through the wall when formed and extend from the sides thereof through the form boardsand around outside braces. When the forms are removed, the tie wires are usually cut off close to the'wall, and unless the exposed ends of these wires are sealed with respect to the wall, leakage occurs through the wall around the wires, and thistendency to leak is increased by the rusting and consequent reducing in size of the wires. v i
To prevent such leakage, ithas been customary, after the forming of a Wall and removal of the forms, to chip away the concrete to provide a pocket or recess in the wall surface around the exposed end of the wire, and after cutting the wire end ofit' or turning it back within the pocket, to then fill the pocket with a sealing cement flush with the wall side to prevent leakage.
This is a tedious, expensive and uncertain method of preventing such leakage, inasmuch as it is very difiicult and takes considerable time, especially when extremely hard water-proof cement is used, to chip out the cement to form the pockets, and in view of this difficulty workmen are very apt to make the pockets so shallow that an etl'ective sealing cannot be obtained, and this cannot be determined from an inspection of the work after it is completed. It also frequently happens that the workmen will miss some of the wire ends.
The object of thisinvention is the provision of a method, and means for carrying it out, for sealing the exposed wire ends of concrete work in a manner which is easy, simple, inexpensive and efficient, and which obviates the objections and diiiiculties incident to the methods heretofore employed.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and an embodiment of the same illustrated inthe accompanying draw1ngs,1n'wh1ch,- i s Figure l is a top VIEWOf a concrete wall with the formboardsfin place and with a portion broken away to show pocket form ing means embedded in'the side surfaces of the wall in encircling relation to respective tie wires. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section of Fig. l taken centrally through" the pocket forming member longitudinally of the associated tie wire. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary section of the wall similar to Fig. 2 with the form boards removed, the associ? ated end of the tie wire turned back within the pocket, and the pocket filled with cement. Fig. 4: is a perspective outer end view'of a.
pocket forming member embodying the invention with a tie wire extending there" through, and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the pocket forming member in the act of being engaged with a tie wire.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a concrete wall, 2 the form boards at op jositc sides thereof, 3 the stay-boards or members at the outside of the form boards, and l the tie wires, which extend through the wall, or the space between the form boards, and tie the form boards together in proper rela tion, as well understood in the art. Thesetie wires are usually oi? continuousloop or endless form with their outer end portions looped over the stay members 3 and their cross runs extending through holes in the form boards and twisted together between A simple and efficient form of member for this purpose is illustrated in the drawings and consists of asubstantiallycomcal shaped ,member with one side closed alonga line substantially parallel to the axis of thecone. lhe member has a centrally disposed open ing 7 at its apex portion through which the Wire 4 extends, and in order to enable the member 6 to be placed in engagement ith a wire the member is split, as shown at 8, along the side thereof, which is substantially parallel toits axis and with the, split extending from the opening 7 to the outer edge off the member. One edge wallofthe member 6 at the split Sis provided with en inwardb turned flange 9, the enter end of which, br that disposed n the large end of the cone member, beingprojected beyond the member and sherpened'to form a brad 10 for driving ta ing into ,tlieiinne x ide f n ess cieiedfe m b s iltolieldhemem 6 in fixed relation thereto, [Elie bred is been form and is prefergibly forced into a board with the flatness thereof parallel with the grain of the jboerd. lfVhenthe form is removed from theoonerete the wires lere cnt withont the form bo z rdsto permit them to be drawn through theboerds. If the pocket forming members (5 do not withdraw from theflco icrete with tl e-boz rds,,they may be easily removed from theconcrete by gripping the flange 9 with a pair of pliers endithen applying a twist ing strain to the flange so as try-tend to contriict the size of the member to permit it to be ezisily withdrawn from the wall. This I is made possible by reesonlof the slitted form of the same.
When the members 6 here been removed from the well the exposed ends or the Wires 4: are either cut oil within the pockets or turned back therein, as shown in 3, zrnd the pocket thenfilled with concrete or a, suitiible seelingmeteriel. {By turning the wire back within the pocket it provides an the opening 7.
