Description

F. W. ELLYSON WATER HEATER AND STEAM GENERATOR Filed April 25, 1922 Patented Jan. 24, 1928.
1,657,202 PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK WASHINGTON ELLYSON, OF MUNICH, GERMANY.
WATER HEATER AND STEAM GENERATOR.
Application led April 25, 1922 Serial No. 556,521.
There are known steam generators and water heaters in which, in contradistinction to the boilers with large water space or to smoke-tube boilers, the evaporation is accelerated, and restricted to a relatively small space, by conducting the water which is cir- Culated by a pump or a head through narrow, more or less spirally-shaped passages of circular or oval transverse section, which are heated from their outer side and at one end of which either hot water or steam is discharged, according to the length of the 'passage and to the temperature of the heating medium.
The steam generators and hot-water producers constructed and yoperating according to that principle are subject, to the drawback that the narrow tubes get easily clogged and can no morelbe cleaned, especially if the clogging is due to incrustation, to oil-soaps resulting from condensed steam or the like.
The present invention relates to a water heater and steam generator based on the above-mentioned principle, but distinguished from the known constructions by the feature that the sectional area of the spirally shaped passage in which the water is exposed to the heatof the heating gases is reduced from below to abovel so that the water, in flowing through this passage, is
heated with increasing rapidity and is, finally, evaporated, the steam being, lultimately, superheated, provided, there be sufficient heat available for this purpose. This may be regulated as required 1n the various cases.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawing, in which similar numbers of reference denoteY similar parts throughout the several views, and l in which Fig. 1 is an axial section through the threaded inner tube-like body of a constructional example of a steam generator and water heater constructed according to this invention, the left hand half of the ligure showing in dotted lines the body or tube in its original cylindrical state, the other half showing the-body or tube after it has been turned in such a manner as to form a hollow truncated'cone. Fig. 2 is an axial section through the finished steam generating or water heater double-body.
1 (left hand half of Fig. 1) is a cylindrical hollow body consisting preferably of pressedcast iron or the like and having a rolled or milled or cut thread, of which A-B' is the outer boundary line. The
thread is turned oi in a measure increasing from the one end of the cylinder 1 to thev other end, namely corresponding to the line C--D (right hand half of Fig. l) so that a hollow truncated cone results. A correspondingly shaped tapering tube 2 (Fig. 2) is shoved upon the threaded truncated cone 1 and is firmly connected with it by means of flanges 5 and bolts (not shown). The tube 2 has branches 3 and 4 forconnecting it, or the passage or passages of the body 1 respectively, with asupply tube and a discharge tube. I
Tightening or packing the single convolutions of the helical passage with respect to each other is not necessary because the differences of pressure and of temperature are very small. Even if there should be a slight direct axial communication between two convolutions, or, may be a plurality of such communications or leaks that would be of no consequence partly on account of the throttling at the respective place or places, partly on account of the fact that practically all water particles are borne along with the current which circulates more or less quickly through the helical passage which the thread forms.
I claim- 1. A water heater and steam generator, comprising, in combination, a thick-walled vertical tube having a helical groove, the sectional area of which is reduc-ed progressively from inlet to outlet, and a shell shoved over said groove.
2. A water heater and steam generator,
comprising, in combination, a thick-walled vertical tube tapering in upward direction and having in its outer surfacea h elical groove, the sectional area of which 1s reduced in upward direction from a lower '1nlet to an upper outlet, and a shell fittmg said oove.
3. water heater and steam generator, comprising, in combination, a thick-walled vertical tube tapering in upward direction and having in its outer surface a helical groove of uniform inside diameter, the sectional area of which is thus reduced 1n upward direction from a lower inlet to an upper outlet, and a shell fitting the outside of the tube to close said groove.
In` testimony whereof I affix my signature.
