PATEN VALVE-SPRING HOLDER.
Application filed December 17, 1926. Serial No. 155,453.
This invention relates to an improved automotive accessory and'has more particular reference to an improved valve spring holder.
l. am aware, of course, that a multitude of different kinds oi devices known as valve litters and valve spring litters have been patented and marketed for use in connection with internal combustion engine valves for maintaining the coiled springs in compressed condition to permit removal of the spring cup retainer, and subsequent removal of the valve and stem for grinding of the valve seat. Most of these devices, however, co1nprise intricate tool structures made up of levers and links frequently so constructed as to render the same undependable and diiticult to manipulate.
Briefly, the present invention relates to a one-piece body in the form of an open ended cylinder adapted to surround the lower end of the valve stem and the upper end of the valve push pin, the same being engaged at its upper end with the spring cup and at its lower end with the push pin guide. I am also aware that devices of this general character such as shown in Patent No. 1,113,258 to O. E. Stewart, October 18, 1924:, and No. 1,185,241 to R. D- Radcliii', May 80, 1916, are old.
It follows that my primary aim is to improve upon valve spring litters of these gen eral types by providing one wherein the cylinder is formed on one side with finger notches to facilitate gripping and removal of the horse shoe or cotter pin such as is used on the valve stem for holding the cup in place.
Another feature is in having the lower end of the cylinder constructed in a manner to fit snugly down and over the push pin guide to prevent accidental displacement of the device and consequent displacement of the valve spring.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
.ln the accompanying drawings forming a part or this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional and elevational view of a portion of an internal combustion engine valve structure showing the improved valve spring holder associated therewith.
provided with a central stem 2 extending down through a guide 8 in the cylinder block, which is also provided with a Valve seat 1. The crank case is represented at 5-, and rotatable in this is a cam shaft 6 having a cum '5' engaging the lower end of the push pin or tappct rod 8. This extends up through a bored protuberance 9 functioning as a guide. The usual valve spring 10 surrouncs the stem and rests in an ordinary cup 11 held in place by a horse shoe retainer 12. 01 course, all of these parts are of conventional form and constitute no part of the invention, being shown merely for the purpose of demonstration oi the operation of the invention.
The invention is generally represented by the reference character 18 and as before stated it is in the form of a single body of generalcylindrical form represented at 14;. This is open at its opposite ends, and one side is cut away and the edges thereof are formed with curved finger notches 15 which, obviously, serve to permit removal of the horse shoe retainer 12 as represented in Figure 2. l. have designated a portion 16 as a web and wish to call attention to the fact that this serves to surround the guide 9 as shown in Figure 2 and to be ammed tightly down over the same in telescoping relation to prevent displacement oi the device.
In operation, the cam shaft 6 is so turned as to elevate the valve 1 oil or" the seat 4 as represented in Figure 1, thus compressing the spring 10. Thisspaces the valve stem from the push rod in an obvious manner, thus aiiording sufiicient space to permit the relatively thin gage metal cylinder to be passed therebetween and then set in an up right position between the guide 9 and the under side of the valve spring cup 11. Now the valve may be lowered so as to bring the horse shoe down opposite the finger notches to permit it to be removed and to permit subsequent removal of the valve and its stem.
Even after the valve is removed the spring is maintained in compressed condition so as to pei'n'iit ellleient. i'esuit'aeing of the valve seat.
It to he stated that the only difference hctween Figure 3 and the other figure is that a more modern type of tappet pin guide is FliOWlL the same being in the form of a reinoi'ahle hashing. In this instance the device heats down on the top flange of the bushing.
It is helieied that by considering the de- Ft'llpllitm in connection with the drawing a idea!- understanding of the invent on will be had. i hei' itoi'e, a more lengthy (ltRtliPtiOH thought unnecessary.
lVhile the preferred en'ihodiinent. of the invention has been shown and desei'iliied, it is to he understood that minor changes in Phone and size, may he resorted to without departing from the spirit of the iHYLHtiOU as claimed.
lilaving thus described the ii'iventicm, what I claim is:
As a new product 0 1' nnmntaetnie, a valve spring litter of the class (ileserihed comprising an open ended eylindei' having" the major part of one side cut away to provide an entrance, the opposite edges of the entrance being formed with finger notches-1, and the lower portion of said Cyllntltlt lining in C0111 plete e x 'lindi' eal town to permit; it to he teie' retipltttlly e iigag't-d with a valve pneh pin guide.
