GAS BURNER.
Application filed. August 5, 1926, Serial No, 127,228, and in Germany March 5, 1928.
My invention relates to gas burners such as are used for example in metallurglcal furnaces. and boilers. More particularly my invention relates to improvements in burners of the type in which the fuel and theair for supporting combustion are delivered into the mixing chamber respectively in axial and tangential direction, and in which a plurality of tangential nozzles are provided.
1' The object of the improvements is to provide a burner of this type in which gas and fuel are intimately mixed, and in which the axial and tangential jets of fuel completely permeate each other, so that the whole mass of M gas is subject to the intermingling process.
With this object in view my invention consists in providing the burner with a plurality of tangential nozzles as well as with a plurality of axial nozzles. I have found that by thus thoroughly intermingling the jets of gas a jet of the mixture is produced which has a whirling motion resultmgun a developed flame having a comparatively ,short zone in which the flame is formed.
For the purpose of explaining the invention two examples embodying the same have been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same lettersof reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawing, a

In the example shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the burner comprises a combustion chamber a and a mixing chamber 7) of c lindrical form. At the rear of the mixing 0 amber b there is a chamber 0 having an axial supply g for air or gas and communicating with the mixing chamber 6 through nozzles or holes 03 disposed parallel to the axis of the burner. Further the mixing chamber is provided with inlet openings or nozzles e disposed tangentially of the said chamber. In the operation of the burner one of the fluids, for example as, is delivered into the mixing chamber rom the chamber a and through the nozzles d and in axial direction, while the other fluid, in the present case air for supporting combustion, is delivered into the mlxmg chamber in tangential direction. There ore the jets of gas and air impinge on each other in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 2 showing the whirling motion of the mixture delivered into the combustion chamber'a.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the chamber a has a cylindrical rear extension, and a tubular member 7 extends concentrically into the said rear extension thus forming an annular mixing chamber 6, the tubular member f being provided with a flange h by means of which it is secured to the wall of the mixing chamber 6. The tubular member f is closed at its inner end a, and it is provided with circumferential holes or nozzles 6, opening tangentially into the mixing chamber 6 as is best shown in Fig. 5. The tubular member f is extended outwardly so as to provide an annular chamber It, which chamber communicates with the annular chamber 6 through nozzles or bores 03 made in the flange k and disposed parallel to the axis of the burner. in the operation of the burner gas and air are delivered into the mixing chamber 6 where they are intimately mixed, the mixturepassing into the combustion chamber a having a whirling motion.
I claim:
1. A. burner comprising a circular mixing chamber having a plurality of inlet openings disposed parallel to the axis of said mixing chamber, and having a plurality of inlet openings disposed tangentially to the axis of the chamber, and a fuel supply for said parallel and tangential openings, so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an angle.
2. A burner comprising a circular mixing chamber having a plurality of inlet openings disposed parallel to' the axis of the chamber, and adjacent its inner periphery, and having a plurality of inlet openings disposed tangentially to the axis of the chamher, and a fuel and air supply for said parallel and tangential openings, so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an angle.

A burner comprlsing a circular mixing chamber, having a plurality of. inlet openings adjacent its inner peri hery,"and dis ed parallel to the axis of t e chamber an having a plurality of inlet openings in the periphery of the mixing chamber and disposed tangentially to the axis of the mixin chamber, and a fuel and air supply for said arallel and tangential opemngs, so that t e flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an ang e.

A burner comprisin a circular mixing chamber having a lura 'ty of inlet openings disposed para el to the axis of the chamber and having a plurality of inlet 0 nings disposed tangentially to the axis 0 the mixing chamber so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at right angles.
6. burner comprising a circular mixing chamber having a plurality of parallel inlet openings parallel with the axis of the mixing chamber and having a plurality of inlet 0 'ngs disposed tangentially to the axis oi th e mixing chamber, and said tangential and parallel openings arranged so that the supp y of fuel and airthrough the openings of inlet will im imge each other and cause a whirling of t e mixture in the chamber.
A burner comprising a circular mixing chamber having a transverse artition intermediate its ends, said partit1on having a plurality of parallel openings arranged parallel with the axis of the chamber, a central suppl for said space formed by the partition an the outer periphery of said mixing chamber having a plurality of openings arranged tangentially to the axis of the mixing chamber, and tie jets of air and fuel passing throu h said openings ada ted to impinge each other and cause a whir ing of the mixture in the mixin chamber.
8. A burner comprising a circular mixing chamber having a lurality of ihlet openings disposed para lel to the axis of the chamber, and having an inlet opening disposed tan entially to the axis of the mixing chamber or each arallel opening so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an angle.
9. A burner comprisin a circular mixing chamber having a plura ity of inlet openings disposed arallel to the axis of the chamber and c ose to the inner periphery thereof, and having a plurality of inlet openings disposed tangentially to the axis of the mixing chamber so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an angle thereto.
10. A burner comprising a mixing chambcr having a plurality of inlet openings (lisposed parallel to the axis of the chamber and close to the inner periphery of the chamber, and an inlet opening disposed tangentially to the axis of the mixing chamber or each parallel opening so that the flow of fuel and air through said parallel and tangential openings will impinge each other at an angle thereto.
