This linvention relates to a manifold for an exhaust gas heater and is more particularly adapted for luse in the better qualit-y 'of automobiles, where it is desired to have a plurality of heaters.
I have here shown a manifold which distributes the exhaust gases to a. pair of heaters, but obviously more outl-ets could be added if desired. -In exhaust gas heaters it is the practice to tap the exhaust conduit as close to the engine as possible and by so doing one is very liable to transmit a good share of the noises resulting from the explosions in the internal combustion engine to the heaters, therefore making them audible to the occupants of the car. This is quite objectionable, especially so in the better quality cars.
The object of this manifold construction is to distribute the exhaust gas equally to the heaters and in addition to so turn the stream of gas that the impulses are broken up,k
thereby muifling the noise without taking away and appreciable amount of heat units from the exhaust gases.

In the better grade ears, it is a. decided im- 4l) provement to provide a couple of heaters which may be both located in the rear part of the car or to provide one or more heaters in both compartments of the automobile. a and a' designate heaters which are secured to the floor b of the automobile. My invention relates to the manifold which is placed in communication with the intakes c and c 0f the heaters. This manifold construction comprises a hollow casting e provided with the intake port f, to which is secured the conduit g, which is placed in communication with the exhaust line so as to allow the exhaust gas from the engine to p ass therein. This manifold is a special casting and 1s substantially circular in plan, though obviously the general configuration of the manifold is of no moment. This manifold is preferably flattened, thereby bringing the top andV bottom walls of the casting fairly close together in comparison to the width or diameter of the man-v ifold. This casting is 'provided with any desired number of outletopenings, depend ing upon the number of heaters which are to be attached thereto.
In the drawings I have shown two outlets, though more could be added, depending upon the capacity of the engine. These out-- let ports are arranged by providing a pair of holes of in the manifold casting, said holes being directly opposite' to each other, one at the top and one in the bottom of the casting. Fitted through these holes is a nipple 7i., which is internally threaded at one end as at z', to receive a union ,7' for placing the manifold in communication with the intakes c and c of the heat-ers. The opposite end of the nipple is externally threaded as at le. An enlarged flange m is carried by this nipple, which is of larger diameter than the holes and adapted to abut against one side of the casting. The intermediate portion of the nipple, which is of tubular construction, is provided with aV plurality of ports n which are so located as to register with the interior of the manifold. A nut o v is screwed onto the exterior threads of the nipple and when drawn down tightly will tightly secure 'the nipple to the manifold casting. In the operation of the heaters the exhaust gas is injected into the interior of the manifold through the inlet port f and then passes through the ports n into the interior of the nipple, from where it is led into the exhaust heater for the purpose specified.
Pillars 79 are cast integral with the manifold for the purpose of reinforcing the same and preventing` the same from collapsing.
I claim:
l. A manifold for connecting a plurality of exhaust gas heaters to the exhaust line of an internal combustion engine, having in combination7 a flat circular manifold casting provided in the periphery with an intake in connection with the exhaust line, and

A manifoldV for connecting a plurality of?? exhaustl gas heaters' to the exhaustline of an internal combustion engine, havingin combination, a large flat circular manifold casting provided with an intake in connection with theexhaust line and provided'with an. outlet opening inthe fiat side adjacent theouteredge, and a nipple secured in said rvopening and arranged to bev each connected 'to` an exhaust gas heater and, said nipple plurality of outlet ports in the Hat side` structure adjacent the outer edge, nipples secured in said. outlet ports and. provided withinletopenings in registration with the interior of the,` manifold, and means for connecting a plurality ofV exhaust gas heaters, with the nipples to place the heaters inconnection withI the exhaust-line.

thereby permitting an even distribution of theexh-aust gases to all of said heaters.
6. A manifold for connecting a plurality of Vexhaust gas heaters to the exhaustline lof an internal combustion engine, having V inf combination, a manifold. casting provided Awith. an intake port in connection withv the exhaust line, said manifoldV casting having two sides flattened and shaped substantially circular in the plane of the flattened sides forv spreading the gases and impartingy a swirling action thereto, the said casting provided ',with openings in the' flattened side walls. adjacent the outer edge, the openings in the one side wall positioned directly' opposi'te the openings in the Vother side wall, nipples extending through said openings and provided with openings registeringl with the interior of the manifold' casting to permit..
