This invention relates to pressing machines of the type used for pressing gar- ,ments, laundry etc., and particularly to power actuated machines; of the type 1n '5 which the ress is closed by power and controlled in its opening movement by power, and has for its object a particularly simple and efiicient mechanism by which the machine opens by the weight or spring after a force holding the press closed has been released, by a momentary actuation of the motor or driver. it
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed:

This pressing machine comprises generally cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, an intermittently actuated, or a start and stop power or motor actuated driver, motion transmitting connections between the driver and the movable element of the machine for moving said element 1nto and holding it in closed position, means as weights or springs for actuating the movable element to open the press when relieved of the holding eifect of the driver, the mo tion transmitting connections comprising ratching or over-running clutch mechanism which ermits said connections to move relative y to the driver during the opening of the press. p
The pressing machine here shown is of the oonvential type and comprises an upper ressing element or a head 1, a lower pressmg element or buck 2 suitably mounted on 5 'a bracket 3 which in turn is mounted upon theframe 4. The press head 1 is carried in any suitable manner on the forward arm of a yoke or lever 5 pivoted at 6 between its ends to a standard 7 rising from the frame 4. The intermittentl actuated or start and stop driver is here s own as a wheel 8 actuated in any suitable manner from a start and stop electric motor 9, the motor being connected to the wheel through a shaft 10 having a worm 11 thereon meshingwith the wheel 8 which has worm teeth on its peri hery. v

As here illustrated, the motion transmit-- t1ng connections comprise a shaft 14 suitably ournalled in the frame, or housing 15' carried thereby, the shaft having an eccentrically mounted crank pin or roller 16 thereon which coacts with an arm or lever 17 pivoted at 18 to the frame, and a toggle consisting of links 19 and 20 pivoted together at 21 and pivoted respectively at 22 to the rear arm of a yoke 5 and the rear arm of the frame, the link 20 being rigid with the arm 17 and forminga bell "crank therewlth. A spring 22 connected to the arm 17 causes it to follow the crank pin or roller 16.
The over-running or ratchet mechanism is between the shaft 14 and the driver 8. As here illustrated, the driver 8 is mounted on the shaft 14 to rotate about the same and the over-running or ratchet mechanism comprises a clutch section 23 rotatable with the driver 8 and a clutch section 24 rotatable plied to the driver.
The start or stop or intermittent actuation of the motor is controlled in the machine here illustrated by the pressure, applied by the head 1 to the buck 2. This control feature forms no part of my invention and an suitable control may be used. As here i1 ustrated, the starting of the motor is controlled by manually operable switches or push buttons and the stopping thereof controlled by the maximum pressure be tween the head 1 and back 2.
27 designates diagrammatically an electric switch arranged, to bridge contacts 28 and 29 connected respectively in a line having manually operable switches or ush buttons therein and to the motor. In Tigure 4, the switch is shown as in its position occupied when the press is open.
To close the press, the operator depresses and holds depressed two push buttons or switches 30 and 31 which closes the circuit from the feed wires through the wires 32 33; contact 28, switch 27, contact 29 and through the motor, thus energizing the motor, causing it to turn thewheel 8 and hence the shaft 14, crank pin 16 to depress the lever 17 and through the connections 19, 20 and 5 to close the press. The switch is shown as carried by an arm 35 pivoted at 36 and as acted upon by a spring 37 connected at 38 at one end to a fixed point and at its other end at 39 to the switch arm 35, the spring being arranged to swing from one side of the pivot 36 to the other and giving the switch a snap action. As this type of switch is old in the electrical art, further description is thought to be unnecessary.
As the press closes, it applies predetermined pressure, the pressure acts to throw the switch from its position shown in full lines Figure 4 to that shown indotted lines so that the switch 27 now bridges contacts 40 and 41 and is out of engagement with the contacts 28 and 29. As before stated, this pressure operated means forms no part of this invention. In the machine here illustrated, the lower buck 2 is mounted on the bracket 3 to be depressed slightly relatively to the bracket against the action of a spring 42. Such depression, which occurs when a maximum pressure is being applied, actuates a piston 43 movable with the head 2 in a cylinder 44 formed in the bracket 3, and in so doing forces a medium as air or a fluid through a pipe 45 to a second cylinder 46 having a piston 47 therein, which piston 47 is connected by a rod 48 to the switch arm 35 above its pivot 36. Both pistons 42 and 47 are movable against the action of returning springs 49 and 50.
Obviously, as the maximum pressure is applied by the head 1 to the buck 2, the back 2. will be depressed, depressing the piston -42 in its cylinder 44, causing fluid to be pressed through the pipe 45 to the cylinder 46 thus actuating the piston 47 as through the piston rod 48, gradually actuating the switch arm 35 until it has been actuated far enougli to the right'to carry the joint 39 between the spring 37 and the arm 35 to the opposite side of the pivot 26, whereupon, the switch arm moves with a snap action out of engagement with the contacts 28, 29 into engagement with the contacts 41, 42. Hence, the motor is stopped. IVhen this occurs, the crank pin or roller 16 is in its position shown in Figure 1, that is, in a right angular or dead center relation to the arm 17.
The press is held closed by the fact that the crank 16 is in a right angular relation to the arm 17, as long as desired, and to open the press, the circuit is closed by a manually operable switch or push button 51 through the motor 9 and through the contacts 40,41 and switch arm 27. The contact 40 is connected in the line in which the push button 51. is mounted and this line 52 is connected by a wire 53 to the feed wire 54. The contact 41 is connected by a wire 55 to the motor which is connected by a return wire 56 to the feed wire 57. There fore, to open the press, the push button 51 is depressed closing the circuit through the motor 9 and through the contacts 40, 41, switch arm 27.
To close the press, both push buttons 30 and 31 must be held depressed until the press is closed. To open the press, a momentary closing only of the circuit through the motor is required in order that the motor may be given a starting impulse to move the crank 16 out of a right angular relation to the power arm 17, whereupon the counterweight 12 and sprin 13 complete the opening movement and during such completion of the opening movement, the shaft 14 can ratchet ahead of the driving wheel 8 which remains stationary after the circuit is broken. As the pressure on the lower buck 2 is relieved, the spring 43 reacting returns the switch 35 to its position where it bridges the contacts 28 and 29.
What I claim is:
1. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means and motion transmitting connections between the power means and the movable element for moving said element into closed position, additional means for actuating the movable element to open the press, the motion transmitting connections comprising mechanism permitting said motion transmitting means to advance relatively to the power means during the opening of the press.
2. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element toward closed position and for holding it in closed position comprising a start and stop driver and motion transmitting connections between the driver and the movable element, means acting on the motion transmitting connections to open the press, the motion transmitting connections including clutch mechanism for permitting the motion transmitting driver during the opening movement of the press. 7
3. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other", an intermittently movable driver, motion transmitting means between the driver and the movable element for moving said element into closed position and holding it in closed positioncomprising a crank and a follower coacting with the crank, the crank and follower being brought into a right angularrelation to each other when the press is closed, meansacting on the motion transmitting means to open the press, and the motion transmitting means comprising clutch mechanism for permitting said motion transmitting means to move in advance of the driver during the opening of the press.
4. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, an intermittently movable driver, motion transmitting connec tions between the driver and the movable element for moving said element into closed position and holding it in closed position, the motion transmitting connections comprising a shaft, a crank pin on the shaft and a follower coacting with the crank pin, the crank pin and the follower being arranged to be brought into a dead center relation to each other when the press is closed, means acting on the motion transmitting connections for opening the press, the motion transmitting connections comprising clutch mechanism permitting the motion transmitting connections to move in advance of the driver during the opening of the press.
5. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, an intermittently movable driver, motion transmitting connections between the driver and the movable element for moving said element into closedposition and holding it in closed position, the motiontransmitting connections comprising a shaft, a crank on the shaft and a follower coacting with the crank, the crank and the follower being arranged; to be brought into a dead center relation to each other when the press is closed,"means acting on .the motion transmitting connections for opening the press, the motion transmitting connections comprising clutch mechanism permitting the motion transmitting connections to move in advance of the driver during the opening of the press, said clutch mechanism comprising a section on the, driver and a clutch section on the shaft and slidable axially thereof, the clutch sections having coacting ratchet teeth and a spring for resisting axial movement of the clutch section on the shaft.
6. In a pressing machine, cooperating means to move in advance of the pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, an intermittently movable driver, motion transmitting connections between the driver and the movable element for moving said element into closed position, means acting on the motion transmitting connections to open the press, the motion transmitting connections comprising a shaft having a crank pin thereon and a lever coacting with the pin to follow the same, the lever and the crank pin being arranged to come into a dead center relation when the press is in closed position, the motion transmitting connections also comprising clutch mechanism between the shaft and the driver for permitting the shaft to rotate in advance of the driver during the opening of-the press and after the crank pin has been moved out of a dead center relation to the lever.
7. In a pressing machine, cooperating.

8. In a pressing machine the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element comprising an intermittently movable shaft, motion transmitting connec-' tions between" the shaftand the movable pressing element and means acting on the movable pressing element and on said connections tending to open the press and ro- 'tate the shaft, amotor for actuating the shaft, and an overrunning connection between the motor and the shaft permitting the shaft to run ahead relatively to the motor under the influence of the means tending to open the press head.
,9. In a pressing machine the combinatio of cooperating ressing elements, one of which is movabe toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element comprising an intermittently movable shaft, motion transmitting connec tions. between the shaft and the movable pressing element and means acting on the movable pressing elements and on said connections tending to open the press androtate the shaft, a motor for actuating the shaft and a ratcheting connection between the motor and the shaft permitting the shaft 10 to run ahead relatively to the motor undo]; the influence of the means tending to open the press head.
