Application filed November 5, 1923. Serial No. 672,918.
This invention relates to improvements in one-way brakes and it is an object of the invention to provide a mechanism of this general character embodying an operative connection between two shafts including a member loosely mounted on the shaft together with means for holding said member against rotation in one direction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangementof the several parts of my improved mechanism whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a brake mechanism constructed in accord ance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional. view taken substantially on the line hi of Figure 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, D denotes a drive shaft extending within a casing A, I
Freely mounted on the inserted portion of the shaft D is an end wall or head 5 of a housing 4, said end wall or head as herein disclosed being removably held in applied position by the screws 8. This particular mounting and arrangementpermits the hOllSlIlg' 4i and shaft D to have relative rotation.
Adjacent to the head or plate a of the casing A said casing is provided with an internal annular flange which extends between the annular member 36 and the peripheral portion of the disc 37. The disc 37 is mounted upon the shaft D while the annular member 36 is concentric to said shaft.
At diametrically opposed points the members 36 and disc 37 have disposed therethrough the aligned plugs 38 and 39, said plugs being arranged inwardly of the inner margin of the flange 35. Freely disposed through each of the plugs 38and in threaded or cammed engagement with the associated plug 39 is a shank 40, said shank 40 extending beyond the disc 37 and having secured to its extended portion a rocker arm il. The rocker arm 41 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 42 throughwhich extends an outstanding finger or lug 43 carried by the adjacent head 5 of the drum 4.
Normally, the arms 41 are disposed inwardly toward the shaft D and under which conditions the plate 37 and the member 36 are free from the flange 35. However, upon tendency of the drum 4 to have retrograde or anti-clockwise movement the fingers or lugs 43 will impart rocking movement to the shanks 40 resulting in the flange 35 being clamped between the member 36 and the disc 37 whereby the drum is effectively held against such reversed movement and when the drum 4: is rotating in the proper direction the member 36 and disc 37 aremaintained free of the flange 35.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a rotatable member and a fixed member provided with a clutch element, a second clutch element coacting with the element carried by the fixed member, a shank in threaded engagement with the second clutch element, means for supporting the shank, a slotted rock arm carried by the shank, and a part carried by the rotatable member extending within the slot of the rock arm to cause the shank upon movement of the rotatable member in one direction to lJIlIlg' the clutch element into working engagement to hold said rotatable member against further movement in such direction. i
2. In combination with a rotatable member and a fixed member provided with a clutch element, a second clutch element 00- acting with the element carried by the fixed one direction to cause said clutch elements to hold said rotatable member against further rotation in such direction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
VILLIAM ISIAH WHEELER.
