The combination with spaced segmental gears and counterweights carried thereby, of a recessed roadbed between the gears, means beneath the roadbed for simultaneously actuating the gears to swing the counterweights toward or from each other, main bars extending trom the counterweights and movable therewith, secondary bars, links providing Heating connections between each secondary bar and one of the main bars, means on the secondary bars for entering the recesses in the roadbed when the bars are moved to lowered position thereby to hold said bars against lateral shifting, cooperating means on the free ends of the main bars tor holdingr said bars against lateral shitting when brought to closed position. and yielding supports carried by the free ends of the main bars for engagement with the roadbed when the bars. are brought to closed position.
