'lhe valve stem 5 31s tubular Ill form so as to receive the driven. shaitt oi the rotary thud motor now to he described.
ll ithin the delivervduct 2, and immediately hencath the valve head ll, a rotary fluid motor 6 is arranged. llaid motor is proton chip of the luu'hinetype. the stator oil which is fixed in the wall ft the duct 9. the present controlling; mechanism the con- =;truction )rovidino' a slow rotation of the till 14 for the setting purpose hereinafter more fully set forth. The degree of frictional engagement between the gear wheel 14:, and disk 16, may be varied by any usual means, usuall an adjusting nut 17 on a screw threaded portion of the stub shaft 15, and an intermediate compression spring 18 and bearing washers 19 as shown more particularly in Fig. 5.
Upon the outer face of the aforesaid disk 16, an operating stud or tappet 20 is arranged for the purpose hereinafter set forth, while said disk is formed with a peripheral groove in which a cable 21 is arranged and secured to. afford means for effecting a turn ing adjustment of the disk 16 independent of its frictional engagement with the gear wheel 14;
The cable 21 passes to and around a sheave 22 mounted on the upper part of the supporting frame 9, and from thence over and around other guide sheaves to the hereinafter described setting mechanism of the present improvement.
In bearings on the supporting frame 9 and adjacent to the tubular valve stem 8, a shaft 23 has vertical movement, with its upper end connected to a pull connection, preferably a cable 24 which extends over and between suitable guide sheaves 25 to an operating handle 26 located Within c011- venient reach of and for operation by a dairyman or other person'that is to receive an allotted amount of the fluid contents of the storage tank 1. Midway its vertical hei htthe shaft 23-is provided with a lateral bearing plate or flange 27 adapted for operative contact. with the operating stud 20 of the controller disk 16 aforesaid. The bearing plate 27 is of greater hei ht than the normal vertical movement of t e shaft 23 in order that in the vertical movement of the shaft and its bearing plate 27, said bearing plate will continue in operative contact with the aforesaid operating stud 20. Active 0 erative contact of the stud 20 with the bearing plate 27 to hold the same in the retracted position, shown in full lines in Fig. 3, against the pulling stress of a spring 28, will prevail during the period in which the controlling mechanism is at its startin or zero oint of indication, with the stu 20 in ho ding engagement against the bearing plate 27.
Adjacent to the bearing plate 27, and usually forming a part thereof, an oppositely extending toe 29 is fixedly attached to the shaft 23, and adapted in one position of the timing mechanism parts, to engage beneath a circular collar 30 on the valve stem 5 aforesaid to effect an operative connection between the vertical shaft 23 and the valve stem-5, so that the outlet valve 4 may be raised to an open condition by a manipulation of the handle 26 and cable 24,
on the part of the person who is to receive the allotted quantity of fluid from the storage tank 1 in order that such person must maintain the valve raising mechanism in the described position during the delivery of the allotted amount of liquid. The described operative engagement between the shaft 23 and valve stem 5, automatically takes place when the controlling mechanism is set for an allotted delivery of fluid from the storage tank, in which case the operating stud 20, has been moved out of the described holding engagement with the bearing plate 27, so that the sprin 28 is free to turn the parts so that the toe 29, will be in lifting engagement with the collar 30 on the stem of the outlet valve 4.
With gradual return of the controlling dial 16, to the zero point of indication, the operating stud 20 returns to an operative engagementwith the bearing plate 27, to
turn the same and break the operative connection between the shaft 23 and the stem of the outlet valve 4', so that no further manual operation of said valve and delivery of fluid can be elfectcd until after a fresh setting of the controlling u'iechanism is made.
The setting means or mechanism, pre ferably comprises a revoluble adjusting means attached to the operating cable 21 of the controlling mechanism heretofore described. and having a detail construction as follows:
An enclosing casing 31, adapted for fixed attachment to the oflice wall of a. cheese factory or the like, is provided on an outer face with a circular scale or marking 32 and centrally thereof with bearings for a rcvolublc carrying shaft 33, of the setting mechanism.
At one end of the shaft 33, and at the ex terior of the casing 31 a hand or pointer 34.- is secured in indicating relation to the scale or markings 32 aforesaid, to afford an accurate indication of the extent of adjustment made and required.
Within the casing 31, a disk or wheel 35 is fixedly secured to the shaft 33 as shown in Fig. 6, so as to turn in unison with the hand or pointer 34 as the same is adjusted by a person in charge to the desired or allotted measurement. The disk or wheel 35 is a counterpart in size and formation of the controlling disk 16 aforesaid, and has operative engagement therewith by the cable 22 aforesaid, by attachment to the terminal or end of the cable opposite to the cable end that has the before described attachment to the controlling disk or wheel 16, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6, and with such cable terminal or end fitting and secured in a peripheral groove in the disk 35, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The arrangement and connection of parts is such that a turning movement of the hand or pointer 34 and associated wheel 35 to the right, or in a llii clockwise direction, will impart corresponding turning movement of the cont-rolling disk 16 in a like direction, so that when the hand or pointer 34; is set by hand to a predetermined allotment of fluid to be released, the operating stud of the controlling disk it? will be moved a corresponding distance away from the trip plate 27, to enable the outflow ot' the allotted amount of fluid, before said stud by a contra-clockwise move ment operates the trip plate to release the outlet alve 4, and prevent further manual opening oi the valve. In the gradual return movement of the operating stud 20, to- Wards the trip plate 27, a complementary return of the setting mechanism to its starting or zero point is effected by the connect ing cable 22.
Having thus -lully described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an automatic fluid measuring apparatus of the type described, the combination of a storage tank and its outlet duct, a valve controlling said outlet duct, manual means for opening said valve, a rotary fluid motor arranged in said duct, a controlling means operatively connected to said motor, a separable connection forming a part of said manual means and adapted for alternate operative engagement With and disengagement from the aforesaid outlet duct valve, and an adjustable operative means carried by the controlling mechanism for controlling the movement of said separable connection.
2. In an automatic fluid measuring apparatus of the type described, the combination of a storage tank and its outlet duct, a valve controlling said duct and having a vertically arranged tubular stem, a rotary fluid motor arranged in said duct beneath said valve and having a motor shaft extending up through said tubular valve stem, a control.- ling mechanism operatively connected to the upper end of said motor shaft, a disk adjustably attached to said controlling mechanism and having an eccentrically arranged ope ating stud, manual means for opening said valve, and a separable connection between said manual means and said valve stem arranged in the path of the stud aforesaid for operation thereby.
3. In an automatic fluid measuring apparatus of the type described, the combination of a storage tank and its outlet duct, a valve controlling said duct and having a vertically arranged tubular stein, a collar fixed on said valve stem, a rotary fluid motor arranged in said duct beneath said. valve and having a motor shaft extending up through said tubular valve stem, a controlling mechanism operatively connected to the upper end 01' said motor shaft, a disk adjustably attached to said controlling mechanism and having an cccentrically arranged operating stud, manual means for opening said valve, and a separable connection betvveen said manual means and said valve stem, and comprising a. vertically movable shaft attached to said manual means and provided With a lateral operating flange arranged in the path of the aforesaid operating stud and an oppositely extending toe adapted for operative engagement beneath a collar of the valve stem.
Signed at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, this th day of January 1926.
