the bracket 14 by a pin 16 and meshing with a pinion 17 fixed on the shaft 11. Formed on the segment 15, is an arm 18 which is connected to the driving means for imparting a rocking'movement to thc gear segment.
The driving means for actuating the segment comprises a shatt 19 journaled on a bracket 20 and having tiXed thereon a crank 21 adapted for continuous rotation in one direction. The shaft 19 may be driven by the same motor which drives the stencil feeding and printing mechanism, not shown. Connected to the crank 2 is a link 22 which extends downwardly through an opening 23 inthe table 1. Mounted on the lower part of the link 22, is a lixed collar 24 and a movable collar 25. when the link 22 moves downwardly, a vari- Vable movement is imparted to the gear mechanism and platen through the spring26.
In operatiom'the stencils 3 are ted in a step-by-step movement along the guideway 2 so as to bring the stencils successively into rinting position below the impression memlier i4. When the stencil reaches printing position, the inking member 4 moves downwardly to'engage the upper face of the stenfcil and the platen 7 is urged upwardly under the action of the cam 13 to raise the top envelope into position to receive the impression'. When the platen 7 has been moved upwardly a sutticient distance to bring the top envelope into irm contact with the stencil,the pressure on top of the platen counterbalances the action of the spring 2G so that .the gears 15 and 17 and cam 13 stop rotating. The link 22 may then continue tothe limit of its down stroke without further moving the platen.
`lVith this improved construction and arrangement of parts, a variable movement is imparted to the platen to accommodate envelopes ot different thicknesses so that the gnpressions are always uniform, irrespective Aof the numberof envelopes or'sheets su pjorted between the platen and the stencil. The platen is positively supported at every position in its stroke so as to be secured against any yielding action during the printing action.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described. it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
We claim:

5. A device of the class described con'iprising a mo fable platen, a cam for supporting said platen, driving means for moving said cam to actuate said platen, and a yielding connection between said driving means and cam.
6. A device of the class described comprising a movable platen. a rotary cam for supporting said platen, mechanism 'for rotating said cam to actuate said platen, driving means for said mechanism, and a yielding connection between said driving means and mechanism.
7. A device ot the class described comprising a movable platen, a rotary cam arranged to support said platen, gear mechanism 'for rotating said cam to more said platen in one direction. driving means tor said gear mechanism, and a resilient connection bctween said driving means and mechanism.

In a printing device, the combination with an impression member, ot a platen movable toward and away trom said member, a rotary cam arranged to support said platen, gear mechanism tor rotating said cam to move said platen in one direction, and driving means providing :i variable movement for said mechanism.
