UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TABLE.
Application fed February 2, 1925.
This invention relates to a means for pivotally connecting and clamping the legs of a foldable table to the frame of the table top in a manner ena-bling the legs to fold up withinl the sides of the frame when not required for use.
In tables of this class the legs are commonly connected together in pairs and are eX- tended and secured in the extended position by struts or braces of various kinds. The result is not altogether satisfactory in that the table is usually shaky on its legs and withal the braces are liable to catch depend ing portions of a. ladys dress.
In the device which is the subject of this application, the complication of braces is avoided by pivotally connectingl each leg separately to the frame of the table top and providing a means for clamping each leg to prevent movement on its pivot.
The device is fully set forth in the following specification7 reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
F ig. l is an edge view of the leg pivot and clamp.
Fig. 2 is a` perspective view of the same, showing its relation to the table frame and legs, and
Fig. 3 an inverted plan of the table top with the legs folded within the frame.
.In these drawings 2 and 3 represents adjacent sides of the top frame of the 'table which sides are rebated at 4 along their upper inner edges to receive the top 5 of the table.
These frame members 9.,i 3 may be connected together in any convenient way and in each corner a leg holding clamp 6, 7, 8 is secured by screws through 6 to the frame member 3 and through 7 to the member 2.
The third member 8 of the clamp is flexible in its connection to 7, preferably on a hinge t), and a bolt l0, the head of which is re essed into the frame to which 6 is secured, passes through the end of the leg ll and through the hinged member 8 of the clamp, outside which it is-furnished with a wing nut l2 by which the member 8 may Serial No. 6,437.
clamp the leg tightly between 6 and 8. The end corners of the leg may be rounded to enable it to clear the table top and the end T of the clamp, when being turned up or down, and the pivot hole in the ll so placed in relation to the end 7 of the clamp that the downward movement of the leg may be checked in the right angled position against that end. Y
Fig. 3 shows the disposition of the legs in relation to the frame of the 'table top so that a clamp may be applied in each corner of the frame and being securely screwed to the adjacent members and 23 of the frame the frame strongly reinforced thereby.
It will be noted that if clamping nut l2 is tightened on the legs when the legs are in the closed position they will be prevented from falling out of place when the table is being moved.
A simple and effective means is thus provided for pivotally connecting the legs of the table to the frame of the top whereby thev are strongly connected thereto and may be separately folded within that frame. Further, the legs may be securely clamped in either the extended or the folded position and form a strong and steady support.
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in bv Letters Patent, is: l
A means for connecting the legs of a table to the frame of the top, said means comprising the combination with the frame of the top, of a sheet metal clamp fitting each corner of the frame and secured to each of the sides which form the corner, said clamp having a. member hinge-connected to one of the lined members to be parallel with the other, a pin extending through the fixed and the hinged member of the clamp on which pin the end of a leg` is mounted between the sides of the clamp.A and a nut on the bolt bv which the sides of the clamp may be tight? ened on the leg.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
WILLIAM H. HARVEY.
