y SPOTLIGHT.
`Application.. led "J'anuary This invention relates to a spotlight or auxiliaryheadlight for-motor vehlcles and the like and has for its object to provide for a foot operated andcontrolled light,
movable both in a horizontal and a verticalV plane, whereby rmaximum illumination his obtained for night driving.
One of the objects of our invention'isto construct.' and mount an Aauxiliary light,
preferably yat-theY lower, left' hand cornero'f the radiator of a motorvehicle at a point below the Anormal linel of visionpincluding foot controlled mechanism lfor shiftingthe light in a pluralityoffpositions in a hori zontal vplane so thatfthe Ioperator of the" ma-V chine-may guard against the side ofthe yroad the traffic moving in the opposite as well as direction. Y
Another object of our invention is to prokvide a headlight of the above character and description, which may beladjusted in avvertical plane so thatftheoperator. may project the light at any vdesired-.distance in advance oi? the machine, yet permitting free .v vwheel without removing the hands orfde-V tract from the proper driving of .thevehicley To enable others skilled in the art to fully in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexedgas a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding partsthroughout all the views, ofwhich, j `l Y Figure 1 is a side view showing'the Spotlight or headlight mounted at the front of the machine. n
Figure 2 is a plan, showing the different lateral positions of the light.
FigureB is anenlarged Side view of .the
15 bracket, the supporting casting being shown in section. .n Y fr *f Figure 4 is a sectional ViewV taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3. Figure 5 is a front view of4 the rocker pedal.
Figure 6 is a sectional line 6--6V of Figure 5. y
` Referring now to the `drawings wherein like `reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.`
2av lateral: movement or movement from the left tothe right from a positionv at the steeringv view takenV on thev 22,1925. semina. 4,104.` A
5 designates thekvfront ofthe conventional type of motor vehicle'and 6 the dash and instrumentboard. Mounted" atV the front of the radiator rand Vpreferably to the lower, leftfhand side thereof is anattaching plate 7 havingfapertures 8,9, fat theftop and qbottom for f' the reception for" screws or otherfastening elements whereby the plate may bepermanently secured to't-heradiator. The 7, plate* supports f a `fcasting designated ln'itsentiretyby numeral 10 havng'a lla-red, outer flange 11 k'for engagement withthe plate 7 above-referred to. vThe cast-ing 10 is for thefmost part' hollow soi` as to 'reduce its weight, 'ha`ving a head 12'subs`tantiall'y squarey in cross. section.v The head is split as indicated at 13 andv isfurther provided( f with a threaded screw 14t'ap`ped therein'so as to properly" confine 'the quently to be referred to.` j
Referring particularly'toFigures 3 land 4, it lwill be observed that there is k'provided longitudinal slot ,or groove 15 lin one tsidek 1 of thev head, said groovecommunicating with a machined or milled yout chamber'orh'ousving 1G for receiving the bracket and spindle Aof tlhe `spotlightfor f lamp proper. lVithin the Vgroovefor'*slot 15i is av rack 1.17 and rod 18' attached thereto, said frodreceiving a coil gearing `Subselspring 119.' One endfoffthe spring ybears against the ,rack 17 and' the "opposite end of the Springfagainst'a threadedscrew 20, threadedin the side of thecjasting Acable- 21 within a cable housing 22 is connected to the rod 18, said cable extending rearwardly through a door plate 23 and attached to the bottom and preferably to the right side orn a Y rocker pedalk 24 as by a-screw25 orA other fastening means. A roclrerpedal is formed with vertical extensions 26 which straddles the flange 27 of the floor plate 28 and pivoted theretoas at 28 so that the operator may roclrthe rocker pedal to actuate the rack bar 17 for the purposey subsequently vto kbe referred to.`
1 The rackbarf17 meshes with a'pinionB() keyed on a short'vertical shaft 31 extending withinthe head 12.` Acollar to the; shaft so as to retain the pinion in proper position. A screw head 33 is fastened Lto the lower end-:of the Shaft 31 be` tween the screw head and collar,.ball bearings 34 are provided in a raceway and additional ball bearings rbetween the pinion and a top plate' permitting free rotation kof I32 is fastenedA 4 the shaft 31 in a horizontal plane When actuated by the rack bar 17 When the rocker pedal is depressed toward the left, for instance.
The upper end ot the shaft 31 supports thebraclret 37, fastened theretofby an adjusting nut bolt 38 whereby the socket 39 rand lamp shade i0 may be adjusted vertically.
kThe cables or leads from .the `socket 39 are provided and connected to a suitable source p ot current such as a battery La.
Under normal conditions, tension on the spring 18 will force the rack bar 17 olit- Wardly so vthat the lamp shade and lamp 40 will be turned toward the right side-ot the machine. It pressure, therefore, is exerted on, the rocker pedal so as to actuate it 4and horizontal `:position as shown by Figure 5A and the lamp shade 40 will be directed ytoward the right .of the machine and to the sideof the roadway. The entire device and particularly the lamp shade 40 is ymounted at a point below the normal line of vision of the operator so as -to not to interfere with the gregular headlights of thefniachine. rlhe operator may actuate the headlight by the 'foot Without removing his hands from Ithe steering Wheel, which is very important in careful driving. 1
lVhile We have illustrated and described our invention With some degree of2 particularity, -We reali-ze that in practice va-k rions alterations therein maybe made. /Ve therefore reserve the right and privilege ot' changing the l:torni of the details of constructionk lor lotherwise altering the .arrangement of the correlated parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new and desire to secure by Uni-ted `States Letters Patent visz-- 1. A spotlight for motor vehicles and the like comprising a lamp supporting bracket, .a vertical shaft, a horizontal pivot supporting the bracket on said shaft, a casting, means -forattaching said casting tothe front oit a motor vehicle, -a pinion located on the lower end lot theshaft `and located Within the said casting, aV spring controlled rack vbar meshing with the pinion and -slidable in said feasting, a cable connected to said rack bar, a rocker pedal tor actuating `said cable and gearing whereby the lamp supporting bracket is rotated in a horizontal plane, and means for adjusting the rack bar rela-tively to said pinion 'to take up Wear.
Q. A spotlight for motor vehicles and the like comprising a lamp supporting bracket, ak shaft, a horizontalconnecting pivot vfor said bracket and shaft, a hollow casting, means ior attaching said casting to the front ot' a ,motor vehicle, a pinion vand lball bear,- ings located Within the casting on the ,flower end of the shaft, a longitudinalgroove Within the cas ting,l `means for closing said groove, a rack bar ivithinsaidgroovea spring associated therewith tor normally retracting said bar, lsaid vbar meshing with the pinion, a, 4rocker pedal and a cable connecting the said rack `bar with the `rocker pedal, a threaded member tor Adrawing the yparts of 'the Vcast-ing together whereby the rack andthe pinion may be adjusted relatively 1to each other. y
ln testimony whereof We raffix `our signatures.
