FLYING MACHINE.
Application filed March 5, 1926. Serial No. 92,600.
inner cylinder and the outer cylinder being filled with lighter than air gas, the effective plane area being equal to the outer cylinder diameter by the length plus the inner cylinder diameter by the length, the motor for revolving the cylinder is attached to the center cylinder shaft by which it is supported, in a position between two revolving. cylinders, both of similar construction as described above with a suspended construction between and beneath for operating the motor, manipulating the horizontal plane to ascend or descend and the vertical plane to turn to" the right or to the left, and to carry stores and material. The drive from motor to cylinders is shown with shafts and gears, but these may be chain or rope drives,-electric or other method that may be selected and the proportional space for gas may be much larger. The spirals shown on each cylinder are double helical which may be increased to any number.
In attaining the foregoing objects and certain additional advantages to be below disclosed, I have provided the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of the cylinder with outside spirals, the horizontal plane slightly inclined, the vertical plane and the suspended construction with ground supporting wheels.-
-Figure 2 is a plan view of the machine with two cylinders, shafts extended to suport the structure carrying the motor, the orizontal plane, the vertical plane and the structure for the operator.-
Figure 3 is an end elevation of two cylinders with motor, and shaft connections to structure suspended for operators and ground wheel supports and showing direction of rotation of cylinders.
Referring to the drawings the cylinders are each made of two concentric parts as 5 the inner cylinder and 6 the outer cylinder with the space 7 between them and held in position with reference to each other by the separator 8 and the closed ends 9 and 10. Each cylinder is attached to the center shafts 11 by the propellers 12 and 13 on each end and l t at their centers, and each cylinder is provided with a spiral or double helical vane extended around and the length of the outer part as 14 and 15, to propel it through the air in flight. The extended ends of shafts 11 are provided with bearings 16 and 17 on the ends of extension supports 18 and 19 to which are attached motor support 20, the drive shaft bearings 21 and 22 and the suspended supports 23 and 2a. The motor is operatively connected to the cylinders through the shaft 25 with bevel gears and supported by the extended support 20. The cross supports 26 attached to the ends of supports 23 and 24 together with the longitudinal supports 27 form a space for an operator and stairs etc. The wheels 28 and 29 support the machine on the ground. The horizontal rud-. der 30 and the vertical rudder 31 are supported on hinges and provided with levers may be divided longitudinally into compartments. The space for operator may be located above the cylinders. The transmission connections from power motor to cylinder shafts may be increased to provide a high cylinder speed from a slower speed motor.
