Application filed April 9,
This invention relates to ash trays or'ash receivers for cigars and cigarettes and one of the objects o i the invention isthe provision of an ash receptacle having means .fi whereby the ashe" andxembcrs of the cigar or cigarette maybe positively knocked oli'of the cigar or cigarette when desired so that when thecigar or cigarette is placed within the ash tray, it will not continue to smoke and smoulder.
A further object is to provide an ashreceptacle of this character having a toothed wheel and a. plunger operating the same, the toothed wheel being disposed within the receptacle and the receptacle having an opening through which the cigarette might be inserted into contact with the wheel.
A further object is to provide an ash receptacle of this character having a removable drawer from-which the cigarettes and cigars deposited into the receptacle may be withdrawn and having means for supporting a package of cigarettes and a match box.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 'is a perspective view of an ash tray and cigarette holder constructed in accordance with myinvention. v
Figure 2 is a rear elevationthereof, part broken away. i i
Figure 3 is alongitudinal vertical sectional view thereof.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section.
Figure 5 is a detailed view of end of the plunger.
Referring to thesedrawings, 1O designates a rectangular receptacle of any suitable the lower character having a drawer 11 in one end and above this drawer, the top 12 is formed with a slot- 1-3 through which cigar, cigarette, and pipezashes maybe dumped into the drawer. Disposed to the rear of the receptacle are the opposing walls 14 which define three sides of a rectangle,,these walls being desigsigned to receive between them and to embrace a package of cigarettes A. At the open end of this rectangular figure there is a vertically extending wall 15 which is spaced from the ends of the walls 14 and thisv thin wall 15 is adapted to be inserted between the cover and. thebody of a match box so as to support the match box B as shown in Figure g Disposed within the hollow interior of the ash receptacle is a toothed wheel 16 which is mounted uponany suitable'bearing 17 sup- 'tacle and projects somewhat above the same.
smoulder the end is inserted in the opening 1927. Serial No. 182,482.
ported in the brackets 18 which may be soldered or otherwise connected to the metal otwhich the box 10 is composed, or maybe attached in any other way to the box in case the box is made of wood or any other i'u'atc rial than metal. As illustrated there arc-two of these brackets 18, each provided with an arm 19 extending forward, toward the partition ZO'and this arm is provided i-v-i'th a bearing for the shaft- 17. Each of the upright portions of thebracket 18 is formed with an inwardly extending flange 21 forming a guide for the plunger whereby the toothed wheel is operated. The top of the receptacle 12 is formed immediately above the toothed wheel 16 with an opening 22 having' an upstanding wall. This opening is of such size as to permit the lighted end of a cigar or cigarette to be inserted through the opening and into. contact with the wheel. Operatively engaging the'wheel to rotate it or oscillate it is a plunger 23 which extends out from an opening in the, top of the recep- This plunger has at its lower end a rear-' wardly PIOJQCtlDg linger 24, and a coiled contractile spring 25 is attached to this finger and to the top ofthis box so as to urge the plunger upward as shown in Figure 3. The plunger is formed with longitudinally extending grooves 26. on the side faces into which the flanges 21 extend. The plunger is also formed with teeth 27 to engage the toothed wheel 16 to causeit to rotate; The
' rear face of the box is provided with a door 28 whereby the ashes knocked from the (.lg11'. vette 'or cigar bv the toothed wheel may be discharged. It will be obvious that the drawer 11 might have a portion extending beneath the toothed wheel to collect the ashes. It is also obvious that many slight changes might be made in the details of construction and arrangements of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims. Preferably the receptacle and the various parts thereofmay be made of metal. though I do not wish to be limited to this. In the use of this device, the ordinary ash from a cigar or cigarette may be dropped through the slot 13 but if it be desired to extinguish the cigar or cigarette so that it will not 22 and the plunger is depressed which causes the toothed wheel to abrade the smoking end of the cigar or cigarette. The remainder may then be disposed in the drawer ll through the slot 13 without being offensive.
I claim 1. An ash receptacle including a rectangular casing, a drawer in the forward portion of the casing, the top of the receptacle having a slot whereby cigarettes or cigars may be deposited in said drawer, the top also having an opening rearward of the receptacle, a
toothedwheel mounted at the end of the re ceptacle below the'opening and with which cigars or cigarettes may be brought into contact by insertion tln'ough the opening, and manually operable means for oscillating said wheel.
2. An ash receptacle including a rectanguceptacle below the opening and with which cigars or cigarettes may be brought into contact by insertion through the opening, and manually operable means for oscillating said wheel, the rear of the receptacle being formed to receive ashes discharged by said toothed wheel and carrying a cigarette holder and a match box holder. 7
3. An ash receptacleincluding a casing having a top formed with an opening to receive the end of a cigarette or cigar, a toothed wheel disposed immediately beneath said opening, the axis of the wheel intersecting approximately the axis of said opening and the plane of said wheel being disposed in the axial plane of said opening, the wheel having its teeth operating in a path closely adjacent the opening, and means for manually rotating said wheel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atllx my signature.
