MUFFLER.
Application flled September 18, 1925. Serial No. 57,154.
It is the object of the invention to provide a muffier particularly for` .usein automobile engines which willl be of simple, sturdy construction, capable of being easily assembled and manufactured, and at the same time'efficient in dissipating the energy of the discharged gases. l
In the preferred design but a single path is provided for the passage of the combustion products in their travel through the muflier. Specifically,'the n'iufler preferably comprises a casing divided into a plurality of superposed chambers, the exhaust gases passing successively from one Chamber to the other in a tortuous path and in so doing giving up a large proportion of their energy prior to discharge. These chambers may, if desired,'be of increasing capacity, and expansionchambers may be provided at the entrance end and at the discharge end of the muflier for further assisting 'in the dissipation of the energy of the gases.
In the mufiier which embodies the general features of design above indicated, I have embodied a number of novel details of'construction and these, as well as the broad features of -novelty previously pointed out, Will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and covered by the appended claims.
` In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through my improved muflier taken on line 1+1 of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figura 1' an ,Figura 3 is a section on line 3-'-3 of Fig- 'ure' 1.
The reference character 2 indicates a tubular casing which may be. of any preferred cross sectional shape. I have shown it ascylindrical. In the casing and adjacent the ends thereof are mounted headsvnumbered 4 and 6', respeetively.,- These heads are provided with inwardly projecting bosses 8 and 10, upon which is 'telescopically received a flattenedtubular member 12, the bosses 8 and 1f" conforming in shape to lthe cross section 01 the member 12. The tubular member 12 divides the casing into a lower chamber 13,
an intermediate chamber 15, constituted by the interior of the member 12 and an upper chamber 117. The sides 14 and 16 of the bosses 8 and 10, respectively, which lie adjacent the casing 2, are preferably rovided with pressed in channel portions 1 and 19 'tures 38 into expansion Chamber' 27 Which theyi'are discharged into the atmosvto receive' an inturned seam 20 'uniting the meeting edges of the 7tubular member 12.
.By this construction 'the seam is confined between the casing 2 and the bosses and separat-ion at the seam is prev'ented.
At the extreme ends of the casing2 are providedheads 22 and V24 forming with lthe heads 4 and 6 and the casing member 2 eX- pansion chambers 26 and 27. The head 22 has an integral extension 28 to which the conduitleading from the engine is ad'apted to be connected. The head 24 has a discharge pipe 30 connected to it as shown, preferably by welding.
The exhaust gasesv enter the expansion 'relation with the apertures 34 to cause the gases to follow a tortuous path described. Travelling the length of the upper chamber 117 the gases are discharged throughv afperphere through conduit 30. Inl their travel through the casing the energy of the /gases is effectively dissipated.v
The manner of assembly of the 'parts forming the mufiler 'is apparent from an in- -spection of the drawing. The parts may also be secured together in any preferred manner. I have preferred to weld the heads to the casing member 2 and 'I have also resorted to Welding to secure the member 12 to the bosses 8 and 10.
While in the specification and claims I have referred to certain of the chambers as being'upper and: lower chambers it'is to be understood that the designation is relative only and that themuflier maybe usedfin reversed position if desired.1 i
I claim: f x
1. In a mulfler, the combination' of a tubular casing having spaced heads, a tubular member extending between said heads and dividing the casing' into lower, intermediate, and upper chambers, the intermediate chamher being constituted by the interior of the 75 from the 'upper chamber, the tubular mem' ber being provided with staggered apertures for .'placing said upper and lower chambers' in communication with said intermediatechamber to cause the' gases to'follow' a tor-' tuous path in passing through-the ,mufliel'x 2. A muflier asdefined by cl'aim 1, the
heads being provided With inwardly projecting portions cooperating with the tubular'me'mberl to hold it in-proper position.
heads iin the casing`,beyond-the first named` heads and forming expansion chambers therewith, one in communication with the lower Chamber and-the other in communica-` tion withv the upper Chamber, van exhaust conduit connecting the engine with the first named expansion chamber and a dischar'ge Uconduit leading from the `pansionchamber. p z
4. In'a muflier, the' combination of a tubularv casing having spaced heads, a flattened tubular member extending between said .heads and dividing thecasing into lower, intermediate, and upper chambers,`the interper chambers successively in a tortuous path 'prior their discharge intofthe atmosphere,
.flttened 'tubular member second' named ex-` mediate chambertbemg constituted by the' cross 'section' of the flattened tubular member, thelatt'er being. telescoped thereupon. z 5. A muflier as definedb claim 4, said being'4 provided with an inturned seam, parts of said inwardly pressed ortions of the heads adjacent the casingi wafi 'being'provided with channels for 'receiving the' intrned seam.. w e
6. The combination as defined in'clairn 4, said 'casing being`` extended beyond the said heads, caps .for closin'g the endsof the casin to form expansion chambers between lsaid heads and said caps, means for admitting exhaust gases 'to one ofl said expansion said heads being' provided with -inwardly i pressed portions conforming' in shape to thechamb'ers,` andmeans' .for discharging exhaust gases from the other chamber. i 7. In 'a mufler, the combinationrof a tubular icasing having spaced 'heads, a tubular i' member -extending between said heads and having 'wall portions'fitting opposite sides of 'the casing to divide the casing into lower, w
intermediate, and upper w chambers, said .tubular member having an inturned seam, 'said 'headsbeing provided' with inwardly pressed 'bosses conforming in shape to the cross section. of said tubular member and upon which the Iatter is telescoped, said bosses being provided with channels` for re- 'ceivino' the said seam, said channels being' forme in the portions of the bosses -whichi contact with the said wall portions. In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
