This invention relates to sockets and bases for translating devices, and particularly to thoseadapted for use with replaceable trans- 3 lating devices having a so-called valve I action.
The object of the invention generally is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of arts which is eflicient, economical and rea ily manufactured.
More specifically an object of the invention is to provide a socket and base whereby translating devices such as asymmetric cells of the dry surface-contact variet may be easily inserted and withdrawn rom elec- 18 trical systems using the same without impairing its contact connections therewith or otherwise interfering with the operating characteristics ofthe devices.
Other objects of the invention will be in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in, the constructions hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims,
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following'detailed description taken in connection wlth the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing a side elevation of a typical translating device having asymmetric cells of the dry surface-contact variety provided with a base in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view showing in elevation a translating device of the character specified removed r view being taken at right angles to that of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section and partly in plan, arrangedtoshow the adaptation of the base device so as to. fit the socket in accordance with'the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the socket with the translating device removed.
Referring now particularly to thedrawing, 10 denotes a translating device, shown by way of example as having a plurality of asymmetric couples 11 of the dry surface contact variet such as disclosed in the copending application for Letters Patent of om its socket, the plane of the the United States'filed by Samuel Ruben on November 18, 1924, Serial No. 750,939. The couples thus provided are arranged to have a so-called valve or rectifying action and are preferably disposed symmetrically on each side of a central conducting plate 12; the nut and bolt, shown ate-13, serving to retain the couples properly in place. The symmetrical arrangement here illustrated-is adapted to utilize both halves of the alternating current; butwhile the arrangement is convenient, it is by no means essential to the practice of the present invention. In this arrangement, conducting end plates 14 are applied to the device which have the same polarity but is the opposite of that of plate 12. These end plates areconveniently extended as indicated at 15 and have upset portions 16 which are adapted to support the device as a unit upon the insulating disc 17, the latter serving as the base proper for the rectifying unit here provided. The conducting portions 16 thus secured to the base 17 are adapted to be connected to one terminal of the direct current circuit, since they have the same polarity.
To this end the contacting portions 16 have extensions 18 which extend beyond the base to engage with the socket in the manner hereinafter described.
The insulating base, as indicated in-Figs. 1 and 2, is adapted to be removably disposed in a socket 30, and when inserted, to a make the necessary contacts with the conductorsof the electrical system to which it is applied. The base 17 is accordingly provided with additional contact elements connected to the various portions of the rectifying device. In ac cordance with this provision, thebase is shown in Fig. 2 as havin three depending contact elements'2'1, 22 an 23, which project through the base 17, but
' are cut short on the upper side. They may be made in tubular form or otherwise provided with countersunk openings as indicated at '24 (see Fig.- 3), as this feature facilitates the insertion of the conductors 25, 26 and 27 g which are provided to make contact with the elements of the asymmetric couples 11. For example the conductors 25 '8.Ild. 27 are secured respectively in contact elements 21 and 23 andare connectedto'in- 'termediate points in the group of a metric couples which are at o posite s des of the central plate 12, while t e conductor 26, which leads-from the plate 12, makes contact with the middle contact element 22,
A. rectifying unit provided with a base as shown at 17 in Fig. 2, is adapted to be removably supported in a socket which has conducting means disposed to engage in bayonet fashion with the projections 18. This is conveniently accomplished by the arrangement here shown, where a conducting collar 30 is mounted on an insulating plaque of other suitable support 31. The conducting collar, thus provided, has upstanding lugs 32 formed with slots on opposite sides into which the projections 18 may be slid for bayonet engagement with theconducting collar 30 by a partial rotation.
The collar 30 is arranged to be conduc tively connected with the conducting terminal clip 33 disposed on the underside of the insulating plaque 31. It is adapted to provide a suitable terminal through which the direct current circuit is connected to the translating device. In order to provide similar terminals for the other circuit, connections, the insulating plaque 31 supports additional contact members, preferably of the spring variety, which make suitable contact with the contact elements 21, 22 and 23. This may be conveniently accomplished without cutting away the whole of the insulating plaque 31 within the conducting collar 30, thereby providing a strong and convenient arrangement. Accordingly the insulating plaque 31 has a perforation 35 centrally disposed within the conducting collar'to accommodate the centrally disposed contact element 22 projecting from the base. Disposed under this perforation is a spring con* tact member 36 which has a terminal clip 37 adapted to serve as the other terminal of the direct current circuit. In like manner elongated perforations 38 are provided in the insulating plaque on diametrically opposite sides of the central perforation 35. These elongated perforations admit the insertion of the depending contact elements 21 and 23 to make contact respectively with the springcontact members 39 which have terminal clips 40 extending at opposite sides of the insulating plaque 31. are sufliciently elongated to permit the inserted contact elements 21 and 23 to turn through an arc of suflicient magnitude to permit the partial rotation of the rectifier unit to a position where the projections 18 clear the lugs 32 so that the rectifying unit 10 may be withdrawn or replaced.
By this invention, it will be seen, that a rectifying or like translating device ma be arranged in convenient units on a base w ich is adapted to be removably inserted in a socket where it makes contact with the conductors of circuits in an electrical system such as is employed in the rectification of.
The perforations 38 alternating currents. In such a system, for example, the clips 40 are adapted to serve as the alternating current input terminals, while the clips 33 and 37 are adapted to serve as the terminals for the direct current output circuit. I
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a socket havin a conducting collar provided with lugs or bayonet engagement, and having a plurality of contact terminals associated therewith, one of said terminals being electrically connected to said collar, an insulating base adapted to fit within said conducting collar and rovided with contacting elements disposed to engage respectively with the remaining contact terminals associated with said socket, conducting supporting members mounted on said base and provided with projections adapted to make bayonet engagement with the lugs on said conducting collar and thereby afiord electrical engagement for one terminal of an electric circuit, and a translating device having an asymmetric couple of the dry surface contact variety, said couple being operatively connected to said contacting elements.
2. In combination, a socket comprising an insulating plate and a conducting collar and having a plurality of contact terminals associated therewith, one of said terminals being electrically connected to said collar the remaining terminals being of the spring contact variety, an insulating base provided with projecting contact elements disposed to engage respectively with the spring contact terminals in said socket, conducting supporting members mounted on said base and adapted to make contact with said conducting collar, and a rectifying device of the dry surface contact variety supported on said base by said conducting supporting member and having operative electrical connections to said contacting elements, said base bein adapted to be removably secured in said socket and having one contacting element disposed to engage with said collar.
3.
