Application filed March 24., 1926. Serial No. 97,146.
The invention relates to a detachable sole and heel for footwear, such as boots, shoes, or the like.
The primary object of the invention, is the provision of a sole or heel structure, wherein either can be removably secured upon a boot, shoe, or the like, so that when the heel or sole becomes worn or unlit for further wear, a new sole or heel can be placed upon the footwear and the original sole orheel discarded, thus increasing the life of the footwear.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sole or heel structure of this character, wherein either is mounted upon the middle or welt sole of a shoe, boot, or the like, in a novel manner and will be secure, yet it can be readily removed when occasion requires, especially if such sole or heel becomes run down or worn to an extent as requiring the replacement by a new one, the sole or heel being attached or connected with a shoe, boot, or the like, in a unique manner, without requiring the stitching, nailing or otherwise like fastening of said sole or heel in place.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sole or heel structure of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install upon a shoe, boot, or the like.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is a plan view looking toward the bottom of the middle or welt sole of a shoe, boot, or the like, showing the fastener for the removable or detachable sole and heel, both the sole and heel being removed.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the middle or welt sole in place upon the boot, shoe, or the like.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the sole and heel mounted upon the boot, shoe, or the like.
Figure 4. is a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken approximately on the line i I of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detailed sectional View taken approximately on the line 5-5 ofFigure 3. v
Figure 6 is a fragmentaryview in section illustrating the heel of the shoe coupled in position.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a boot, shoe, or the like, having the middle or welt sole 10 which extends from the toe to the heel inclusive and is of the ordinary well known construction.
Adapted to span the bottom of the shoe, boot, or the like, at the toe portion and approximately at the ball, are members 11 and 12, respectively. The member 1.1 encircles the toe edge of the middle or welt sole 10 and throughout this encircling portion there is formed a flange 13 having an inturned edge portion 14 which constitutes a channel formed by it and the flange 13 to embrace the middle or welt sole 10. This member 11 is made from sheet metal, although the same may be made from any other suitable material.
The member 12 which is made from metal, although it may be made from other mate- I'ial,.is in the form of a plate having its ends bent at right angles thereto and the edges of said bent portions inturn, so as to correspond. with the portions 13 and 14: of the'member 11, whereby the said member 12 will engage the middle or welt sole 10 in a corresponding manner to the member 1.1. These members 11 and 12 are made fast to a sole 15, which extends to the arch or medial portion of the shoe, boot, or the like.
Suitably fastened crosswise of the bottom of the shoe, boot, or' the like, next to the arch or medial portion thereof is a plate 16, which has suitably buried. in the bottom of the shoe beneath it nuts 17, while adapted to be passed through the inner ends 18 of the sole are fasteners such as screws 19, each being designed to be threaded into its companion nut 17 and in this manner the inner end of the sole 15 is made fast upon the bottom of the shoe, boot, or the like.
The heel 20, which is of the ordinary well known construction is attached to the shoe, boot, or the like, by means of a plate 21, which is flanged at its outer marginal edge throughout the heel area. The flange of the plate 21 is of angle shaped cross section as indicated at 13, 14, so as to engage with the middle or welt sole-about the heel area of the shoe, boot, or the like. This plate 21 is extended, so as to underlie the inner end 18 of the sole and to be engaged by the screws 19 hereinbefoie specifically described. In this manner both the sole 15 and heel 20 are detachably and removab'ly fitted to the Welt 10 at the bottom of the shoe, boot, or the like.
VVhat is claimed is 1. A detachable solo and heel comprising means lot 're'i'novable engagement with a Welt sole "of footwear, a sole carried by said means, means for fastening the sole in place upon the 'W'elt sole, a heel, and means for detachably connecting the heel to said Welt sole and secured by said fastening means.
2. The combination with a foot covering having a. Welt sole, of members slidably en- 'gageahle with the Welt sole at the toe and ASTOR M. ANTARAMIAN. 5
