1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROY X. TUTTLE, BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
THERAPEUTIC LAMP.
Application filed February 5, 1927. Serial No. 166,175. I
.The mainobject of this invention is to provide an improved therapeutic lamp well invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of my improved lamp, one of the tubular radiating elements being shown in longitudinal section on line 11 of F ig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sect-ion through one unit of the lamp on a line correspond ing to line 22 of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of parts of the lamp illustrating structural details.
Fig. 4: is side elevation of one of the resistance cores with a portion of theresistance indicated thereon.
Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the tubular radiating elements.
Referring to the drawing I provide a base member 1, preferably a casting, having out wardly diverging arms 2. The threaded plug shell 3 is mounted on this base member. The central terminal 1 of the socket plug is extended into a shell 5. The arms have holes 6 therein in which the flanged insulating bushings 7 are arranged, insulating disks 7 being arranged on 'the under sides of the arms.
The posts 8 are threaded at each end and are provided with clamping nuts 9 and 10 at their lower ends engaging the inner and outer sides of the insulating material described whereby the posts are rapidly mount ed on the arms. The upper ends of the posts are connected by the cross piece 11 and the posts are threaded into this cross piece.
Loosely arranged on the posts are cores 12. Resistance coils 14 are wound upon the cores, the upper ends of these resistance coils being connected by the connecting wire 15 which is secured to the under side of the cross piece 11 at 16. The inner end 17 of one oi the coils is connected to the post 5 while the inner end 18 of the other coil is connected to the base by the binding screw 19. i
The tubular radiating elements 2U 'Wl1 ich are formed of what is commercially known as lava surround the coils to be heated to incandescence thereby. These tubes 20 have longitudinal slits 21 therein. The cores and the radiating elements are arranged onthe posts between the base and cross piece in non-clamping relation, that is, they are sufficiently loose to preventing breakage. The longitudinal slits also permit expansion and contraction without danger of breaking the radiating elements, which are formed of earthy material and consequently might be fractured; it they were rigidly clamped, although the longitudinal slits reduce the likelihood of fracture to a minimum. 2
My improved lamp is very economicalto produce, may be used with the desired reflector inan ordinary lamp socket and is highly eflicient.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: t I I 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a socket plug provided with a centrally disposed terminal post and 5 having outwardly diverging arms 'with openings therein,
