J. A. HILLERICH GOLF CLUB HEAD Filed Oct. 19, l925 WWQMWZ A] Patented Dec. 27, 1927 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JCJHN I-IILLERIGH, F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, AEISIGNOR 'lO HILLERICH & IElRAJJlSBY 00., 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY.
GOLF-GLUB HEAD.
Application filed October 19. 1925.
The invention relates to golf clubs, and more particularly to the head of such clubs, as drivers and the like, and has for its object primarily to improve the driving and larrying power of the club.
TTQI'EtOTOl'O various materials including ivory, have been inserted in the striking faces oft gol'l clubs, and my improvement is directed to this subject, with a view to lessening the cost of manufacture and im proving the elasticity and p1'o1:)elling power of the driving face of the club.
The invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set tlorth and claimed.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood there are shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into practical eliect, without li1niting the 'iniproyenients, in their useful applications, to the particular constructions which, tor the purpose of explanation, have been made the subject of illustration. In the said drawings Fig. l is a front view of the head Off a grill. driver, showing the striking face thereof containing my invention.
Fig. 2 a horizontal sectional View of the same on line .lITI of Fig. 1.
lligs. 3 and 4 are side and plan views 0t one of the inserts.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the head oi the club, ordinarily of a suitable strong wood. This head is formed in its :lront driving face with a recess r of suitable depth, say one-fourth of an inch and extending from the bottom to the top of the club. This recess is preferably longer at the bottom so that it tapers upwardly.
E is a retaining plate, which may be of fiber, hard rubber, or the like, which is adapted to lit neatly within said recess, in which it is secured by screws C as illus trated, these screws extending Well into the body of the head.
Serial No. 63,507.
1) indicates one of the inserts made of relatively hard and elastic material. such as ivory or the like. The insert is of out wardly tapering form, so that its inner face d which rests against the face a of the reso cess is wider and larger than the external striking face (5.
The retaining plate B is formed with an aperture Z) of corresponding shape, so that when the insert placed in said aperture and the retaining plate is secured in said recess r against the face as ol. the head the insert is very lirinly held and cannot by any possibility escape. I
It will be understood that I may employ as many of said inserts as necessary or desir-able, and arrange them in any suitable manner, for instance as illustrated in the drawing, in which live 01' said inserts are shown.
The conical form of the insert strengthens it very much for driving purposes, so that it is not likely to split or to chip oil at its outer corner.
What I claim is:
1. A gol't club head having a portion of its striking :t'ace formed by the outer and smaller ends oil hard and elastic trusteconicul bodies, in combination with said bodies, and means separate from said bodies for engaging the sloping sides of said bodies and holding their wider ends in place against the body of the head.
2. A goli' club head having its front striking lacc recessed, hard and elastic frustoconical bodies arranged with their larger bases against the wall of said recess, a retaining plate separate from said bodies having apertures of lrusto-conical shape and arranged so as to receive and retain said 35 bodies in place, and means for securing said plate against the face of the head of the club In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
JOHN A. HILLERICH.
