My invention has tor its objectto provide a bed lamp and light shieldwhich is so constructed that the light from the lamp may be confined to a definite tan shaped region or none that extends crosswise of the bed when the lamp is supported on the head of the bed and shield the eyes of a person lying in the bed. The invention thus provides a bed lamp whose light is exceedingly restful to the eyes oi the user. The invention also provides means whereby the lamp, and consequently the zone of the light, may be read ily adjusted.
The invention has tor its further object to provide a trams that may be decoratively covered by suitable fabricated sheet material and provides means whereby the bulb may be located in a con tralposition with retcrence to the lamp and may be readily cured in this position. The invention has also for its object other advantages and teatures which will appear from the tollowing description and upon examination of the drawings.
The invention may be contained. in lamps of different forms and used for ditlerent purposes and to illustrate a practical application of the iitivention, I have selected a bed lamp as an example of the structures that embody the invention, and shall describe ithereinafter. The structure selected for pur' poses of illust *ation is shown in the accompanying drawing.

In the particular form of construction selected as an example, and shown in the drawing, the bed lamp is provided. with a frame 1 that is substantially cylindrical in form, that is, it may be hexagonal or octagonal or similar geometric shape to form an en closure for containing an electric light bulb, which, however, may be provided with walls out suitable fabricated material which is sufiiciently remote from the bulb to constitute a reflector of the light and also, where the fabricated material is more or less of inflammable character, it is located sutliciently remote from the bulb to prevent scorching or ignition.
The frame 1 is preferably formed of a pluralityof bars 2 that are joined at their ends by suitable rings 3 in order to dispose the bars 2 111 parallel and spaced relation. The rings 3 may be made hexagonal, octagonal. or other geoinetr19 shape, in order to space the bars 2 and yet form a cage surrounding the longitudinal axis of the lamp passing through substantially the centers oi? the cross parts l. Preterably the ends of the parts 2 and 4, which are formed of wire, are secured to the rings 3 within the outer planes of the rings and so as to avoid any protruding parts of the frame beyond. the rings and so that the rings, when the lamp is coverec'l. by a suitable shade, will form smooth and even corners of the lamp. The parts ol the frame may be secured by welding or by any othersuitable methods well known in the art.
The frame 1 is also provided with the parts 5 that are also located parallel to each other and the bars 52, but by their inwardly bent ends 6, which are secured to the rings 3, are located more remote from the axis bf the trams 1 than the bars 2. A bracket member is connected to the cross parts at for pivotally supporting the trance 1. The bracket member i0 is provided with a suitable means for connecting it to any piece of furniture, such as, to the upper edge of a bed. In the form of construction shown, the bracket 1.0 is provided with a pair of books 11 that may be slipped over the upper edge o'l any article of furniture, such as, the up per edge oi the head oi a bed. The bracket has two protruding arms 12 that are spaced apart substantially the length. of the frame and extendto the centers of the cross parts 4, Any suitalile means may be provided for pivotally connecting the frame to the protruding arms 12.
In the form of construction shown, the bracket 10 has looped end portions that form the hooks 11 and the wire is bent endwise with respect to the bracket as at the points 15 and then laterally as at the points 16, and then are bent at the points 17 to form parallel portions that are located substantially in contact with each other to form the arms 12 and are then bent at the points 18 to form the longitudinal extending part 19 of the bracket that integrally joins together the hooks 11 and the arms 12 of opposite ends of the frame. Suitable pins or rivets extend through the arms 12 and substantially the centers of the cross parts 4.

It is then bent as at 33 and 34 to forma portion 35 that again extends towards the longitudinal axis of the frame and again bent to form an are 36 hav ing a curvature the same as the semi-circular The end of the are 36, however, terminates at a'point that is so located with respect to the inner ends of the parts 27 and 30 where they oin the two semicircular parts 24 and 31 which is substantially equal to the'diameter of the base of the mouth piece 37 through which the bead chain 38 extends and which is used for operating the switch of the socket 39 of the light bulb. The semi-circular portions 24, 31 and 36 lie substantially in an imaginary cylinder that has a diameter substantially the same as that of the socket 39 of the lamp bulb. W'hen,
therefore, the electric bulb and its socket is to be positioned, it is inserted within the circular portions 24 and 36 and is so turned that the mouth piece 37 will pass between the end of the portion 36 and the point of connection between the semi-circular portion 24 and the part 27 of the bracket 25. This will also position the socket between the portions 24 and 31 on the lower side of the socket and the portion 36 on the upper side of the socket and the axis of the socket and the light bulb 40 will be located substantially in the axis of the frame 1. The socket 39 may be rotated so as to locate the mouth piece 37 between the two semi-circular portions 24 and 31. Pulling on the beaded chain 38 will also so locate the mouth piece and repeated operation of the switch to turn the light off and on will operate to do the same and so that in the use of the switch of the lamp the The frame 1 is provided mouth piece 37 will be maintained between the semi-circular portions 24 and 31. When the mouth piece 37 is in this position, the socket cannot be removed from the bracket by reason of engagement of the mouth piece with the semi-circular portions 24 and 31. In order to remove the socket it is necessary to rotate the socket so as to locate the mouth piece in contact with the end of the arcuate portion 36 of the bracket 25 and then move the socket axially with respect to the frame 1.
The frame 1 may be covered with any suitable sheet material, such as, cloth 44 of different kinds that may be secured in position by meansof stitchin and the like, or it may be covered with pare nnent which may be secured in position by cementitious material. The fabricated material covers the frame entirely except the space between the bars 5 in order to confine the light that passes directly from the bulb 40 to a definite zone that spreads fan like from the axis of the frame. The lower side of the lamp is provided with an opaque shield that extends from the lower of the parallel, bars 5 to, preferably, the bar 2 that terminates in juxtaposed relation to the ends of the cross parts 4 as indicated in Fig. 2. The frame 1 may be provided with an eye 46 and a bulb cord 47 may extend through the eye 46 to the socket 39. The ring 46 may be formed of wire and secured within the plane of an end ring 3 of the frame 1.
The frame 1 may be pivotally connected to the arms 11 by means of the pins 50 that are secured to the cross parts 4. Openings are formed in the ends of the arms 12 that may he slipped over the pins 50. If desired washers 01 may be located intermediate the arms 12 and the cross parts 4. The pin 50 may be threaded and the thumb nut 52 may be iccated on the pin 50 and rotated so as to secure the arm 12 in position and thus rotatably secure the frame in the bracket 10.
I claim:
1. A bed lamp substantially cylindrical in form, a bracket for pivotally supporting the bed lamp for rotation about the cylindrical axis of the lamp, means for supporting an electric light bulb substantially in the axis of rotation of the lamp, the major axis of the lamp being located substantially in the axis of rotation, a shade member conforming to the substantially cylindricity of the lamp and having an opening extendin r substantially the length of the lamp and parallel to the axis of the lamp and having a width materially less than the diameter of the lamp, the edges of the opening being located at a distance from the axis of the lamp that is greater than the other portions of the lateral wall of the lamp from the axis of the lamp to form protruding lips about the openings.

A bed lamp substantially cylindrical in form, a bracket for pivotally supporting the bed lamp for rotation about the cylindrical axis of the lamp, means for supporting an electric light bulb substantially in the aXis of rotation of the lamp, the major axis of the lamp being located substantially in the axis of rotation, a shade member conform ing to the substantially cylindricity of the lamp and having an opening extending substantially the length of the lamp and paral' lel to the axis of the lamp, and having a width materially less than the diameter of the lamp, an opaque member covering the lower side of the lamp and extending to the lower edge of the opening of the shade.
3. In a bed lamp, a frame of wire bent substantially to conform to a cylinder and having parts extending across the ends of the cylinder, a bracket having protruding arms extending to substantially the center of the cross parts of the frame, means for pivotally connecting the cross parts to the protruding arms, the frame having a pair of parallel parts located more remote from the longitudinal axis through the centers of the cross parts than the other parts of the frame, means for supporting an electric lamp bulb and socket substantially in the axis extending through the said centers of the cross parts, a substantially opaque shield extending across the lower side of the frame to the lower of the parallel parts of the frame, and a shade of fabricated sheet material covering the lamp frame from one parallel part to the other and across the ends and forming an opening be tween the parallel parts.

In a bed lamp, a frame of wire bent substantially to conform to a cylinder and having parts extending across the ends of the cylinder, a bracket member secured to opposite sides of the frame and formed of wire having two semi-circular portions located in substantially parallel arrangement and an arcuate portion located between the parallel planes of the semi-circular portions and positioned in diametrically opposite arrangement with respect to the semicircular portion, the said semi-circular portions and the arcuate portion having a curvature substantially the same as that of the standard electric lamp socket whereby a lamp socket may be connected to the bracket member by inserting it in between the semicircular portions and the arcuate portion.
5; In a bed lamp, a frame of wire bent substantially to conform to a cylinder and having parts extending across the ends of the cylinder, a bracket member connected to opposite sides of the frame for supporting an electric lamp and socket within the frame, the socket having a mouthpiece in which the cable of the lamp switch is: located, the bracket member formed of wire and having a pair of semi-circular portions located in parallel planes and having a curvature substantially the same as the curvature of the surface of the socket for receiving the one side of the socket, the bracket member having an arcuate portion located between the planes of the semi-circular portions and having a curvature substantially the same as that of the surface of the socket for receiving the upper side of the socket, the distance between the end of the arcuate portion and the end of one of the semi-sir cular portions being substantially the same as the smaller diameter of the mouthpiece whereby the lamp may be secured to the bracket by insertion of the lamp between the semi-circular portions and the arcuate portion, the mouthpiece adapted to substan tially lit and pass between the end of the arcuate portion and the end of one of the semi-circular portions and by slight rotation of the socket to locate the mouthpiece between the semi-circular portions.
