Description
Patented Dec. 27,1927. y y

celeron.
M invention relates to cartons, and more particularly to closing flaps therefor, adapted to provide an interlocked closure for the carton, Without requiring the sealing thereof. In cartons made from heav stock, it is difficult to provide an interloc ing end flap` *f structure, which can be closed in over the goods within the carton, and secured without taping or cement, by means of intereni gaging 'hooks or the like on the ends of the iaps.
There is a type'of cartons in which the Iiaps may be secured togetherin interlocked relation by arranginfr them 'y and then de- 115` pressing all iaps well into the box so. that the interlocking can take place. This form of setting up a closing arrangement fora cartontis not possible where there are goods within the ',carton.
t 2o `.It is the object of my invention to pro vide a'smple da structure which will permit of an inter ocked closure, VWithout in'- terference with the contents of the carton, or shipping case. Y
This-object I accomplish by that certain construction and arranfgmentA of `parts to be hereinafter more specically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawing: fr
Figure 1 is a plan view of the one end of acarton or shipping package.
Figure 42 is a perspective of the carton fully closed.
which when secured to sectiolil, will orm v a tubular structure for the carton, -to be closed by the endiaps. p The end flaps are shown at Abut one end of the'carton and are lettered'A, B, Cj and D. FlapsB and C are alike, and have edges B1 and C1, formed at a slant from fthescore lines defining vthe sections Y2 and 3. When closed these two edges form diagonal lines from the4 cornersl 'of Ythe carton, crossing l, each other at the center. Beyond the point where the edges -B1 and C1 cro each other,
the flaps B and C are extended at .Cf-and.,
gular ends, from Vwhich- B. to form"rectan ends the edges C and B* @attend back in ,substantial alignment with-the 'score lines 5 deningsectnhofthecrtnn.
The aps A and D are substantially the 1same and have edges A1 and D1 lwhich form diagonals as in the instance of edges` B1 and C1. The'two iiaps are then formed in curves A2 and D2, forming hooks. The tips 60 of the two flaps extend straight across as at Aa and'Da, and the remain1ng edges ex tend substantially in\ alignment Iwith tlie score lines from which lthese edges extend, but at a slight slant.
. In setting up the carton iiaps -for closing Y i. the end of the box,l flaps B and Care yclose by bending down B and then bending C over the top oi it. Flap D is then bent down, and the hook portion thereof will V 'engage under the diagonal edge of flap B.
Flap A is `then bent down. .I provide a score line A5 across this iiap, which will permit the iiap to be bent-so that the portion segregated by the score line can be thrust under the diagonal edge of flap yB. When this is done and the flap A is pressed down against the threeV iiapsf already in place,
the hook A2 Will engagel with hook D, and both fla s A and D willl hold down the flaps 30 B and .l A
Thus the entire carton end. is closed and locked shut without use of tapes, cement or other added means of security.
Having thus described my invention, what 35 i I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent; is f l 1. \In a carton having a plurality of lock-* u ing closure fla s, ablank formed into four Walls, adapte tol form ya rectangular enclosure, and having end flapsV to"form1an end closure, said flaps being formedof triangular shape with one edge adapted'4 to lie diagonally' part way across the box, and
the other edge adapted to vlie substantially in alignment with the top -of an adjacent wall of thel carton and with more than one of the flaps when the flaps are folded at right angles to` Ithe side walls of the carton, y havinga portion of their diagonalp edges extended lonl' sufficiently beyond the dia- -gonal lines rom erner to corner olf the bo x ,to Aform interlocking abutments at the center'of'the box, and one of said closing flaps Vprovided with means forv interlocking the other three flaps while the otherl three flaps are held in a-position of interlocked engagement by the extended portion o f one of the other of saidA closing aps.' 2- In a carton having a pluraltyp-o-lock- 11 $515, adapte to form a rectangular enclosure, and having end flaps to form an end closure, said flapsl being formed of ytriangular shape with one edge adapted to Jlie diagonally part wa across the box, andthe other edge adapted1 Ato lie substantially in alignment with thtop of an adjacent wall of the carton' and -With more than one of the flaps when the flaps are folded at right angles to the side walls: of the carton, hav# ing a portion of their diagonal edges extended only suciently beyond the diagonal v lines from 'corner to corner of the box to form' interlocking abutments at the center 15 of the box, and one of said closing a provided with means for interlocking t e otherhthree flaps while the other three flaps are held in a position of inberlocked en ment by the extended portion of one at e 2" other of said closing flaps,4 said last closing lap having acrosswise extending score line Y for the'easy insertion of said flap into locked engagement.
