Application filed April 7, 1927, Serial No. 181,688, and in Germany December 3, 1925.
This invention has reference to labeling machines, and it is particularly intended to devise means of preventing displacement of the labels in the attachingoperation and to facilitate and accelerate the manipulation of the labels and the attaching thereof. In the labeling devices according to the previous art there was the inconvenience that the objects and articles to be labeled were often liable to assume an inclined or relatively angular position from various causes,
so as to result in inaccuracy of the position packages may be brought into theproper labeling position, so that the labels will be attached in perfectly regular and unobjectionable manner.
The invention and its mode of operation will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing by way of exemplification a device embodying the principles of the invention in Figures 1 and 3 in vertical and partial longitudinal section with different positions of the main c operating parts; while Figure 2 is a partial transverse section of the device.
The usual well-known portion of the labeling device comprises conveying means, for instance, a channeled trough or guide way 1 for the articles to be labeled, such as for instance packages 2 which by means of the blocks or tappets 3 mounted on the con- 4 -veying chain 4 may be moved underneath the gripping cylinder 5 by means of which the label is rollingly secured to the package.
The gripping cylinder 5 receives the label by means of the grippers or fingers 6 which are operated in a manner not shown from the segment-roller 7 which is provided with mucilage from fiche gluing roller 8 and pulls out the label from a reciprocating supplying container or hopper 22 mounted on the carriage 9. wheelll for effecting the movement of the chain 4 is driven which by means of a chain 12 or by belt drive operates the shaft 13 of the gripping cylinder 5. The gear wheels 14, 15 transmit the motion from the shaft 13 to the shaft 16 of the se ental roller 7. Upon this roller 7 a cam disc 17 is secured adapted to reciprocate a rocking lever 19 pivoted to the stud 18 and which by means of the link- 20 is operatively connected to the container 22 for the labels, whose supporting carriage 9 is adapted to slide along the guide bars 21. p A spring 23- tends to draw the container 22 to the left. Upon a shaft 24 disposed in parallel relation to the shaft 13 of the gripping cylinder 5 a segmental arm 25 is keyed to the lower end of which a stop bar or batten 26 is pivotally secured and which may be rockingly reciprocated by the cam disc 28 secured to the shaft 13 and by means of the roller-lever 27 cooperating with the cam disc 28.
In the operation ofthe device the article or object 2 is advancedfby the tappet 3, and shortly before it reaches the gripping cylinder 5, the pressure bar 26 of the lever system 25, 27 is placed in front of.the article 2 by the-pull of a spring 29 and retains the article 2 in its position during the labeling operation so that the label may be attached in the proper position.. Upon continuing the movement of the article 2 the stop bar 26 is caused to pass over the article by means of the cam disc 28 and is lowered into its initial position according to Figure 1 after the passing of the'tappet 3, so as to be adapted to act as the support for the succeeding article and to properly position and adjust'the same, if required. Inview of its pivotal attachment to arm 25 the pressure bar 26 adapts itself very well to the shape of the various articles.
The supporting of the articles in the labeling operation presents the further important advantage that it is also possible 100 to position and attach the labels upon objects and articles with soft contents or delicate wra ping and with readily in ured or I mashed v g, while still applying acertain pressure. i 105 Instead of the labeling device; herein may be applied to any other labelingfdevice', and other modifications and changes in" the thereof may be introduced except as otherwise stated in the appended claims.
, I claim:
1. In a labeling device employing a labeling element and a conveyor for feeding the articles to be labeled to and past the labeling element, a stop device movable into the path of the label at the labeling moment to hold it in proper position during the labeling operation and which is yield-able with the article under the movement of the conveyor so that the label may be applied while the article is in motion.
2. In a labeling device employing a rotary label applying 0 linder and a conveyor for feeding the artic es to be labeled to and past the labeling cylinder, a pivotally mounted pressure arm movable toward and from the cylinder and adapted'to partially surround the main the label appl ing operation, a stop device carried by said arm, a cam for moving said arm in one direction, and a o ring for moving said arm in the reverse Keenan.
' 3. A device as set forth in claim 2 wherein the stop device is movably mounted on the arm.
4. In a labeling device a conveyor, supporting and stralghtening means on said conveyor adapted to ide an article to be labeled, ,a rotatable gripping cylinder above said conveyor, means to feed a label to said gripping cylinder, a reciprocating pressure arm intermediate the gripping cylinder and the conveyor and adapted to move in front of the supporting means and of the article, and label supplying means cooperating with the label feeding means and with the gripping cylinder.
5. In a labeling device a conveyor, sup porting and straightening means on said conveyor adapted to guide an article to be labeled, a. rotatable gripping cylinder above said conveyor, means to feed a label to said gripping cylinder, a reciprocating pressure arm intermediate the gri ping cylinder and the conveyor and adapted to move in front of the supporting means and of the article and operating means on said gripping cylinder engageable with the pressure arm and adapted to move the same in and out of engagement with the article.
6. In a labeling device a conveyor, supporting means on said conveyor adapted to support and guide an article to be labeled, a rotatable gripping cylinder above said conveyor, a reciprocable label-container, labelfeeding means intermediate said containei and the gripping cylinder, and adapted to feed a label from the container to the gripping cylinder, a reciprocable and rockingly disposed arm intermediate the gripping cylinder and the conveyor, a movable pressure bar on said arm, ada ted to place itself in front of the supporting means and of the article, and means on said gripping cylinder to operate said arm and to move the arm past the article. a
7. In a labeling device in combination, an endless conveyor, supporting and stopping means cooperating with the conveyor and adapted to support and guide an article to be labeled, a rotatable gripping cylinder,.a reciprocable label-container, label feeding means engageable with the label-container, and means on said feeding means, operatively connected to the container and adapted to reciprocate the same, label gluing means cooperating with the feeding means, reciprocable and rockable means, intermediate the conveyor and the gripping cylinder, spring actuated means forcing the said reciprocable and rockable means in front of the supporting means and of an article under ressure, and'means to rock said reciproca le and rocking means.
8. In a labeling device, means for supporting and stopping an article while being labeled and releasing the same after the label is applied, comprising a rockably disposed, spring pressed arm, a pivotally mounted stopmember at the end of said arm and adapted for yielding enga 'ement with the article, and means for melting the arm to bring the stop member into and out of the path of the article.
