IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlN-SEPARATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 165,373, dated July 6, 1875 application filed March 25, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, HURLBER'I H. SEELEY, of Fenwick, inthe county of Montcalm, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fanning-Mills and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany- 1ng drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to fanning-mills or separators for separating grain and the nature of my invention consists, particularly, in the construction of the lower shoe with the devices for supporting the same, and in the method of fastening the screens or sieves in the upper shoe, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Flgure 1 is a perspective view of a fanning mlll embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig.

3 is a perspective view of the adjustable frame for raising and lowering the lower shoe. Fig. 4 is a bottom perspective view of the lower shoe.

A. represents the frame of a fanning-mill. B is the hopper; 0, the fan-case, with interior revolving fan D. E is the upper shoe, suspended by straps a a, and operated by suitable means from the shaft of the fan D. G is the 7 lower shoe, also operated from the fan-shaft.

In the lower shoe G are trap-doors b b, hung upon suitable pivots, and held either open or closed by means of springs d d. By opening the trapdoors b b, as shown in Fig. 2, apertures are made in the bottom of the shoe, so as to make three grades of grain. The lower end of the shoe Gr runs on a rod, 0, in the frame, and the upper end rests on an adjustable and removable frame, H, which is on each side provided with a pin, t, at the lower end, and a tenon, h, at the upper end, said pins and tenons running in grooves f in the sides of the mill. The tenons It may be inserted in. different grooves, so as to elevate or depress the upper end-of the frame, thereby raising or lowering the lower shoe, the frame being held by pressing the tenonshinto notches w, made in the various grooves On the under side of the shoe G are leather or other pieces, 7c Ir, to rest on the rod 6, and on the frame H, to take the wear ofl'theshoe. The sieves I- in the upper shoe E are also provided with side tenons to slide in grooves f, and the tenons at the upper ends drop in notches 4c, and thus fastening the sieves in place.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
