This invention relates generally to a combined phonograph and radio receiving set, and more particularly to an instrument in which the phonograph and radio receiving set are contained in the same cabinet, and
the employment in such combination of eleof mechanism whereby thesound amplifying portions of a phonograph can be employed as a common amplifier for ampllfying audio frequency in connection with radio receiving apparatus and forsound reproduction from a phonograph record.
One of the objects of my invention is the construction of a combined. phonograph and radio apparatus, utilizing a common amplifier having means to connect or disconnect the radio sound producing means or the phonograph producing means from the said amplifier.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple, rugged device which will allow the playing and amplification: of phonograph sounds in the usual way, wlthout any tone losses, and by an easy manipulation at the will of the operator, the same phonograph horn maybe used to amplify a radio reproducer also without tone losses.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which, when manipulated at the. will of the operator, will, by valve action, interrupt the free passage of sound" from the phonograph reproducer to the horn, and simultaneously open a freepassage for the sound from the radio reproducer and With a manual movement in the.
opposite direction will produce a reverse simultaneous result.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple device subject to the will and easy manual control of the operator, whereby the volume of sound issuing from the horn or amplifier, produced either by the phonograph or radio reproducer, may be progressively increased to the maximum ability of either reproducer, or decreased to a mere whisper, or either reproducer may be shut ofi' entirely. All these effects may be secured without any tone losses whatsoeveryexceptsuch tone losses as are brought about at the express desire of the operator;

Another object is to provide an instrument in which the receiving set and the phonograph are compactly arranged in a cabinet of attractive appearance. The combining of these elements is to economize space'and to utilize an amplifier for both purposes. I i I Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination phonograph and radio, which will be compact, simple in construction, economical to manufacture, eliicient in operation, attractive in appearance'and inexpensive to manufacture.
Withthese and other objects in view, to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the operation and construction herein described in the'following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In a device of the character described, a rectangular sound transfer chamber, an amplifier opening in one side of said cham' her, a sound tube opening in the same side of said chamber, but off-set from said amplifier opening, a second sound tube opening in ond tube opening into the upper wall of said chamber approximately opposite said a1nplifier opening, said second tube connecting a phonograph tone arm to said chamber, an L-shaped valve slide movable in said chamber, said valve slide having a perforate gate slidable along the top wall of the chamber and an imperforate gate closing an enu of the chamber, means by which said valve slide may be moved in said chamber, a movement of said slide in one direction, shutting ofi' said tone arm tube from said chamber, and a movement in the opposite direction isolating said telephone receiver tube from said chamber.
