This invention relates to machines for pasting labels on containers.
Label-pasting machines heretofore in use are applicable only to circular cans or containers which may be rolled easily when their axes are disposed horizontally. This invention is designed to provide a machine which will apply'or affix labels to noncircular cans and containers, such as oval, square or rectangular cans which are used quite generally in the packing of fruits, vegetables and fish. lrlitherto in practice these non-circular cans and particularly oval cans have been labeled by hand, the cost beine` about 4e per case. vWith the machine of the present invention this work can be done at one-half the cost.
A principal object of the invention, therefore, resides in providing a label aflizring machine for operating on irregular contour cans and containers. wherein is provided means for automatically receiving` containers successively from a suitable source of supply; continuously moving said containers in such processional arrangement that each container and a label are so prepared and brought into such operative relation that the label is caused to be wrapped around the container and become ailixed thereto.
Another object of the invention resides in povidine' paste applying devices of a peculia.` and special construction and arrangement, whereby the movements of a container adjacent said paste applying devices will so effect their operation and action as to cause a predetermined area of each can or container to receive a. measured application of paste7 whereby as the container' advances in its path of movement it automatically engages and extracts a label from suitable source of supply and winds said label around its periphery.
Other objects and advantages than herein enumerated have been evolved in the designing' ot' a machine emboryinp; my invention, and I consider all such advantages as fall within the scope and meaning' of the claims hereto append-.et coming within the purview of mv invention. l also wish it understood that the several necessaryr elements, parts and conibinations constituting the same may be varied in their proportions, placement and general arrangement With- Selial No. 657,057.
out departing` from the scope and nature of the invention.
In connection with the drawings forming a part of this application, l wish to point out that the general arrangement of the related operative parts, their placement and operative timing have all been so shown and displayed that the operation of the invention would be most clearly understood.l The drawings, therefore, are to be lookedk upon as somewhat diagrammatic in character and disclosure and not necessarily representing manufacturing procedure.
The machine in its preferred form includes convcyer mechanism, carrying a plus rality of chucks rotatably mounted thereon on vertical axes to receive the cans or containers in upright position. At one side of the conveyor are paste-applying devices and at the other side is a .magazine for holding labels. As the cans are carried along` by the conveyer they are rotated on a vertical axis and come in contact with the pasteapply'ip; devices and the labels whereby paste will first be applied at desired points on the can body and thereafter the label will be engaged so as to adhere to the can body and be carried around as the latter rotates.
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which f l is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention and clearly shows the endless conveyer carrying the can chucks: the power means for driving the various movingT velements and the drive connections for operating the paste-applying devices.

zine is open and the labels are kept in place by pins arranged at the top and bottom at suitable intervals. As the pasted surface of the can contacts with the end of the label the latter will be pulled out otl the magazine, being punctured slightly at its top and bott-om to release itself from the pins 30. Meantime the other corner or short curved section of the can is being pasted by intermediate pasting devices, so that when the latter portion of the can comes in contact With the label the latter will adhere thereto. Finally the corner or curved section originally pastedwill again contact with a pasting device and the front end of the label, together with the adjacent surface of the can, Will receive additional paste or glue so that the overlapping ends of the label will be pasted together and to the can.
When dealing with oval cans pret'er to use three pasting devices so positioned as to apply paste iirst to one short curved section, then to the opposite short curved section and tinally to the hist-mentioned curved section. Thereby the label is pasted at its overlapping ends and its middle. Vtlhen dealing with square or rectangular cans ,l may use three or .tive paste-applying devices. lVhen tive are employed, each corner ot a can will be pasted and the tirst corner repasted to secure the overlapping ends ot the label in place.
A label smoothing member 3l is arranged in the path ot the rotating can in position to press against the overlapping ends oi the label and thus assist in sealing the ends in place and smoothing out any wrinkles formed in the label. By the time a can nears the end or the conveyer it has made two and one-halt revolutions and the chucks are again disposed with their major aXes extending longitudinally ot' the conveyer. At this point the toothed rack terminates and the chuck passes between inclined rails 252 which project up above the adjacent sides of the chuck and act to lilt the can otl` and deliver it by gravity or otherwise to the de- The chuck continues along the bottom run of the conveyer, being held against turning movement by contact with the guide rails 1G.
A feature ot' the paste-applying devices consists in connecting each box or pan 'on a vertical pivot 33 at the side opposite the vertical shatt and arranging a springpressed plunger 3l at one corner ot the pan to torce the pan inwardly toward the conveyer whereby the paste-applying shat't will pressyieldingly against the side or corner of the can.
The problem involved in mechanically pastingl labels on cans or packages ot nona circular .configuration is one ot avoiding slack .in the label. Inasmuch as the can is irregular in shape it is not at all times in contact with the label during its turning movement as is a circular can, and hence if its rotative and linear movements are not properly related, slack will occur in the label between the points ot' adhesion. The desired result is obtained by using a gear having a circumferential pitch equal to the perimeter oi the can body. In this way the same etl'ect is obtained as it the can were circular and remained in contact at all times with the label while being rolled or rotated.
As a, means oli' feeding the cans so as to position them properly on the chucks Without resorting to timing mechanism I make use of a delivery chute formed of spaced angle bars of resilient material. At the discharge end of these bars are arranged stop lugs 35 which arrest the downward movement of the cans. The short curved section of the can, however, projects beyond the delivery chute and into close proximity with the conveyer so that when a chuck approaches it cngagcs the rim of the cam and pulls the latter oil' the delivery chute, the angle bars spreading apart to allow the can to pass between the lugs.
The operation of my improved non-circu lar, can-labeling machine is as follows: Suitable adhesive is placed in the paste boxes 26 and a pack of labels placed in the label magazine 27. Cans are started down the chute 1S, where they slide instead ot roll7 and are retained in position for t'eeding theretrom by means ot the stop blocks Power is provided to operate the machine through the medium ot a motor and suitable reduction gearing clearly shown in side elevation in F l. Electric switch and controlling means n'iay be located at any suitable place; these have not been illustrated as they are procurable through ordinary commercial channels. The motor being started, the conveyer chain carrying the chuck members begins to advance under the chute containing the cans, and as the forward edge oll a chuck approaches the do\vnwardly inclined edge ot' the foremost can in the chute, it engages the seam edge ot this can, as is shown in Fig. 6, and b v its advancing movement pulls the can out otl the chute against the resistance ot' the spring pressed retaining block 5K5, the spring action of this block resulting 'from the thin steel bar carrying the block. and. as the can and chuck advance together the can gradually lowers onto the chuck and is finally v'forced into position thereon through the action ot the spring pressed top bar 20 extending longitudinally over the path ot' the cans. As soon as each chuck reaches the longitudinal rack 21 the teeth ot the chuck gear engage with the teeth ot the rack and the chuck begins axial rotative movement. This operation is successively repeated for each groove as the paste Wheel rotates until each groove has received a supply, and, owing to the continuous rotation of the paste Wheel 24 and the grooved transfer' Whee-'l 23 a continuous supply of paste is given to the grooves of the transfer Wheel to replace that transferred to the surfaces of passing cans.
The fluid consistency of the paste and the peripheral speed of the large paste roll Will have some measure of influence in determining the amount of paste that is carried around for distribution to the grooves of the transfer roll. This Will also be influenced someivhat by the depth of immersion of the large paste roll in the body ot' paste. These various conditions are amenable tu manipulation so that practically any condition of operation of the paste applying devices may be established to suit any conditions of operation of the machine as a whole and to suit varying shapes and sizes of cans that may be operated upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A method of pasting labels on non-circular packages comprising the steps of advancing the package bodily and simultaneously rotating the same, applying adhesive material to the body of the package at points remotest from the center thereof and bringing such points into contact With a label While one end of the latter is held stationary to produce a slight tension thereon and so timing the movement of the package that it will be advanced ay distance corresponding to the length of its perimeter during one revolution and wrap the label about itself by reason of said tension.
2. A method of applyingr a label to a package of non-circular configuration which consists of advancing the package bodily and simultaneously rotating the same through a course which will bring the points remotest from the center of the package into contact with a label while one end of the lat-ter is held stationary to produce a slight tension thereon, the movement being such that the package vvill progress a distance corresponding` to the length of its perimeter during one revolution and Wrap the label about itselfbv reason of said tension.

5. A. method of applying labels to packages of non-circular configuration consisting of advancing the packages and simultaneously rotating them, applying adhesiveto the first promontory on the package. bringing that promontory into contact with one end kot a label, applying adhesive to the next promontory on the package and bringing it into contact with an intermediate portion of the label and finally applying adhesive to the first-mentioned promontory and bringing it into cont-act with the other end ot' the label, the last-named end of the label being meanwhile held stationary.
6. A method of applying labels to pack- I ages of non-circular configuration consisting of advancing the packages and simultaneously rotating them,` applying adhesive to the lirst promontory on the package, bringing that promontory into contact with one end of a label,l applying` adhesive to the next promontory on the package and bringing it into contact with an intermediate portion of the label and finally applying adhesive to the first-mentioned promontory and bringing it into contact with the other end of the label and timing the advancement and rotation of the package so that but one revolution will occur during the distance of travel corresponding to the length o-f the perimeter of the package.
7. A machine for applying labels to packages of non-circular configuration comprising means for advancing the packages along a horizontal path. means for simultaneously rotating the said packages about a vertical axis and adhesive-applying devices and labels disposed along the line of travel of the packages in successive order and so positioned that the promontories on the packages will contact, therewith.

T ie method of applyingl labels to noncircular containers, comprising the moving ot' containers, successively, in predetermined lineal paths and in processional arrangement, imparting predetermined rotative movement to said containers as they are moved lineally, disposing' labels with their ends and intermediate portions in the path of travel ot the articles, applying` adhesive to portions ot' each container as it passes adhesive-applying' stations. successively bringing each container into Contact With a label whereby the rotation ot said container will piel; up and Wrap thc said label about its perimeter and overlap the ends thereof.

A method ot atiizting labels to containers, comprising* the positive moving of containers in processional arrangement, simultaneous-ly giving each containerl lineal and rotative movement. applying' adhesive to a portion ot' each container. contacting said adhesive portion with a label whereby said label is caused to adhere to said container and be Wrapped thereabout as said cont ainer is rotated, applying adhesive to another portion ot said container, continuing the rotation and Wrapping ot said label around said container, again applying adhesive to a portion ot' the area that lirst received adhe sive. and to the outer surface ot the end ot the label adhering to the said container and continuingv the rotation ot said container, whereby the said label is completely wrapped thereabout and the ends overlapped and secured together.

A machine for automatically applying labels to containers, comprising means `for positively holding and movingcontainers in both linear and rotary paths, means located Within the rotary paths of said containers for applying adhesive thereto, labels located With their opposite ends Within the rotary and linear paths of said containers for contacting' therewith and becoming' ailixed thereto.

A machine for automatically applying labels to containers, comprising' means for extracting containers from a suitable source of supply and imparting rotary movementto said containers, means for imparting linear movements to said containers, rotary dispensing devices 'for applying paste to said containers, and means for causing' a label to adhere to each container as it passes along its path and become atlixed thereto.

A machine for automatically applying labels to containers, comprising; means for extracting containers from a suitable source of supply and imparting rotary movement thereto, means for impartingr linear movement to said containers, paste-dispensing devices for applyingl paste to said containers having' paste transfer grooves and the other ot said elements havingY a concave tace and adapted to carry past-e from a suitable source ot supply and deposit portions ot same in the said transter grooves.
