Description

L. H. BRINKMAN Dec; 20, 1927.
GOLF STICK inal Filed June 24. 1924 INVENTOR.
/ ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 20, 1927.
UNITED STATES I 1,653,428 PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS H. BRINKMAN, OF GLEN RIDGE, NEW JERSEY."
GOLF STICK.
Original application filed .Tune 24, 1924, Serial No. 721,965. Divided and this application flled October 31,
- 1925. Serial No. 65,918.
This invention relates to tubular metal shafts for golf sticks.
This applicatioin is a division of my application Serial No. 721,965 filed June 24, 1924.
Metal tubes form light, durable and strong shafts for golf clubs but heretofore such shafts have been of tubes of a uniformly tapering diameter and have not had the balance, flexibility at desired points etcQ, all of which are summed up in the term feel of the club.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide tubular metal shafts for golf clubs which shall have the desired f l This is accomplished by suitably varying the taper of the tube diameter and the thickness of the tube wall may be made such, either uniform or' varying in thickness at different points, as will contribute to the desired results. The desired feel varies with different users but the shaft most often filling the desired requirements is one .in which f the tube is of reversed taper in tube diam.-
eter and having uniform thickness of wall, and such construction'is therefore my preferred form.
- Other and ancillary objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
-In the accompanying illustrate the invention Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a shaft for a golf club;
Fig. 2 is a view showing theshaft in sec- ;ion;
Fig. 3is a view of a modified form of golf club showing the shaft in longitudinal section;
Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of club showing the shaft in longitudinal section; and I Fig. 5 is a view of another modified form of golf club, the shaft being shownin longitudinal section.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the golf shaft shown is of a seamless steel tubing having substan tially uniform thickness of wall throughout and having a uniform taper throughout the greater partof its length but having a short section" at its end of uniform. diameter.
- Thus the part 56 is of uniform taper of tube 1 diameter and, extends for the greater portion of the length of the shaft. to the point Gland thence to the end is the section 57 of drawings which 1 uniform diameter (the whole shaft being of unlform thickness of wall) adapted to recelve the shank 63 of the head 64 of a golf 'club, the two being secured together in any out the greater part of its length to a point of minimum diameter 79 and thence tapering oppositely or reversely through a section 80 to a point 81 and thence being of cyclindrical section 82 to the end' of the shaft.
In Fig. 4 is shown a shaftv having a tapered tube of uniform thickness of wall for the section 65 which extends for the greater portion of its length and terminating at the narrowest portion 66 and thence having the section 67 of uniform internal diameter but of increasing external diameter (the tube increasing in thickness) to a point 68 whence the tube shaft extends with uniform thickness of wall and uniform diameter of tube to its end. It is to be observed in connection with the shafts of Figs. 3 and 4. that the points 66 and 79 are those of the least outside diameters of the tube, the shafts being of greater outside diameters upon both sides of those points. This affords a means for decreasing the size of the shaft adjacent the head or whenever desired so as to give suitable flexibility at desired points of the shaft. 1
In Fig. 5 is shown a shaft the same as that of Fig. 3 except that the wall of the tube is thickened at the waist or portion of least diameter so that while flexibllity of the shaft is obtained at that point the club shaft may be strengthened. The. shaft as shown in it may have other embodiments without de All of the shafts of Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive,
which are seamless, may be formed by the method and apparatus as described in my application Serial No. 721,965 above referred to and of Which the present application is adivision.
A seamless tube 'is superior for forming the shaftsbecause the desired characteristics are more readily imparted to it and it retains those characteristics under all conditions of use so that it is more satlsfactory, reliable and durable, and especially it is immune from injury by torsional stresses while permitting desired flexibility.
While the invention has been illustrated in what are considered its best applications extending from the handle toward thehead,
said length being of greater diameter at itshandle end than at its other end and constituting the reater part of the shaft length, a second tu e length between the aforesaid length and 'said head and having its outside diameter greater at its head end than at its handle end and a third tube length between said second tube length and the head end of said shaft, said third tube length having a different relationship of succeedingo'utside diameters from that of the said. second tube length.
3. A golf club having a head and a shaft comprising a metal tube having a tube length extending for the greater part of the length of the shaft and beingof less outside diam- I eter at its head end than at its handle end, a
second tube length adjoining the said tube length and having its handle end of less outside diameter than its head end and a third tube length between the said second tube length and the head-end of-the' shaft, said third tube length having adiiferent relationship of succeeding outside diameters from that of the second tube length, said tube lengths being circumferentially continuous. 4. A golf club having a head and a shaft comprising a metal tube having a waist formed by reversely tapered tube lengths, said tube lengths being circumferentially continuous, and a tube length adjoining one of the aforesaid tube-lengthsand having a different relationshipof succeeding outside;
diameters from that of its adjacent tapered" tube length. v
5. A golf club having'a head and a shaft comprisinga seamless metal tube having a Waist formed by reversely tapered tube lengths and a tube extension of substantial; length adjoining one of the aforesaid tube lengths and having a different relationship of succeeding outside. diameters from that of its adjacent tapered tube length. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification this 30th day of.Qctobe1,,.1925.
