`App1ication filedlune`i28f1927. Serial No. 202,045.
j This inventionrelates to measuring molds for' ice cream and similarinaterial and more particularly to molds equipped with an ej ecting plunger.
A primary objectof the invention is to .provide a two-in-one apparatus consisting of a :mold having a (plunger with a handle which may be `,made stationary for pushing the mold down into the material to bemeasured and dispensed andvvhich is readily yreleased to convertit into an ejector forforct ingiout the measured product from the barrel.
This plunger may also be used as an inside cleaner for the barrel or body ofthe mold,
byv reciprocating it rapidly inca cleansing fluid. 1
yAnother objectlof theinvention is to proof oneihand. v
` j The details' of construction and;` arrangci ment of parts contemplated by thisfinven- 'tion-j are :disclosed-ink the accompanying l, drawing, formingpart khereof Aandvvherein a preferred embodimentlof the invention is y h f i the cross bar 3 of yoke 2 to limit the inward shown for purposes of illustration.t
In the drawing similar referencecharac ters refer to corresponding partsin the several views,` of Whichff Fig. lis a perspective; viewof theimold embodying this invention with the plunger n vlocking latch shown released and in `open position, to adapt theA plunger to be used as` vvanejector;
Figi a is a iongauriinai Section wth the j .latch released andthe plunger shown` at its extreme'outward movementfor ejecting the molded product g j and Fig. a is a Side eievaaii Showing; the" plunger in retracted position and the latch j iny locking engagement .to hold itl retracted and to render the handley stationary. l .y l
This inventioncontemplates inthe conj version of a reciprocable plunger-carried rod i @vision e to ",pervforinthe dual function of aplungery operating crevice'or va handle to force thel` mold intothe material to be molded, the pro` 'pirated latch` i toi lockfthe rodI f: The plunger' rod 11 against movement in the inold body orbarrel and which may be quickly released thereby adapting the 11ml iokaccomplisli this dual function. i i f `plungeiyagainst movement and yet maybe `quickly and easilyreleased'with one hand.
In the embodiment illustrated, the mold constituting this' invention comprises a tubular barrell which may beof any desired cross sectional configuration, being here shown cylindrical and` whichihas securedto -iits upper end a bail-likelmember 2, the cross bar Sof which isfapertured to loosely receivea pliiiigeicarried rod ll, the plunger l0 being loosely mounted tosli-de within the f barrel. f This barrelr 1 which is *open at both ends is preferably provided on its `outer faceV intermediate said ends with an angular bead t forming `hand grips to facilitate holding ation ofy theV device.
lof thebarrel against slippage during oper-r stop 12 adapted ltoengage the lower face or or upward movement of the plunger 10 as i provided with a is shown clearly in Fig.y3. 'This rod 11 is v `,also equipped at its upper end with a hand gripl to facilitate the .manipulation of the tmold-and ltheplunger within the mold.
A latch or triggerk 15 is pivotally mounted kat` one endv on the rod 1l at a point adjacent fthefhandlel thereofandras shown is composed of two `metal strips or bars 16 and 17 which straddle the rod 1l andy ispivoted thereto as shown at18,y The yfree `ends of these/strips 16 and r17V are connected by a y IU-shapedcliplQ which extends over *said ends] and is riveted thereto andperforms engage. the crossbar Soi the yoke Qwhen thelatch is in closed position as shown clearthese parteA j the function of ak connector and a spacer for f the strips andalso as a stop or abutment to) oted ends ot the latch so as to enable then'i to be readily engaged by the thumb of the user to force the latch outwardly to release it from its engagement with the yoke meinber 2 as is shown in Fig. 1.
In the use of the invention, the trigger or latch 15 is swung inwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the plunger is locked at its eXtreme'inward limit, it being held. against outward movement by the stop 12 engaging the yoke member 3 and against inward movement by engagement of said yoke member by the stop 19 on the latch 15. Then the parts are so positioned, the lower or open end of the mold 1 is forced down into the body of the material to be molded or measured and this is accomplished by grasping the handle 13 of the plunger rod which facilitates manipulation of the mold, the parts all being locked rigidly, relatively to each other. After the mold has been iilled, a partial rotation is imparted thereto to sever the material within the barrel 1 from the body of the material and the device is lifted out and the material contained within the barrel is ejected by releasing the latch 15 which may be accomplished by pushing outward against one of the lugs 2O or 21. When this latch has been so released, the plunger rod is moved inwardly causing the plunger 10 to force the molded material out of the barrel 1 as shown in Fig. 2, delivering the molded material in a convenient form for wrapping or other packing.
By so positioning the release lugs and 21 on the latch 15 as to permit the outward swinging of the latch by the thumb of the hand of the user which grasps the handle, the other hand is left free to hold the barrel of the mold when adjusting the plunger therein or discharging the contents therefrom, the bead 4t preventing the'barrel from slipping through the hand of the user `during the ejection of the molded material.
It will thus be seen that this latch or trigger constructed and mounted as herein shown and described is very simple and` when in closed position, the plunger rod is converted into a handle for pushing the mold down into the ice cream or other 1mat-erial andwhen the device is withdrawn, the latch `may be released by pushing on either of the lugs 20 or 21 which causes the latch to swing outward into the position shown in Fig. 1 and permits the plunger to operate loosely in the barrel so that by pushing inward it will `eject the molded material and the plunger may then be again raised and set by the closing ot' the latch 15 ready for the next operation.
With the mold o1` gun equipped with this improved latch, an operator who understands the proper manipulation of the latch may mold and discharge from four or' five hundred forms vper hour. which is about double of that which can be molded without` the use oi' this latch.
This plunger may be also used to cleanse the inside of' the barrel by reciprocating it rapidly in a cleansing fluidsuch as hot soapy water or the like.
