Application med: July :16, 1923. seriai No. 651,905. p '1 r This invention'relates to improvements in carfparts and more particularly to such as are adaptable for use in forming ends, sides, roof or door sheets for metal railway cars.
Car ends or side sheets as heretofore:con- 'structed have been subjected to strain which has caused them to becon o more or less distorted before they finally assume a condition which will constitute their elastic limit, in
which condition they will serveto a greater or less extent to sustain the load which they are intended to carry.
One object of my present invention is to so form a car part or sheet that it shall, in its manufacture, be made to assume the condition which car sheets as heretofore constructed have had to assume after inltialuse 1n service, and thus to provide a car sheet orpart which, at the very beginning of its use in a car shall be capable of sustaining the load without distortion to bring it to the limit of its elastic displacement.
A further object is to so form a sheet having the characteristics above mentioned that the metal of the sheet shallnot be weakened in any way and to shape the sheet in such manner that its load-sustaining property thereof shall be enhanced.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
- In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a face view of a sheet or sheet section embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
v Figure 3 is an end view. v
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an elongated sheet or section showing a slight modification of the construction illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a face view illustrating two sheet sect ons united by welding, and
Figure 6 is a similar VIEW showing sheet sections united by riveting.
In the embodiment of the invention the metal is pressed, either hot or cold, in suit-- able dies so that its central portion may be so bulged as to form inclined faces 12 and The triangular end walls l 5 may be approximatelycoincident with the end edges of the sheet'and their apice's meetthe ends'ofthe'apex 6 formed bytlie two longitudinal inclined walls 1 and 21 The ends of the sheet may be provided with flanges 8, and these flanges'may have suitable I rivetor bolt holes 9.; I'prefeihowever-not to provide thesideedges of the sheet with" flanges and tlie'rivet holes will preferably be I located along or near the side. edges of "the sheet as indicated at 10, Figure 1. The side edges of the inclined walls 1 and 2 will be. made to terminate somewhat inwardly from the side edges of the sheet and the rivet holes may be located between the side edges of the sheets and the side edges of, the walls -1 2. When a car end or side is made in sections, the side edge portionsof the sheets or sections will not be flanged with the possible exception of the upper edge of the upper sheetsection and in some cases it might be desirable to flange the lower edge of the lower section. 7 1 r r In assembling the sheet sections to form a car end or side, the sections will be made to overlap at adjacent edge portions and these overlapping portions of the sheet sections may be secured together by riveting, as indicated at 13, Figure 6, or they may be made lain or without rivet holes and the overlapping edge, portions welded together, asindi;
of a metallic sheet having its central portion embossed to form flat surrounding margins, said embossed-portlon comprlslng opposltely disposed inclined longitudinal walls forming a ridge and triangular inclined end walls having their apices meeting said ridge and their bases merging into said margins.
2. In combi'natiomwith the other elements of a railway car, an end wall therefor made of a metallic sheet'having its central portion embossed to form flat surrounding margins, the margins at the opposite ends being bent to form perpendicular flanges, said embossed portion comprising oppositely d'isposed inclined longitudinalwalls forming a ridge and triangular incline'dend walls hav ingtheir apices meeting said ridge andtheir bases merging into said margins.
3. In combination with the other elements of a railway car, an end wall therefor made of a plurality of metallic sheets each having their. central portion embossed to form flat surrounding margins which .are secured to the margins of the ad acent sheet, said embossed portion comprising oppositely disposed inclined longitudinal, walls forming ridges and triangular inclined end walls having their apices meet ng said'ridge and I [their bases merging into said margins, the distance between the" ridges of adjacent sheets being substantially the same as the width of said embossed portion.
In combination with the other elements of a railway car, an end wall therefor made of a plurality of metallic sheets each having their central portion embossed to form flat surrounding margins which are secured to the margins of the adJaCent sheet, the marginsat the opposite ends being bent to form v perpendicular flanges, said embossed portion comprising oppositely disposed inclined lon In testimony whereof, I have signed this s specification.
