Application filed November 18, 1926. Serial No. 149,238.
My invention relates to transformers and more particularly to, transformers of the shell type in which the core comprises acentral leg surrounded by the windings and a a plurality ofoutside legs joined by suitable core yokes to the central leg to provide return paths for the magnetic flux induced 1n the central or winding leg. The general objectof the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of windings whereby the transformer may have low reactance and the high voltage winding be well ventilated and insulated and easily accessible for the attachment F as the main high voltage leads and tap connections such as the main high voltageleads and ctap connections.
from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is across sectional view of a transformerconstructed in accordance with the invention, line 1-1 ofFigc 2, and Fig. 2 is'a vertical sectional View of one side of the transformer taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; A Like reference'characters indicate similar parts in both views of the drawing.
The transformer which is shown in the drawing to illustrate the invention comprises a magnetic core having a center leg and a plurality of outer leg'sll, four in number in the present instance, the center andouter legs being connected by yokes 12 'to provide return paths for the magnetic flux induced in the center leg. The low and high voltage windings surround the center core leg 10, the low voltage winding being formed in two spaced concentric sections 13 and 14 which may be connected in series and the high voltage winding 15 comprising a stack of disk coils located concentrically between the two sections of the low voltage winding. With this arrangement of the windings, the; high voltage winding is well surrounded by the low voltage winding so that the reactance of the transformer will be'low.
The inner sectian 13 of the low voltage; winding and the high voltage winding are supported radially by the center coreleg 10 and are preferably separated from each other by spacers 16 to provide a ventilating duct. The outer section 14 of the low voltage winding is spaced from the high voltof any desired-connections su'ch' tions all around into the space The invention will be better understood,
the section being taken on the age Winding 15 and is supported radially entirely by the surrounding outer legs 11 of the core, suitable blocks or spacers 17 being "interposed if desired. 7
The individual disk coils of the high voltage winding 15' are spaced and insulated from each other by annular'layers or collars 1 8 of insulatingmaterial, the outer edge portrons of these insulating'collars extending beyond the outer faces of the coils'and into the surrounding space to increase the break down leakage paths between adjacent coils. The absence of any inside radial supports for the outer section 14 of the low voltage wind.- ing permits the insulating collars 18 to extend uniformly and with uninterrupted edge porsurrounding the high voltage winding. This space may also be used to accommodate the main leads and any desired tap connections from the high voltage winding. It will be obvious that modifications of the specific construction which has been described may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 2- transformer including a magnetic core comprising a center leg and a plurality of outer legs surrounding said center leg, a high voltage winding, 7 formed in two sections, the high voltage a low voltage winding Winding being concentrically arranged between said two low voltage winding sections, one of said low voltage winding sections and the high voltage winding surroundingsaid center core leg and being supported radially thereby, the other of said low voltage winding sections surrounding and being spaced from said high voltage winding, said latter portions providing return pathsfor I high voltage wlnding being concentrically I It is hereby certified that error yokes connecting its ends to the ends of said tirely by said outer core portions, said high center leg, a high voltage winding, a low voltage winding comprising a stack of disk voltage winding formed in two sections, the coils, and a plurality of annular insulating collars separating said disk coils and extending beyond the outer surface of said high winding sections, one of said low voltage voltage winding into the space between said voltage high voltage winding and said outer low arranged between sald two low voltage winding sections and the high winding being supported around said center core leg, the other of said low voltage windsections surrounding and being spaced from Said high voltage winding, said latter low voltage winding section being supported envoltage winding section.
