This invention relates to weft detectors for looms and it is the principal object oil the invention to provide a. detector very sensitive in its operation and exerting a minimum of pressure on rthe yarn, the operating part which communicates indica-tion of weit exhaustion to the loom pre'lferably being out of contact with the yarn at all times.
lt has been found that when fine yarns such as rayon are used in automatic looms that a bobbin will run for such a length of timethat the usual form of detector will abrade the weit to such a degree that a mark will be left in the cloth when that part ot' the lilling which has been subjected to the repeated blows of the detector is being incorporated in the fabric. It is an important object of my 'present invention to provide a detector so arranged thatthe part. corresponding to the ordinary weft detector will be kept out of contact with the yarn or wett by means of a gate which normally closes a slot in the shuttle, said gate being movable at the time of substantial exhaustion of wett to give an indicating movement to a loom controller. c
It is a further object or the invention to provide a detector in a shuttle having a very light weft engaging member which controls the position of a gate for an aperture in the shuttle so that when sutiicient wett is present the gate will cover the aperture and be operatively related with respect to a stop7 the stop taking the thrust of the controller, but when insufficient wett is present the member will be raised past a substantially empty bobbin to move the gate away trom vthe stop to permit tree movement thereof whenengaged by the controller, such :tree movement resulting in indication ot weit exhaustion to effect a change in the operation ot' the loom. lith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement oi' parts hereina-i'ter described and set forth inthe claims. In the accompanying drawings wherein I have shown. a convenient embodiment of my invention,

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that I have provided a lay 10 having a boX back 11 and a shuttle S` in which islocated a bobbin B. Said lay is providedfwith' a binder 12 acted on by the usual binder spring (not shown) to check the shuttle as the 'same enters the box and hold the same against `the box back 11. 'A stand 13 secured `to fixed structure suchfas the loomsidel (not shown) is provided with a pair o1 spaced guides 14 through which extends the right hand arm oi a controller 15.V A collar 16 secured to the y controller receives the rear vai-d thrust. of a compression spring 17 the forward end of whichlpushes against one oit the guides 14. Said controller extends to the left asiat 18 in front of a portion 19 of the transferrer arm and then extends rearwardly as at 2() through front and back guides 21 and 22, respectively. y
A block 23 is suitably guided by structure not shown to have a reciprocating movement in a vertical direction, ymovingdownwardly on each detecting beat oi the loom so as to canse a corresponding motion'on kthe part oi an actuatorlever 24 pivoted as at 25 onthe left hand end of the lever v24 ,whilef the right hand end 'of the latterV extends through a vertical slot 27'inthe bearing 22. Saidy bearing is provided 'wit-ha bore 28 extend` CTI ing across the slot 27. When sufiicient weft is present the arm 15 of the controller, which is normally under the actuator lever 24, will be moved forwardly so that the leftl hand portion 20 will be moved from under the actuator lever 24, permitting the latter to move downwardly without interruption. lhen insuiiicient weft is present, however, the member 15 will not be moved forwardly but will be held in rearward position by the spring 17 so that downward motion of the lever 24 is interrupted. The motion ofblocli 23 is therefore communicated to the connector 26 and a corresponding indication of weft exhaustion will be' given to the magazine in a manner similar to that set forth in Patent No. 11,030,748.
In carrying out my improvements I pro'- vid'e the front wall 40 ofthe shuttle S with a. slot 41 occupying substantially the same` position as the corresponding` slots in the, usual self-threading shuttle used in automatic looms and I secure to the inner part of the wall' 40 a bracket 42 extending above and bei low the slot 41 and having on the.` lower por.-
tion thereofa stop tonejue43 which may be located intermediate tie ends thereof as indicated inY Fig. 3. Each side of the bracket has stamped therefrom a tongue 44 terminatingin a stop or guide 45.
A pin 46 extendsy across the upper part of the slot 41 and has the ends thereof heldin the bracket 42. A closure or gate() formed of a piece of Hat stock has ears 51, bent therefrom to provide bearings by means of which theI gate or closure isj pivotfalty7 mounted on' ay small rod 52 extendingl between opposite sides of the detector 47'. A coil spring 53 surrounds the rod 52 and has 'one end extending downwardly against the` lower body portieri of the gate 59 and has the. other end extended as at 54 in contact with rthe detector 47. The effect of said torsion spring is toy exert a pressure. on the detectory tending to move the same from the position indicated in Fig. 6 to that vshown in Fig. 7.. i
Under normal conditions when there is a .sufficient supply of weft inthe shuttle as indicated in Figs. 4 and G the gate 50 will be held in front of the stop tongue 43 because of the fact that the yarn on the bobbin engages the` bristles49f to hold the detector `47 in Vdown position lagainst the action of spring 53. The jguides.4prevent motiouof the gat-e 50 to the.y right under action of said torsion spring.
On. each detecting` beat-ef the loom the lay will tendto move forwardly and the closure 50 will engage the arm 15 of the controller and move'the same yieldingly forward against the action of spring 17 the thrust of spring 17 pushing the gate against the stop tongue 43without exerting an apsreciable .increase in the kpressure of the bristles against the yarn. As weaving continues the dia-meter of the weft on the bobbin becomes smaller and the angular position of the detector 47 changes, assuming more nearly a horizontal position. When the diameter of the weft has reached a predetermined minimum amount the `bristles 4S) will move upwardly to the position indicated in Figs. 5 and 7, the length of the bristles determining tie amount of weft to remain on the bobbin at the time of indication.
T he upward movement of the bristles and detector 47 will move the gate 50 to a raised position above the stop tongue 43 by reason of the fact that the connection of said closure with the detector is eccentric with respect to the axis of said detector. On the next detecting beat of the loom, tl'rcrefore, the controller will engage the gate 50 but as the latter is not braced by the stop 43 the controller will move the gate inwardly toward'r the bobbin away from the guides 45 and against the action of spring 53 to Some such a position as is indicated in Fig. 7 The controller end 20 therefore remains under the actuator lever 24 and an indication of weft exhaustion is given to the loom to effect a changein the operation thereof as previously described. n
On transferring beats of the loom the p0rtion 19 of the transferrer arm will be moved forwardly away from the bobbin, the effect of which will be to remove the end 15 of the controller to the right of the position shown in Fig. 7 thus permitting spring to move the gate 50 to the forward position against the stops 45 as indicated in. Fig. The under surface of the incoming full bobbin will engage the bristles 4%) and move the same downwardly to the position indicated in F ig. 4, this downward movement carrying the lower end ofthe closin'etl in front of the stop tongue 43 so that the device is effectively reset7 being placed in resetting position.. by the spring It is to be understood that the yarn is so wound on the bobbin as to move downwardly von that side of the bobbin adjacent the bris les.
From the foregoing it will be seen that l' have provided a. very simple device for l-:eeping-the relatively heavy controller' 15 out ol contact with the weft of the bobbiinr theonly part of the detector which engages the nlling being the bristles 4S) and their infessure being no greater than that which is exertedby spring 53. Furthermore, should the-yarn balloon `into the spaces between the bristles, it will be able to move out along the inclined surfaces more easilythan would be the case should the bristles be perpendicular rather than oblique relatively to the axis ot' the bobbin'.
l-laving thus desciibed my invention it will be apparent that changes and modilications may be made therein those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope ot the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein, disclosed, but what I claim is:
l. ln a weft detector for a loom having an actuator to eli'ect a change in the operation of the loom and a controller for the actuator normally operatively positioned with respect to said actuator, and a shuttle having an opening therethrough, a closure tor the opening movable relatively to the shuttle, a stop secured to the shuttle and normally positioned to engage a portion of the closure to prevent movement of the closure toward the wett supply in the shuttle, and means dependent upon' the amount ot' wett in the shuttle to contro-l the position ot the closure `relatively to the stop, said controller being rendered inoperative relatively to the actuator by the closure when sutiicient wett for continued Weaving is present and said closure being movable out ot operative relationship with the stop and toward the weft supply when insutlicient wett is present to render the controller operative with respect to the actuator to cause the latter to effect a change in the operation ot the loom.
