Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the bumping-post proper Which'is mounted in a vertical position at the end 'of i a railroad track 1-1 whose terminal ends are bent upwardly and suitably connected to a metal backing vmemberor brace 12 of the $0 usual construction.
On the front face of the post 10 is mounted a metal casing 13, the same being provided with aback-wall 14, a top-.wall 15 and side-walls 16, and is rigidly secured in place upon the post by suitable bolts 17 which pass through the post and suitable ears on the `backing-member 12 where they 'are held by nuts 18 threaded thereon.- This casing 13 is formed with an open bottom side, for .a
' purpose hereinafter set forth, and is provided with flanges 19 at the front end thereof for strengthening the same. It is also formed with a boss or rib 20 on the underv side of its top-wall 15 and which is apertured to receive a strain-bolt 21, the boss Vor rib serving as ka reinforcement for the top wall at this point. Mounted upon the strain-bolt 21 within the casing-13 is a friction block 22 provided with a vertical face at its rear side adapted to frictionally engage an inner vertical face of the rear wall 14, and is also provided with an inclined face 23` at its front side which serves as africtionface and is adapted to 155 be frictionally engagedby an inclined face 24 formed at the rear side of an operating wedgei25 which extends forwardly beyond vthe front mouth ofthe casing' 13 andhas secured to its front face a` suitable striking`` block 26, said striking-block vbeing formed Vwider'than its wedge so that its ends'rlwlill;

In operation, assuming theA parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 2,y when a train engages the striking-block 26 the wedge 25 will be forced backwardlyand consequently the block 22 will be'forced downwardly against the resistance of vthe spring 28'.V During the movement'of the blocks 25 and 22 friction will be had upon the surfaces of;y
the rear-wall, the boss or rib 20 and also between the inclined faces'of the blocks and these frictional resistances together with that of the spring 28willserve to take up the concussion between the train and the post. When the pressure is relieved against the buffer, tlie spring will automatically return the parts to normal position.
