:Thisinvention relatesrto car-bumpersffor railwayfsidings and track ends, .'The object ofrtlieinvention is to 'provide 1 an efficient bumper especially to be associated with a bumping-postvand which simple and compact in design and construction and at the same time strongA and capable of offering a greatresistance in use.
e These and other objects hereinafter set v forth areattained by the means illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, :in which Fig. 1,`isa side elevation of the improved bumping post. 1 Y.
Fig. 2, is a `central longitudinal` vertical section through `the casing and-'showing the movable parts in side elevation,v and.Y
Fig. 3V` isa liorizontalsection on: the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and showing the movable members in plan.
Figures 4 andv 5` are ldetail perspective views of different forms of friction blocks.
Similar reference numerals in all of the figures of the drawings designate like parts.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the bumping-post proper Which'is mounted in a vertical position at the end 'of i a railroad track 1-1 whose terminal ends are bent upwardly and suitably connected to a metal backing vmemberor brace 12 of the $0 usual construction.
On the front face of the post 10 is mounted a metal casing 13, the same being provided with aback-wall 14, a top-.wall 15 and side-walls 16, and is rigidly secured in place upon the post by suitable bolts 17 which pass through the post and suitable ears on the `backing-member 12 where they 'are held by nuts 18 threaded thereon.- This casing 13 is formed with an open bottom side, for .a
' purpose hereinafter set forth, and is provided with flanges 19 at the front end thereof for strengthening the same. It is also formed with a boss or rib 20 on the underv side of its top-wall 15 and which is apertured to receive a strain-bolt 21, the boss Vor rib serving as ka reinforcement for the top wall at this point. A.
Mounted upon the strain-bolt 21 within the casing-13 is a friction block 22 provided with a vertical face at its rear side adapted to frictionally engage an inner vertical face of the rear wall 14, and is also provided with an inclined face 23` at its front side which serves as africtionface and is adapted to 155 be frictionally engagedby an inclined face 24 formed at the rear side of an operating wedgei25 which extends forwardly beyond vthe front mouth ofthe casing' 13 andhas secured to its front face a` suitable striking`` block 26, said striking-block vbeing formed Vwider'than its wedge so that its ends'rlwlill;
project beyond the sides thereof. wedge 25 is also mounted upon the bolt21 and'is providedwith'a slot 27 through whichv the bolt 21 extends', the slot permitting a` limited movement Aof Vthe wedge25 back-V wardly'and forwardly in the casing and on 'Y the bolt.
Friction-block 22 is supported in position withink the: casingv by a bufer-spring 28 ports lthe spring and said disk is iii turn suitably supported by the nutsBO -that arek threaded upon the lower end of the stra-inbolt, the nuts being adapted to be adjusted upon the bolt to regulate the tension lof the spring and thus regulate the amount of yresistance to be 'offered the wedge-shaped centrate the upper pressure near the center which Yis mounted around the vertically posi- .tioned'strain-'bolt and at one 'end engages Athe underside of the block 22, and at itsother end is engaged by a disk' 29fwhich sup-vvaok of the top wall of the casing and closely adjacent to the strain-bolt.
In operation, assuming theA parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 2,y when a train engages the striking-block 26 the wedge 25 will be forced backwardlyand consequently the block 22 will be'forced downwardly against the resistance of vthe spring 28'.V During the movement'of the blocks 25 and 22 friction will be had upon the surfaces of;y
the rear-wall, the boss or rib 20 and also between the inclined faces'of the blocks and these frictional resistances together with that of the spring 28willserve to take up the concussion between the train and the post. When the pressure is relieved against the buffer, tlie spring will automatically return the parts to normal position.
It will be understood that yinstead of using asingle friction block 22, a double block 22 at one end aiidadapted to'be secured to a.
bumping-post, a. strain-bolt passing verti- Y cally through the easing and `supported by the top-wall thereof, a resistance spring mounted around the lower end of `strainbolt, a vertically movable friction-block supported by Said resistance spring and pro vided with a rear face for frictionally en gaging the rear wall ,ot the .caaingand an upwardly and rearwardly inclined 'Front faire, and an operatingdvedge projecting through the open end of thecasing `with its topsurfaee in engagementiwth the top wall *thereof and provided with an inclined rear face in `frictional contact with the inclined face of the vertically movable friction- A ear bumper comprising a casing havin Y open front and bottom sides and adapted toihesecured to a bumping-post, a strain-bolt passing' vertically through the casing and supported by the top Wall thereof, a `desistance 4spring mounted aroundithelowerlend of the strainfbolt, a vertically movable 'friction-block Supported by said resistance Spring and to movethroughSaid open bote tom side of the casing and provided with a reanfacedor frictionally engaging the rear t wall of Ithe easing and `also having an; up-
wardly and rearwardly inclined front face,
and an operating wedge `projecting through the open end of the Casin r with its top surfacein engagernentvwith the top Wall thereof and provided with an inclined rear face in `frietional Contact with the inclined face mounted Within the casin said front Wedge-` block constructed to `frictionally engage said boss and rib to concentrate the `up er'pressure uponthe top wall adjacent tot 1e strainbolt, and also constructed to frietionally engage a face of the rear friction-blocktoV move 1t downwardly under pressure,` and `a resistance s ring mountedu on the strainbolt below t e rear `friction-b ock and in engagement therewith to support the same.` In testimony whereof I aflx my signature. l
