CLEANING DEVICE.
j .Application filed. January 8, 1927. Serial no. 159,942.
This invention relates to a cleaning device and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind especially designed and adopted for use in connection with windshields and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device constructed in a manner whereby moisture, frost, ice and the like forming upon such shield or kindred surface may be readily removed in order to assure a clear vision.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprising "a blade member supported in a mannerto have the knife edge of such member in close contact with the surface -to be cleansed and wherein such blade member has its working marginal portion .formed in a manner to readily yield to com ensate 'for any inequalities or irregularities which may be in;
the surface over which the device traverses.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind of a scraper type and which may be readily and efi'e'ctively applied in. working position with re: spect to a wiper of a conventional type.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our im proved cleaning device whereby certain iin portant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. V
The novel features'of our invention will hereinafter he definitely claimed.
lln order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary .elevational view illustrating a cleaner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention and in applied position;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure l with the associated portions of the. dshield shown in section;
l i are 3 is a sectional view. taken substantially on the e 3-3 of Figure 1;
Fire die a view similar-to Figure ,2 illustrating a W or embodiment of our invention. 1 w a As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the upper heme member of awindshield structure and with which is associated in a well known manner the glass panel 2. Disposed through the member 1' at a desired point thereon is ashaft 3 providedat one end portion with an operating member 4 whereby the shaft 3 may be rotated or rocked as desired.
The opposite end portionof the shaft 3 has fixed thereto an end portion of a resilient or spring memberfi, herein disclosed as disposed on substantially a sigmoidal curvature and which has its opposite-or outer end portion operatively engaged, as at 6, with the back or head 7 of a conventional wiper fora windshield or the like.
Our improved cleaner comprises a channel head 8 which is adapted to receive the wiper 7 or the like and which is provided or otherwise attached a blade 11. Each'of the blades 11 is preferably co-extensive in length with the associated flange 9 and has its outer marginal portion extending be-' yond the outer marginal portion: of the flange 9 so that the cutting edge of the blade will have close contact with a surface of the'panel 2. This blade 11 is preferably thin and possessing a certain degree of yieldability'or fiexibility'and its outer or work- ;ing marginal portion at points spaced lo tudinal'ly thereof is slitted, as at 12, in or or to compensate for such inequalities or in regularities which ma occur in'the surface of thepanel 2 over w ich the blade travels, thus assuring edective cleaning action of the blade. 7
The resiliency of the member 5, or arm as it may be called, exerts sucient pressure upon the device 7 and the applied memher 8' to maintain the diverging blades 11,-
and more especially the cutting edges thereof in close contact with a surface of the panel '2 so that as the blades swing across such panel non turning or rocking ot the shaftfl suc surface of the panel will edectively cleansed of moisture, st or the like which may collect thereon, us assuring a place of clear vision tugh the.
ever, under certain conditions it is desirable described although the member B necessarily does not have to be associated with a wiper or kindred element but has the arm or member 5' directly engaged therewith. This member or arm 5' at one end is provided with a sleeve 15 through which is dissed the shaft 3, said sleeve when it is esired to have the members A and B work in unison is locked to the shaft 3 by a binding screw 16 or otherwise as may be preferred. With the sleeve 15 locked to the shaft 3' upon turning movement of the shaft 3' the cleaning members A and B will have unitary movement across the opposed faces of the anel 2. The use of the two cleaning mem ers is particularly desirable in such localities wherein dense fogs are encountered and which fogs have a tendency to cloud both faces of the panel.
When it is desired to use only the member A, the sleeve 15, upon proper manipulation of the screw 16, is freed from turning movement with the shaft 3' and, if desired, the member B may be supported in a lifted or other desired inoperative position.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cleaning device constructed inaccordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated,
and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limitin selves to the precise arrangement and ormation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim 1. A scraper attachment for a windshield wiper comprising a body directly engageable with the wiper and inter osed between the wiper and the windshie (1, said body having outwardly diverging flanges extending therealon and blades carried by said flanges, said blades bein adapted to have contact with the windshe dl 2. .A scraper attachment for a windshield wiper comprising a body directly engageable with the wiper and having outwardly diverging flanges extending therealong, and blades carried b said flanges, said blades being adapted to ave contact with the windshield, said body being provided with a channel to receive the wiper.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures.
