IMPROVEMENT IN PLANKlNG-SETS FOR SHIP-CARPENTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,88 1, dated June 22, 1875; application filed December 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SLOAN, of Trenton, in the county of Wayne and State. of Michigan, have invented an Improvementin Planking-Sets for Ship-Oarpen ters, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has forits object to furnish a simple device by means of which the planks on the sides of a wooden ship may be set or clamped against the edges of the preceding ones with great force, and without driving (logs into the frames, or boring holes in them for set-bolts.
The invention consists in a curved and serrated dog, which is inserted between the frames, and to the heel of which is pivoted a draw-bar with an offset at the free end to overlap the edge of the plank to be set, which is wedge driven under the offset.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the inner wall of a ships side in process of construction, showing the device inserted between two frames and a plank being wedged home.
In the drawing, A represents a curved iron dog, of the form shown, having on its extremity and convex edge several spiked serrations, a. To its heel a draw-bar, B, is pivoted by a bolt, which bar has an offset, 1), at its free end, to overlap the edge of the plank to be set home. Several short spikes a project from each edge, preferably in line with each other.-
To set a plank, the dog is placed on the inside, between two of the ships frames or ribs D 1). The outer serration, a, is engaged with one rib, and the heel rests against the other, if the frames be placed the usual distance apart; if closer, one of the inner serrations is so engaged; but in all cases the heel should be beyond the point engaged, with the offset overlapping the free edge of the plank, between which and the ofi'set a wedge, G, is driven, bringing the plank against the edge of the last plank in place. The short spikes 0 enter the side of the adjacent frame and prevent the draw-bar from moving away from the plank E. The dog can be reversed on the bar, so as to work either way.
The advantages of this device are, that it avoids the necessity of boring the frames for set-bolts, or the driving of dogs into them, both of which weaken the frames, and save much time and labor in setting the plank.
I am aware of the patent granted to E. H. Parker, July 26, 1870, and numbered 105,719, and do hereby disclaim the same; but What I claim as my invention isl The planking-set herein described, consisting of the dog A having the serrations a, and pivoted to the draw-bar B, which is provided with spikes c and ofiset I) and the wedge 0, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
