Application fried May 15,
'My-invention relates to mechanicalmovements. fori'molding presses; and its `objects are 'to `impart at intervals va fast and slow. motion' tothe platen, to :exert 'great pressure fbetween the matrix and the form after a brief interval tof lesser pressure, to mold more effectively the matrix, to utilize a system Ofchanging leverages, and in general to l Z ages more slowly i operated by auxiliary mechanism. vi Through the first -step the press-head.- carryingtlieplaten is lowered rapidly until the same vrests upon and through the'action of gravity'pressesdown Q upon fthe form, andthrough the secondstep by the use of considerably greater pressure every portion of the type contacting with the .matrix is forced. therein anda 'perfect and complete impression is thereby produced. f'lfhus, my improved matrix molding press employs mechanica-l movements which Vimparta fast andslow motion to the platen.
In `pressing Vthematrix into the form, the` fast motion operates until the weight is sup-` ported .on.i.the.form, at `which time, the slow motion is actuated, thereby'greatly increas-i f ing such pressure through the leverages used byme. v v. n .Attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawing ifi-whichv similar numerals of designation refer to similar parts throughoutthel several views. Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improved apparatus, showing the relative, positions `of l"the','variousparts of thev operating mechanism atithe'time whenthe press-head has beenmaised to its highest extent; 2 is anl endview ofmy, apparatus partly insection, showing the relative positions of the 'various parts Vat the time wheiithe presshead has been lowered toa position whereV itfrestsupon the matrix sheet; Fig' is an end view similar Vto Fig.l 2 showing the relative. positions of--the various parts when further action will complete `the impress the motor.

The lowerl portion of said `pin' 18 is normally in contact with the short army of the lever 16,41 A"To operate my apparatus the` motor 1V is? started and throughfthe movement 0f. cion-f i nectiiigf'. mechanism the nut 7 is caused to y Y travel up or down the screw threads 9,9,"de-
pending upon the directionv of jrotation off When thev press-head 3()l carrying the platen 2OV is at its highest position 'hasr shown'n Fig. 1, the ends Vof the leversv 9resti l upon. the fulcrum 17 and the nut is in thefupv-lv permrost vposition of itstravel; 'The'n'ut-f ilo f through the operation-of the motor and connecting mechanism is then caused to travel downwardly on the screw threads 29, the shaft being lowered at a speed approxi-V `matelyf one half of the speed ofthe nut 7 as the leverage is about two Vto one. The platen descends at the same speed as the shaft 10 until theeplaten rests upon the form placed under it as shown in Fig. 2.
f Thereafter Vfurther downward movement ofthe nut 7 willrotate the shaftlO, causing the kopposite ends of the levers 9 to leavethe fulcrum 17 and to assumethepos'ition shown in F ig. 3. Inthe meantime pressure is'reymoved from the pin 18 and the spring 24acts to move lever 16, yand by means of link 15 thrust member 13 is pushed into the recess 14 of themain frame.` Continued movement of the nut 7 downwardly and further rotation of the shaft 10, acting through the ecv centric portionsll, causes a pressure to be exerted between the thrust member 13 and thev adjacent portion of the main lframe which is communicated tothe platen, causing it to be drawn .gwithconsiderable force downv against the matrix and form resting upon `the Vbed 19; 'Under these conditions, the mechanical action is such that the soL Apress is operated through a lever motion i point W through yoke 22 and straps 21 to theplatenQO. 1
'.It will thus be seen in pressing va matrix .i thepIaten 20 is lowered rapidly until it rests on thejtype form, and that thereafter the motion is very much slower with a correspondingly increasedleverage, permitting a motor o frmoderate size to exert a very heavy pressure. 1 A y lTo raise the platen 20, point P of the levers `9 is raised, rthereby causing the shaft v10 to rotate and simultaneosuly relieving the pres` sure between` the thrustmember 13 andthe adjacent frame at Vthe-'recess 14. The opposite end o-f the lever isdepresscd until it strikes vthe fulcrum 17 pin 1 8 is depressed, thereby operating lever16 and link 15 and moving thrust member 13.0ut of` engagement with the recess14,`as shown in Fig. 2. Furtherupward' movement of the point P results in a faster motion of platen 20 by a change inthe leverage. -17 now becomes the fulcrum of the lever with the distance between 17 and vP, constituting the long arm, and the distance fromfl.7 to W the short arm. The platen is then returned to the position shown in Fi y'. 1' f f VVIn .addition to using the'particular form of press, herein described, for making matrices,-my inventioncould also be used for making molds for electrotypes. So, also, it
could be used for molding plastic material y in sheet form, as by embossing the same. It might also be possible to utilize my improved press where the material for the work isin powdered form, similar tothat used for the bakelite products.
While I have shown a'preferred and particular vapplication of my invention in the apparatus described and set forth herein, I by no means desire to limit myinvention to the precise mechanisms shown, since,1 asis obvious, various changes 'and modifications y might be made therein withoutecdeparting from the spirit or purpose of my invention` Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Let-rters Patent is: Y Y
