VACUUM PUMP AND FORCED-FEED OILING SYSTEM.
Application filed January 11, 1926.
My invention relates to an oiling system for automobiles and more particularly to a pumping mechanism adapted to be driven from the fan belt or other driven part of a motor and operating to draw oil from a low level and discharge it into a higher level, whereby to maintain a continuous oil circulation and thus keep the operating parts more thoroughly lubricated.
Among the principal objects of my inveir tion are; to provide a simple, compact and practical pumping mechanism which can be driven from any suitable driven part of a motor and which will operate to draw oil from a low level and force it out through a circulating system; to provide a mechanism of the character referred to which can be applied to motors already in use with no reconstruction and at a. very nominal expense; and in general, to provide a simple and complete pumping system which can be sold as a complete whole and can be easily attached to a motor and connected for operation.
In order to explain my invention, I have illustrated a practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet oif drawings, which. I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pumping mechanism embodying my invention, with parts broken out and shown in section, to show the inner construction and arrangement of the parts thereof; and
Figure 2 is a similar View of the pumping piston and the eccentric operating sleeve therefor.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the body, 1, is somewhat of near shape, with an inlet, 2, valve seat 3,-and ball valve thereon, designated 4, and a supply pipe, 5, connected thereto, said pipe being iextended from any suitable low level part of a crank case, or other place where oil can be taken from the motor. In the lower or smaller portion of the body, 1, is formed a cylinder, 6, within which fits a piston, 7, said piston also having an inlet, 8, valve seat, 9, ball valve, 10, spring 11., and wrist pin, 12, to which is attached an operating band, 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Through one side of the top portion of the body, 1, is a bushing, 14, through which is an operating shaft, 15, on the inner end of which is eccentrically mounted a sleeve. 16, which is secured by a set screw, 17, and which operates the operating band, 13, and the piston, 7, in

motor, shown in light broken lines. A slotted bar, or arm, 23, is provided for supp0rting said pumping mechanism adjustably on said motor, and it is shown supported on a bolt, 24, which supports the fan bracket, 25, also shown in light broken lines. Said arm, 23, is secured to the side of the body, 1, by
being placed over the bushing, 14, and secured in place by means of a nut, 26, substantially as shown. Thus said device is adjustably supported by said arm, or bar, 23, with the pulley, 18, hearing against the fan belt, designated, 27, and indicated in light broken lines.
As the motor is operated, the pulley, 18, is driven, and through its connections it operates the piston, 7 drawing in oil from the pipe, 5, and as the piston moves downwardly said oil is forced upwardly through said piston and into the upper part of the body, which has a cover, 28, and from which it is forced outwardly through the pipe 21, to the place of discharge. It will be understood, of course, that the connections for withdrawing the oil and for returning it again into some part of the motor can be varied as seems best in each case, and while I have shown one practical embodiment of my invention, for illustrative and descriptive purposes, I do not limit the invention to these details, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
I claim:
A pump of the character shown for circulating oil in a motor and comprising a body of cast form having therein a chamber, the lower portion of which is cylindrical with an integral valve seat and inlet opening at its lower end and its upper portion of enlarged form and open at its upper end, a closure plate secured directly upon the upper end of said body to close the upper end of said chamber, a ball valve resting in the valve seat over the inlet opening at the lower end of said body, a hollow cylindrical one piece piston with integral valve seat in its lower end and adapted to fit and work in the cylindrical portion of said chamber, a ball valvein the valve seat of said piston, a ring of said chamber, an eccentric on said shaft,
Within said ring for operating said piston, a driving pulley on said shaft ,to be driven by the fanbelt of said motor, inlet pipe connected to the inletopening at the lower end of said body, and an outlet pipe connected to the larger part of said. chamber above said piston.
Signed-at Pasadena, Los Angeles County California, this 31st day of December, 1925.
