The mechanism foroperating this sprocket chain to drive the propelling rollers comprisesa detent 18, pivotally mounted as at lower end, to a coil spring 26, the other end of which is connected to the slide, tending to urge the detent into the position' shown in dotted lines, in Fig. 2, against the stop pin 27upon the slide. l/Vhen held in the full line position, shown in Fig. 2, by means of the spring 24, the detent 18 engages the stop pin 28, in the adjacent end wall of the case, holding the extremity Aof Vthev d'letent laway fromthe path of the sprocket chain 14.
A cord 29 is fixed to the upper end of the slide 20 and passes over a pulley 30 being extended to any suitable position where it mayv be accessible to the motorman or conductor.
For the purpose of preventingl the belt from unwinding too rapidly from the lower or unwinding roll5 one or more curved tension springs 31 may engage the same as illus trated in Figs. 1 and 3; and for the purpose of winding the band upon the upper or winding roll 6, as it is propelled upward by the` friction propelling rollers 8 and 8, va helical spring 32 is provided.
This spring may be located within a casing 33 and operatively connected to the shaft 34 of the large sprocket wheel 35, a sprocket chain 35a being located around this wheel and around the smaller sprocket wheel 36 mounted upon the windingl roll 6.
VThis spring 32 is normally held under tension, as will be later described, 'and thus tendsl to'furgerthe sprocket wheel 35 in the direction of the arrow, shown in Fig. 3, thus winding the web or. band upon the winding roll 6 as it is propelled upward by means of the propelling krollers Sand 8.

TheV lower or unwinding roll 5 is preferably detachably vmounted, in its ournal bearings as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This may be accomplished by` providing ya stud 40 in one end plate upon which is journaledl the sprocket wheel 15, normally urged 'outward upon the stud bythe spring 41. A hub 42 shaft of the upper or is provided upon this sprocket wheel vand receivesthe reduced lspindle 43 upon the adjacent end of the unwinding roll 5. A similar stud 44 is carried by theother end plate and the sleeve45 is journaled thereon and provided with a squared aperture46 to receive the squared'shank upon. the other Y end of the roll 5.
