(Oil, gas, artesian and otherdeep wells fre quently get beyond control particularly during the boring or sinking operations and, in the case of burning oil and gas wells, considerable damage results in addition to the loss experienced.
The present invention provides a valve which may be applied to the well casing dur ing the sinking of the well, or which may be lo applied thereto in an emergency as occasion may require,` to admit of the iow being checked or controlled and thereby obviate waste anddainage.
While the'drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment off the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the, means to moet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other.v changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.'

The valve casing com rises similar coinpleinental sections 2 whic are pivotally con-J nected, as indicated et 3i The sections 2 are outwardly hanged alon their meeting edges and are connected by loo ts l passing t roiigh registering openings ormedin the outstandao ing anges. rl`lie valve casing comprises a ipe receiving portion' 5 and a valve receiving portion ll. rl`hese two portions 5 and d are disposed `relatively at a right angle to each other. The" opening formed in the portion 5 below the valve containing portion lisV4 of-a slightly less diameter than the pipe 1 to admit of the latter being firmly gripped between the sections when the latter are clamped after b eing fitted about the well casing. The opening inthe pipe receiving portion' above the valve containing portion 6 is slightly larger than the pipe 1 to admit of ready removal ofthe upper portion of the pipe when severed or cut from the main part ot the pipe 1. This opening is internally threaded, as indicated at 7 to receive the usual wedge nipple whereby to lubricate the well and bring it back to normal condition. I The valve containing portion 6 of the casing receives a plug valve' 8, a reamer 9 a drill point 10, a stein 11 and a nut 12. 'he valve 8, reamer 9 and drill point 10 are fixed upon the stem 11 and move therewith. The nut 12 is fixed in. or to the casing and cooperates with. the threaded portion of the stem v11 to positively advance the latter when the stein is rotated.3 A hand wheel 13 xed to the .outer end of the stem 11; provides-` convenient means for rotating said stem to advance the drill, reamer and valve. A. packing 14e located in. a recess in the outer end of the part 6 maintains a close joint between the stein 11 and the casing.z This packing yis held in place by means of a gland 15 bolted or otherwise secured to the outer end of the part 6i The opening formed in the part 6 of the valve casing is contracted at the end adjacent the pivot 3, as indicated at 16 so as to accommodate the reamer 9 and the drill-point 10. To maintain the sections 12 in aliiiemeiit a rib or ange 18 is termed upon the inner or meeting tace oit one Poil the sections adjacent the opening 'therein and is adapted to enter a corresponding recess formed in the abutting tace oi the eoinpan ion section. rllliis is shown most clearly in Figures 3 and l of the drawings., This also insures a close t between the meeting faces ot the sections.
'lo i'urtlier secure the valve casing to the pipe l .an anchoring device is clamped there on and comprises companion 'sections 12 which are clamped about the pipe l. by means of bolts 2() which pass through openings formed in outstanding ears oi the sections. A lug 21. projecting outwardly oin each of the sections 19Areceives the eye of a stein 22. A hook 23 `projecting outwardly from each of the sections 2 receive the eye of a stem 24. The two stems 22 and24 are connected by means of a nut 25. In this manner the connection between the anchorinfr device and the valve casing may be tigcfhtened or adjusted by turning the nut 25 in a manner readily understood.
When borin a Well, the emergency valve may be secure to a length of pipe or pump casing 1, ask a precautionary measure for immediate use in an emergency. However, the construction is such as to admit of the emergency valve being secured to the projecting portion of the Well pipe or casing when an emergency arises requiring the out- How to be checked or cut oli'. When the valve is in position upon the ipe 1 the drill oint 10, reamer 16, and va ve plug 8 are ocated to one side of the pipe 1 and when it is required to control the well the stem 11 is rotated in a direction to advance the cut-l ting tool and valve. The drill 10 is of a len h to penetrate a side of the pipe 1 and to orm an o ening therein to receive the advancin entiDof the conical reamer or cut-l ter 9. T e base of the conical reamer or cutter 9 is of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the valve plug 8 and to the external diameter of the pipe l, so as to cut through the latter. When the cutter is 'fully advanced it occupies the contracted portion 16 of the opening formed in the lpart 6 of the valve casin At the same time the valve plug 8 exten s across the pfipe 1 and closes the same, thereby cutting o the flow from the well. The upper portion of the pipe 1 se arated by the cutter is' removed and t e usual -Wedge nipple, not shown, is fitted to the threaded portion 7 of the pipe receivin portion 5 of the valve casing to admit o the well being lubricated and brought back into normal condition in a manner well understood.

1. An emergency valve for Well casing, comprising. a` casin having 'intersecting openings, the one a a-ptable to receive the well casing, and a cutter and valve plug in t-hey other opening and means for simultaneously advancing the cutter and valve to sever the well casing and at the same time close the valve.

An emergency valve of the character specified, comprising a valve casing formed with a valve receiving opening and an intersecting well casin receiving opening, the upper portion of theglatter opening being enlarged and internally threaded, a cutter and a valve in the first-mentioned opening, and a stem' carrying the cutter and valve and threaded into the valve casin 5. An emergency valve o? the character speciied, comprising a valve casing in which is formed intersecting o enings, the one adapted to receive the wel casing and the other having an end portion contracted, a cutter and a valve in the last-mentioned opening, said cutter comprising a drill point and a conical reamer, and a stem carrying said cutter and valve and threaded into the valve casing.
6. An emergency valve of the character specified, comprising a valve casing formed with intersecting openings, a cutter and a valve in one of said openings, a nut fixed in the opening of the casing containing the cutter and valve, and a stem carrying the cutter and valve and threaded into the said nut.
7. An emergency valve comprising a valve casing, comprising similar sections, said casing having intersecting openings formed partly in each of the sections, means for clamping the sections about a well casing, a cutter and a valve in one of the openings ofthe valve casing and a stem car ing the cutter and valve and threaded into t e valve lar sections pivoted at one end, means for drawing the sections together and securing tliem in operative position, a cutter and a valve in one of the said openings, said cutoint and conical casing containing the cutter and va ve, and a stem carryin the cutter and valve and threaded into't e said nut.
