UNITED'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. HOUSKEEPE B, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO -WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, INCORIORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ELECTRON-DISCHARGE DEVICE.
Application filed October 27, 1922. Serial No. 597,246.
This invention relates to electron discharge devices and pertains especially to electrode structures wherein the anode is supported from a collar surroundin the stem and supports the other electro es through the medium of insulating blocks.
An object of this invention is the provision of an anode and supporting structure wherein the mechanical connections between thestrips and providing on the'larger strip aplurality of sets of three integral tabs extending from its edges, the central one of said tabs being longer than the others and rolled to form a post. This blank is then bent to form a flattened cylinder of the wider strip with a set of tabs at each bend and the so narrow strip is bent and corrugated to form a collar, the two connecting strips beinv opposite each other. The posts are adapted to pass through insulating blocks resting on the other tabs, said blocks providing means for supporting the other electrodes.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 discloses an electron discharge device having an anode constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the 4 anodeand its suporting collar. Fig. 3 is a section through the anode on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a section through the su porting-structure on line 44 of Fig. 1. 'lhe anode and its supportin structure of a vacuum tube 10 are formed I rom a single blank of metal comprisin a. comparatively wide rectangular strl an a narrow rectangular strip con'nect'e by a pair of'narrow members. The wider strip of metal is bent to form a flattened cylinder 11 and its ends are welded together at 12. The narrow strip is formed into a corrugated collar 13 whic surrounds the stem 14 of the vacuum tubelO, I
its ends being welded together at 15. The
anode 11 is supported from the collar 13 by as the members 16 which are arranged medially of the flat faces of the anode. Strengthening plaits 16 are formed in the anode and its supporting structure and extend longitudinally of each face of the anode along to each member 16 and across the collar 13.
A plurality of tabs, preferably three, extend from t curved portions of the anode at each end thereof. The central tab 17 of each set is longer than either of the other tabs 18 and its upper portion is bent or rolled to form a cylindrical post. The tabs 18 are of equal length and are engaged by a face of a block 19 of insulating material having apertures through which the posts 17 pass. The ends of the posts 17, projecting beyond the blocks 19, are flattened and serve to holdthe blocks against the ends of the tabs 18, the latter serving to properly space the blocks from the ends of the anode. A cathode 20 and a grid 21 are supported between the blocks 19 in cooperative relation to the anode.
The welding operations in. this structure are limited to the joining of the ends of the so strips forming the anode and collar respectively and the shaping of the strips into the collar and cylinder are carried on simultaneously. Furthermore, in attaching the blocks 19 to the anode, the use of gauges is unnecessary. The simplicity of the steps of manufacturing this type of anode materially reduces the labor cost, and since the device is formedfrom a single piece of metal, the
ossibilit-y of the separation of its elements 1s obviated.
The invention claimed is:
1. In an electron discharge device,- an anode comprising a metallic member, post-s pro'ecting from the ends of saidmember, sai posts comprising strips of metal bent into cylindrical form. o
2. In an electron discharge device, an anodecomprising a flattened metallic cylinder, posts projecting from the ends of said cylinder, blocks of insulating material having apertures to receive said osts, and means to determine the space re ation between said blocks and anode.
3. In an electron discharge device, an an ode comprising a flattened metallic cylinder, tabs integral with said cylinder projecting from the ends thereof, certain of said tabs tion between said blocks an being formed into cylindrical posts, and blocks of insulating material having apertures to receive sald osts and contacting with said other tabs w ereb the space rela anode is determined.
4. In an electron dischar e device, an an ode comprising a flattene cylinder, posts pro'ecting from one end of said cylinder, sai posts comprising stri s of metal integral with the cylinder, an bent into cylindrical form, a tab integral with said 0 linder at either side of said posts, and a b ock of insulating material having apertures to re- 15 ceive said posts, the ends of said posts being integral wit WILLIAM G.
