Description
R. P. DUNMIRE CONDUIT BOX Filed Dec. 19, 1925 Patented Nov. 1, 1927.
UNITED OFFICE.
RUSSELL P. DUNMIRE, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA," ASSIGNOR TO ERIE MALLEABLE IRON COMPANY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
. ooim'ur'r BOX.
Application filed December 19, 1925. Serial No. 76,486.
Fig. 2 a sectlon on the line 22 in Fig.1.
Fig. 3 a perspective view of the locking shoulder bending tool.
Fig. 4 a detached vlew of the operating' cam on the bending tool.
1 marks the body of the box, 2 a conduitreceiving extension, the extenslon having a tapered opening 3. A contractible sleeve 4' operates against the walls 3. It has an axial slit 5 and a guard shoulder 6. It is provided with the enamel penetrating ribs 7 adapted to engage an inserted conduit 8'.
Tongues 9 are cast on the walls of the box which is ordinarily a malleable cast-ing. The tongues initially are of such shape as to permit the insertion of the sleeve 1 into the conduit receiving opening. The conduit is inserted in the sleeve and the tongues 9 are bent forward and with the same operation the sleeve is forced into clamping engagement with the conduit.
Convenient means for accomplishing the bending of the tongue is provided by the shoulderv bending tool. This is formed with a block 10 having a central slot 11 in which is aranged an eccentric-12. A handle 13 extends from the eccentric. The eccentric operates on a bolt 14, the cross head 15 eX- tending from the bolt into position to engage the tongues 9. The opposite end of the block has projections 16 which are adapted to engage the base of the opposing tongues. By swinging the'eccentric, the bolt 14 is forced outwardly forcing the tongues into engagement with the rear of the sleeve forcing the sleeve into clamping engagement .1 with the conduit and at the same time seat-. ing the tongues in place against the sleeve as shown at the left of Fig. 1.
Thus the entire assembling of the device is accomplished with a single movementof the tonguebending tool.
this is engaged by a flange Ben the extension.
l/Vhat I claim as new is Q 1. In a conduit box, the combination of a body having a conduit-receiving opening and an inwardly projecting bendable tongue extending from the body back of the opening, and a slitted contractiblesleeve in the opening, the walls of said opening and sleeve having wedging surfaces contracting the sleeve with an endwise movement of the sleeve in the opening, and said tongue having an initial position permitting the inser tion of the sleeve and in the opening and being bendable to permit of the forcing of the tongue into locking engagement with the sleeve in place in the opening.
2. In a conduit box, the combination of a body having aconduit-receiving opening and inwardly projecting bendable tongues extending from opposite sides of the body back of the opening; and a slitted contractible sleeve'in the opening,'the walls of said opening and the sleeve having wedging surfaces contracting the sleeveiwith an end- Wise movement of the'sleeve in the opening, and said tongues having an initial position permitting the insertion of tlie'sleeve in the opening and being bendable to permit of the forcing of the tongues into locking engagement with the sleeve in place in the opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RUSSELL fP. DUNMIRE.
If desired, a gasket 17lmay be arranged at the front of the sleeve 4 and
