BATTERY-REPAiR T051, 1
cells of a battery in an eflicient manner and witha saving of both time, labor,'-and material, the severmg being eifected in such manner as to enable the same connector straps to be used again, if desired, when reconnecting the cells.
Afurther and additional object to provide 'a battery repair toolof new and novel design, capable of being manufactured 'at little cost and readily adapted to fit'in a I: showing the cutters sideways, j Figure 3 is: a perspective View ofthe tool suitable holder, "the said tool having both a-boring and a cuttingac'tion.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
, In the drawing: V Figure 1 is an'end elevation of the tool, showing the cutters edgewise,
v Figure 2 isa simllar'view of the tool,
in inverted position, and v cells showing the manner of severing (the connector strap from the post of one cell.
Inthe drawings, 10 and 11 indicate adjacent cells of a battery which are connected 7 by a strap 12. This-strap, which is generally of lead, is provided-at each end with a cap 13 which engages over one of the terminal ,posts 14 of a cell, the said posts being also of lead and united with the cap by heating,-
welding, or otherwise, Thisprovides an 111-.- tegral connect ng structure between ad acent cells which must-be severed to permlt separation of the cells when the latter are to be 7 I thru the connector strap by boring or drilling a hole thruthe cap and the underlying as the utility of the post-.- This method, however, results in a H great waste of material since a new strap "must be substituted for the severed one and, in addition, the post must be built up again I same is destroyed by the, drilling operation.
However, by employing a cutting tool such as provided by the present invention Application ,fi led June'- 25,
Figure 4 is a plan view of two battery "surface of the evident. p i v It will therefore be seen that cutters 1 8 I 1 completely sever thecap from the post with:
out destroying the connector strap, the-longi- 100 V tudinal cutting edges of the saidcutter serv-' ing to trim the sides of the post whileftheifhorizontal cutters serve to trim and face 01f; 'the top of the post and-"cap, It is. obvious t-hat'the cutting ofia circular slot-inthe cap 1 V providesthe latter with a ring or loop which" is easily engagedor disengaged with the 2 vr l swe this waste/of" ateriaiis at o -insides? but the time required to reconnect the' cells;

The tool comprises essen tially a cutter head 15 which may be circular in form and which is provided with an inw tegral taper shank 16 adapted to be received in the holder of a drilling machine or'a'drill V i brace. Projecting centrally 'fromthe cutter head is an anger or drill bit-17 as shownand cutting edges 20 provided at relatively opposite s1des.- Extending crosswise of the face of the cutter head, on opposite sidesof the center bit and aligning-'witheachother are horizontal cutters 21 which project latere ally beyond the'cutting head on fopposite sides as shown at 22. To provide clearance v for the cuttingedges of the horizontal cutters, the face of the cutters is provided, with slopingcutouts 23. j v r r In practice, the tool is disposed over strap point; 2 1 of the bitrestin'g "on cap 13..- The bit isfof such length that the'point is beyond theouter ends of cutter bars 18,-the latter coming 1n contact with the cap afterthe.
point of the bithas penetrated the' same.
,Hence', the drill when rapidly rotated, will bore a hole 25 centrally thru thecap and the post while cutters 18 will cut a circular path 26 in the cap and around the post as shown to advantage in Figure; As the 5 bit is advanced'into the post the/horizontal;v
cutters 21 will engage the to p'of theicap, cutting the same. away'and, facingloif the post and hence, after severance, thestrap or smoothing of the severed parts I 1' LAWRENCE ANTHONY COSTELLO, or wAsiiI- eTon, msrn'rcror COLUMBIA 80 '12 atone endwith the'center bit 17 coinciding'with the center of a'post 1 1, with the post in a manner that is self 1 facing cutters 21 enables them to be readily 7 otherwise.
united together by heating, welding, or
From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages of the invention will be readily understood and that further detailed description thereof is not required.
'What is claimed is:
1. A battery tool including a cutter head, a centrally projecting boring bit carried byfsaid'head, a cutter bar projecting from the head -in spaced-relation to the boring bit to 'produce a circular cut, and a straight edg ed facing cutter carried by said head and extending from the boring bit to a point outwardly of the cutter bar, whereby'to produce a facing cut over a clrcular area exceeding the diameter of cut of the cutter bar.
2. A battery tool as claimed in claim 1, characterized by the provision of two of said cutter bars and two of said facing cutters, said cutter bars being arranged on opposite sides of the boring bit, and said facing cutters being arranged on said head intermediate the cutter bars. I v I e w In testimony whereof I affix my signature LAWRENCE ANTHONY COSTELLO.
