AUTO TRAFFIC SIGNAL.
Application filed October 7, 1925. Serial No. 61,057.
' The present invention relates to rear lights for motor vehicles and aims to provide a rear lamp construction w stop. right and hich will combine the left signal lamps and usual tail-light in a single cas1ng.-
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a cover having a central cut away portion and enlarged cut away portions the central cut away portion,
at the ends of defining arrow heads, novel means being provided for deflecting light may from lamps positioned being complete arrows.
to illuminate the central por display- With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the invention resides proceeds,
the description in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in he precise embodiment of the invention herein disclolsed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without .departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a lamp casing constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an eleva casing, the cover tli moved.
tional view of the lamp ereof having been re- Figure 3 is a sectionalview taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1. Referring lamp casing provided with latera 'fining arrow heads,
of the casing is more or to the drawing in detail, the 1s box-like in formation and is l offset portions 5 dewhile the upper portion less elongated to provide a relatively long compartment 6.
Arranged within partitioning members 7 which offset portions 5 and outwardly the casing are lateral and 8 respectively are disposed adjacent to the lateral have downwardly and extended portions 9 that engage the sidewall of the casing as clearly shown walls 7 and 8 and are arranged other to'define a central which the deflecting I by Figure 2 of the drawing, to the end that the upper portion of the casing at these points will be protected from the light rays of the lamps positioned within the casing.
Walls 10 and 11 have connection with the lation with each compartment 12 in in spaced re- The walls 7 and 8 are formed without out portions curved to conform to the curvature of an electric lamp, the walls being arranged within the casing in such a way that the electric lamps supported within the cut out portions are arranged in such a way that the light rays projected therefrom, will be divided in a manner as shown by Figure 3 of the drawing,
Thus it will be seen that when the lamp at the left of the casing as shown by Figure 3 is illuminated, the central portion of the cover will be illuminated and the arrow head at the left will be illuminated defining a complete arrow. Should the lamp 1 1 at the right-hand side of the casing in Figure 3 be illuminated, it will be seen that the arrow head at the right side of the casing will be illuminated as well as the central portion of the cover, defining a complete arrow, while the arrow head at the opposite side of the casing remains dark.
The cover is indicated at 17 and is provided with suitable openings to ,receive securing screws that also pass through flanges 17 extending inwardly from the casing. Se cured between the flanges and cover is a support 15 on which the lens 16 is positioned. Thus it will be seen construction, the transparent covering or lens which is supplied with suitable indicating characters indicating stop, danger and right and left, may be readily secured in position.
The bulbs which are casing are controlled ositioned in the independently by seat. Supported at the rear of the body portion is a support for'the lamps and wires connected therewith.
At the rear of the body portion or casing is a supporting plate indicated at 19 which is formed with a central opening through which the wires 20 pass, the lamps illuminating the body portion.
Bolts 21 secure the plate 19 to the'body portion and hold the plate 19 in suitable spaced relation with the body portion.
Ic'laim that due to this which wires lead to bers, the last mentioned A lam; casing including a body portion, a pair 0 parallel spaced artitioning members within the body portion defining a plurality of lamp compartments, end partition- 5 ing-members spaced from the sides of the casing and having connection with the ende of the first mentioned partitioning menipartit-ionin members having cut out portions forme in the 10 lower edges thereof and adapted to accommodate electric lamps, a deflecting member of a width to fit between the parallel partitioning members, said deflecting member being bent outwardly at apoint intermediate its ends to provide lateral inclined deflecting surfaces, and a cover for the casing. In testimony that I claim the fore as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
ELMER C- BEEGHER.
