Description

L. J. LARSEN SHACKLE Filed Sept. 18, 1926 ATTORNEYS Patented Oct; 25,1927.

i The iresent-invention` relates Vto.shackles vparticularly 'fot the kind used in) connection Vwith the,l rigging of ships and. yachts, ,al-
though they'rhave niany othervu'sesil vSuch shackles are, generally characterized.by` a yoke having in' itsendsopenings.V adapted yto receive apin' whichis removable and isf secured in the yoke ink various waysx l The general objectvot the 1 invention is vto provide VVa, new 'and improved@shackle characterized` by thel fac-t that while the Ashackle pin i's-longitudinally movable inA ,thel

' tion, Figure 3 which it normally cooperates, 4. U.
The invention will be readily understood 'from the. following description taken. in connection with the accompanying 'drawing wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the shackle; Figure 2 isa side elevation ofthe `shackle with a portion re-A moved toishow certain features ot construc-v is a fragmentary transverse` view in section on the line 3 3 section 1;
. and Figuret is a perspectiveview vof the shackle pin forming one of the elements of the shackle. The` sameV reference characters represent like parts inthe several views.
Referring to the drawing, the shackle is Vshown as provided with a swivel or ring 1 rotatably 'attached ,to the yoke 2 of theshackle by means of a pin 3 which passes y freely through va hole int-hev yokeand-'is Yend v'with Van opening adapted to receive. av
provided with an enlarged head l. VItwill ybe understood, however,` Athat the ring 1 forms no part of Jche* present invention. The arm 5j of the yoke is provided in its lower shackle pin 7 which` is provided at one end with a 'head 9, the other endof said pin being adapted to yenter an ,opening inthe other arm of the yoke2. As shown'in Fig,- ures 1 Vand 2, this last mentioned arm of the yoke 2 comprises a portion 10 whichis integral with the yoke, and a cover portion 11 Y c '.moveinto therecess 24.y i y. l
From theiforegoing description,it will be v which is secured to the portion by screws 12 or in any other lsuitable manner. As best shackle pin.- 7. andi the' v"arm 5 when'the end of the shackle ,pin 7 shown in Figurel, thecover 11k isiprovided Y Y with an enlarged yport-ion 13 which-serves to enclose theendet thefsha'ckle vpin 7 'which projects into the arin 10..

This bent portion 22 of the' spring 2O is adapted vto enter a recess 24 in the shackle Vpin 7 near the end thereof, and thus yieldably holdthe pin 7 againstrotation. 1t will be notedifrom the" drawing that when the recess 24is in engagement with the portion 22 of the spring 20, the holding` pin 16 is in engagement *with the circumferential groove; 15 near thel end thereof. In or'der'to force back the spring 1s V1nsertredV inthe arm v10, the end vot thepin isV provided with l.a beveled portion 25 which,.v acting as a cam, engagesthe` portion 22 of the spring20. It willibe apparent that the lbeveled surface25 ,oft-he pin` 7, bears such a relation to the grooveY 11 and the recess 24"- `that during longitudinal movement of' thek pin, therspring 2O will be forced back until its bentportion 22cooperates with the cy# gagement with the circumferential groove Ilindrical surtaceotthe pin ;y and that asthe' pin is rotate-d with .the locking pin 16 inen'- apparent that the shackle pin 7 may readily be moved from its inserted and locked Aposition, shown in full lines in Figure l, to its withdrawnposition shown in dash lines in that figure, by grasping the head 9 of the pin with the fingers and rotating it about a quarter turn and then moving it longitudinally. The shackle pin 7 is thus always retained in cooperative relation to the shackle yoke 2, but is capable of being'partially Withdrawn, and is firmly retained in its inserted position against accidental displacement. Y
i Various modifications in the form, proportion, relative size of the parts and'minor detailsof-construction may be made without` departing from the spirit and scope of my 'invention as define-d in the following claims.
Iclaim:
1. A shackle comprising a yoke having arms provided with aligned openings7 a shackle pin movable in said openings, said .shackle pin having therein a groove a porshackle pin, and engaging said recess onlyV when the shackle pin is completely inserted and rotated as far as is permitted by engagement of the locking pin with the end of the circumferential portion of the groove.
2. A shackle comprising a .yoke having arms provided with aligned openings, one of said arms being provided with a cavity which communicates with the opening therein and a. cover portion covering said cavity and the outer end of said opening, a shackle pin movable in the openings in the yoke arms, said shackle pin having therein a groove a portion of which is longitudinal and a portion of which is partially circumferential in said pin, a locking pin in one arm projecting into said groove whereby said shackle pin is retained against complete withdrawal from the yoke and is retained in its inserted position, said shackle pin also having a recess therein and a beveled end, and a spring lolcated in the recess in the other arm of' said yoke and having a portion projecting into the opening therein and adaptedv to be dev pressed by the beveled end of said shackle pin, and engaging the recess in said shackle pin only whenthe latter is completely inserted androtated as far as is permitted by engagement of the locking pin with the end of the circumferential portion of the groove. v In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature to this specification.
y Louis JENSEN Lassen.
