Description

E. J. 'HARKNESS COMBINATION COMB HOLDER Oct. 11 1927.
Filed Dec. 192s INVENTOR Eda Jane Har/sness.

Patented Oct. 11, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINATION COMB HOLDER.
Application filed December 15, 1926. Serial No. 154,888.
My invention relates to combination comb holders and the principal objects of the invention are to provide a comb holder that is adapted to hold a plurality of combs, such as are used for waving the hair, securely in place by means of an elastic member secured at one end to another wave comb and to a hair pin at its other end whereby the comb may be inserted in the hair and the plurality of combs held in place by tension of the elastic member as more fully hereinafter set forth.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement presently specified. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanymg drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the application of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the device in full lines and the combs held thereby in dotted lines; and
Fig. 3 is a view substantially in vertical section showing the manner in which the device is adapted for securing a plurality of combs in the hair.
Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, the numeral 5 indicates the hair of a female, as shown in Fig. 1, with a plurality of water-wave combs 6 inserted therein in spaced relation'for waving the hair as is well understood.
The device proper comprises a wave-comb 7 having an elastic member 8 secured thereto by passing both of its ends through spaced apart holes therein and tying knots, as at 9, or by any other suitable and desirable means- The loop of the elastic member 8 may be passed through spaced holes in the bow of a hair pin 10, as at 11, or same may be secured to said hair pin in any other desired manner.
To secure the combs 6 in place, it being understood that same have been properly inserted for waving the hair, the teeth of the comb 7 are imbedded upwardly in the hair a short distance below the lowermost comb and held with one hand.
The hair pin 10 is then grasped with the other hand by means of which the elastic 8 is stretched until said hair pin is at a point slightly above the uppermost comb 6. Said hair pin is then inserted in the hair immediately back of said uppermost comb and say bear slightly against same for the purpose of additionally securing the device in place.
It is obvious that both parts of the elastic member 8 will bear downwardly against all the wave combs 6 and the elastic tension will serve to hold them securely in place. The device is particularly adapted for holding the water-wave combs or other wave combs in place while the wearer is in a recumbent position. Heretofore it has been customary to wave the hair by means of such combs during the daytime as they become so readily dislodged when the wearer is reclining. By means of my device the hair may be waved during sleeping hours at practically no expense or loss of time,
Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is z- 1. A comb holder comprising a wave comb, an elastic member having its ends secured to said comb in spaced relation, a hair pin, and the loop 'of the elastic member secured to said hair pin.
2 The combination of a plurality of wave combs inserted in the hair, of a comb holder comprising a single wave comb inserted in. the hair below the lowermost of the plurality of wave combs, an elastic member having its ends secured to said single wave comb in spaced relation, a hair pin inserted in the hair immediately above the uppermost one of the plurality of wave combs, and the loop of the elastic member secured to said hair pin whereby both parts of said elastic are arranged to exert tension against the said plurality of combs.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 8th day of December,-A. D. I
ETTA JANE I-IARKNESS.
