OIL REGULATOR.
Application filed December 18, 1925. Serial No. 76,262.
This invention aims to provide novel means for controlling the How of liquid fuel through a burner, and to provide means whereby the necessary instrumentalities to that end may be assembled in compact form.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The device forming the subjectmatter of this application includes a pressure-actuated valve-operator 1. The valve operator need not be described in great detail, because it is shown, in substance, in Patent No. 1,502,426. The valve-operator 1 includes a support 2 on which a lever 3 is fulcrumed. A foot 7 is pivoted to the lever, 3. Spring means 6, cooperating with the lever 3, holds the foot 7 engaged with a diaphragm 5 carried by the support 2, the diaphragm being responsive to pressure to actuate the lever 3 by way of the foot 7 The support 2 carries an adjustable stop t which limits the movement of the lever 3, responsive to the spring 6. A link 8 is mounted pivotally on the free end of the lever 3 and extends downwardly.
The numeral 9 marks a base having a longitudinal bore 10 and a compartment 11 separated by a partition 12, having a small opening 14. A pipe 15 is connected at its ends to the base 9 and to the support 2. The numeral 16 desginates a pipe connected to the base 9 and adapted to receive steam from the line which connects a boiler (not shown) with an engine (not shown). The numeral 17 marks a lateral pipe whereby steam is dclivered into the bore 10 of the base 9 at a point near to the partition 12, the pipe 17 generally being connected to the steam dome of a boiler (not shown).
The numeral 18 denotes a substantially vertical casing secured at 19 tothe base 9, The casing 18 has a longitudinal partition 20 forming a passage 22 and a chamber 28, located side by side. The upturned end 21 of the bore 10 in the base 9. communicates with the passage 22. A pipe 23 is connected at its upper end to the casing 18 and communicates with the passage 22. The pipe 23 extends downwardly with respect tothe casing 18, and then horizontally, the pipe 23 having its end connected to an oil burner 2aof the kind shown in Patent No. 1,527,858 and, more specifically, connected to a nozzle 25 threaded into a coupling 26 having an upstanding nipple 27.' Longitudinal guide ribs 29 project into the chamber 28 from the casing 18, and in the guide ribs 29, a valve 30 is mounted for reciprocation, the valve having a reduced upper end 31 cooperating with a seat 32 forming part of a coupling 33 that is threaded into the upper end of the casing 18. A fuel supply pipe 34 is joined to the coupling 33. A pipe 44 is connected at one end to the casing 18 and communicates with the lower part of the chamber 28. The pipe 44 extends outwardly from the casing 18, as shown in Figure 7, and then extends horizontally, as in Figure 1, the pipe 44: having a depending end which is joined to the nipple 27 of the coupling 26. The fuel delivered through the pipe 3a, passes through the seat 32 when the valve 30 is lowered, the ribs 29 permitting the fuel to fiow downwardly, and outwardly through the pipe 44:, to the burner 24,
The valve 30 is reduced intermediate its ends to form athinned fin 35 provided with a seat 36, wherein rocks the inner end of an arm 37 carried by a shaft 38 journaled in a gland 39 on the casing 18, an arm 40 being secured at 4:1 to the outer end of the shaft 38, and the lower end of the link 8 being pivoted at 42 to the arm 40.
In practical operation, steam pressure, taken from a point between the engine and Ill the boiler, is delivered through the pipe 16 to the compartment 11, and, owing to the fact that the opening 14 in the compartment 12 is comparatively small, the diaphragm 5 ismade subject to the pressure derived from the pipe 16, the pressure being delivered up- .on the diaphragm 5, through the pipe 15.
The diaphragm 5, responding to pressure, operates the lever 3, and, by way of the link 8, motion is transmitted to the arm 40, the shaft 38 being rocked, and the arm 37 on the shaft moving the valve with respect to the seat 82, therebyto control the amount of fuel delivered through the pipe as. hereinbefore explained, the fuel from the pipe 34 passes downwardly in the chamber 28, and from the chamber 28, the oil proceeds through the pipe 44 to the coupling 26 of the burner 24. Steam derived from the dome of the boiler, passes into the bore 10, by way of the pipe 17, and is delivered into the passage 22 of the casing 18, the steam moving out of the passage 22 through the pipe 23, and being delivered through the nozzle 25, into the fuel.
in the event that the steam connection between the boiler and the engine is closed, no steam flowsthrough the pipes 16 and 15, to operate the diaphragm 5, the lever 3, the link 8 and the valve 30: but steam delivered into the bore 10 by way of the pipe 17, will pass through the small opening 14 in the partition 12, and will be delivered upon the diaphragm 5, to' actuate the valve 30, the
steam coming from the-dome of the boiler.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a base, in which thereis a compartment and a bore, means for supplying steam under pressure to the compartment, a separate means for supplying steam under pressure to the bore, a casing supplied with a chamber and with a passage, the casing being mounted on the base, the passage and the bore being in communication, a burner, means for conducting steam from the passage to the burner, means for supplying fuel to the chamber, means for conducting fuel from the chamber to the burner, a pressureactuated operating mechanism mounted on the base, the compartment and the bore being connected by a bleed port which is small enough to prevent the pressure in the bore from having any appreciable effect on the pressure-actuated operating mechanism when a normal pressure exists in the compartment, the bleed port transmitting pressure to the compartment when the first-specified means is closed, a valve in the chamber and controlling the flow of fuel through the chamher, the valve being connected operatively to said pressure-actuated mechanism, and means for conducting steam from the compartment to said mechanism, thereby to 0perate the valve.
