UNITED STATES GEORGE W. BECKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
AUTOMOBILE DOOR.
Application filed May 4,
This invention relates to improvements in automobile doors, and has particular reference to a signalling means therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical means which will permit the driver of a closed automobile to extend his hand through the window ofthe door to signal his intentions, without opening said window.
Another object is the provision of aclosure for the door through which a hand may be projected for signalling purposes and which closure may be locked or sealed to prevent unauthorized persons from extending a hand into the interior of the car for the purpose of illegally opening the door from the inside of the car.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view taken from the inside of the car showing thev closure device of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of a locking plate employed in connection with the invention;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1, showing the manner of extending the hand through the closure device; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the locking plate in position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a vehicle door having a window 6 and the usual handle 7 for opening the door from the interior of the car.
In accordance with the invention, the lower portion of the window 6 is cut out in segmental form and the lower edge of the glass thus cut away has attached thereto a supporting frame 8 of arcuate formation and either made of a single piece of material or in two sections welded or otherwise secured thereto. The frame is provided with two channel-like portions 9' and 10, the former of which receives the lower edge. of the window 6.
The lower channel portion 10 of the frame is adapted to receive an arcuate edge of a 1926. Serial No. 106,601.
With the closure of this character it is possible for an unauthorized person to reach into the car and operate the handle 7 to open the door in the event that the latter is unlocked. In order to obviate this possibility the invention further includes a locking plate 13 of substantially the same shape as the closure 12 and provided adjacent the ends of its lower edge with notches 14: adapted to receive pins 15 projecting from the inner surface of the frame 8 at the ends thereof to support said locking plate in operative position. The upper or arcuate edge of the locking plate 13 carries at an intermediate point a screw 16 which is adapted to engage in a screw threaded opening 17 formed in the adjacent face of the lower portion 10 of the frame 8. When the screw is thus engaged with the frame the plate 13 is locked in position on the interior .of the closure 11 and when in this position said plate will. prevent the insertion of a hand through the closure from the exterior of the car.
What is claimed is:
An automobile door having an opening therein, a frame secured along one edge of said opening and having projecting pins and a threaded recess therein, an elastic closure for said opening having one edge secured in said frame, a locking plate for said closure engageable with said pins, and a screw member carried by said plate and engageable with the threaded recess in said frame to lock said plate in operative position.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
GEORGE W. BECKER.
